Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 13-19 | Handsome fighters never lose majors

Injustice seems like a lock for EVO. At least more likely than MK in 2013. Feels good to not have to be super stressed about the games list announcement. I am excited for a chance at top 8 in IGAU and at peace with no MK.

MK9 dedicated stream and ballroom last year was awesome. We got our perfect send off. Hold that shit.

lol. even though i was one of the haters I respect this post so much.

So nobody here digs KI? Neither its simplicity nor its great graphics nor its dojo mode nor its pure mindgames nor its great netcode?

Still haven't gotten a chance to try it, I was supposed to but then shit happened. Still intend to though, but all I really want to play is KOF these days.

Nice.

And glad to see you're not feeling too burnt out, Koogy.

I was definitely ready to sell the company about 3 months ago, or take an alternative job offer. But I decided to take 3 weeks off entirely from working, and spent that time reflecting on life and my goals. I came to some interesting conclusions, and I'm back at it 150% this year.

This time, I'm spending the majority of time training new employees and getting the foundation of the business in a much better place than before. I'm actually excited for the first time in years. :3

And as far as Danger Room is concerned, yes. And trust me when I say it will be MUCH crazier this time. ;)

Wut exactly is so good about that series?

Everything.

Basically, the game is the epitome of good accessibility and deep gameplay, IMO. The game has simple controls and nothing too fancy in terms of executions but thanks to the way the combat plays out and the 2v2 nature keeps matches from getting old. If you haven't seen the game before, here's a video of me (Unicorn) and another GAF member, DonkeyShow (Gunner Zaku) in Ranked.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_55prV7iLQk

Shouta and the folks that are regulars in the EXVS thread will do a better job answering, but for me:

  • It's Gundam. Amazing amounts of fan service with so many suits across the series.
  • I love the Virtual On games. For me EXVS is "VO Lite" in that it doesn't have the complicated control scheme or sheer number of moves per character, plus it has an auto centering camera.
  • Those changes make it a more accessible game, but it's still deep, with step canceling, dash canceling, move sets varying by suits, etc. etc.
  • The pace is phenomenal
  • huge arenas but no problems finding your opponent & fighting
  • godlike music (if you like Gundam)

This stuff too.

I think if you could fix the other problems with the game, 30 FPS wouldn't be so terrible, but as it is, it's just another nail in the coffin. Pacing is dreadful (or at least was, I heard they patched the damage values so maybe that helped). Range on light attacks for some characters is so bizarrely small that it quickly became frustrating/silly. I once played a Koichi v Fatty match and wanted to smash the disk by the end of it. Then there was the janky stuff like Josuke being able to do an infinite but do almost no damage.

It's sad but I had more fun watching the CPU tourney Namco ran during the run up to release than I did actually playing the game.

Yeah, I kind of think that Jojos would be a very poor choice for any serious tournament. It's a pretty jank game even with patching, IMO. It's not like SFxt where there's a good game underneath but needs to be polished to come out. The base is just not good at all.

Is Side 7 still the Final Destination of EXVSFB or are there other competitive viable stages in FB?

I think Side 7 is generally the default for player tournaments. But official tournaments use all stages. There were only a few stages that were kind of bad in Vanilla EXVS but not because it was poorly designed but because it yielded some unfair situations for some units. I think the snow stage in the square from, I believe Turn A, was a unfair one for Hildolfr and folks would get caught on the edges too easily. Otherwise, with the mobility present in the game, I think pretty much every stage was viable.

Great to hear it!
And already looking forward to the next Danger Room, the first one was awesome

This is gold, but TT2 is beast man! Additionally, Blazblue is alright. I wouldn't mind paying for streaming as long as Killer Instinct is not shown on the main evo stream.

I don't like anime games all that much. Straight up anime though? 'Nother story dawg.
Wow I did not expect this at all lol.
I swear, I come in here and do nothing more than talk about off topic shit nowadays, but man, The Wonderful 101 is like the best game I've played in the last three years of gaming.
Three years is too large a window for me. That would include Demon's Souls, Nier, Valkyria Chronicles, Skullgirls, Revengeance, etc.

Based Koogy! I really can't wait to see what's in store with BT this year! :D

She knows I love Marvel and my weakness are vortex characters in SF. Turns out its because she can option select it into beef stroganoff for left overs if we get tired of stew.

I saw this mentioned in the DOA5U OT:

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade Ver.1.04 Location Tests Begin Today, Change List Released

I want to say that the changes and tweaks seem good, but seeing as how I only use Pai so that I can scrub it up VF-style, I have no idea what these changes mean for everyone else.
It seems like the new character will be bundled into the patch for consoles once the loketests are over.

Mods, hope this is okay. I'll be posting this in here for the new page to build awareness for our cause and the live event going on this weekend. Also, if I can make a thread on it, please let me know.

Also posted on SRK's front page here.

Pat was a great guy in the NorCal TEKKEN community and was an arcade tech aficionado. I would often have conversations with him about the latest crazy in arcade sticks whenever I saw him at gaming industry events or fighting game tournaments. As such we are running a donation drive to help raise funds for Patrick’s family. The donation drive is going on now and ends at the end of day on Jan. 24, 2014. There will be prize incentives for all that donate as our thanks for supporting this noble cause. Special thanks to NorCal TEKKEN, SoCal TEKKEN, SDTEKKEN, Super Arcade, Mad Catz, Hori, Bandai Namco Games Inc. and everyone else who has supported our efforts so far!

The prize incentives for donating will be held separately. For every donation of $10, the donor’s name will be entered in a prize drawing to win a number of prizes including:

  • Mad Catz’ Capcom Cup ‘Platinum’ Arcade FightStick TE2 for Xbox 360
  • Mad Catz’ EVO 2010 ‘GOLD’ Arcade FightStick TE for PlayStation 3
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ‘Christie Monteiro’ Kotobukiya Bishoujo Statue
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Exclusive Mokujin/Anna Williams Poster
  • … and a lot more (waiting to compile a full list early next week), including prototype arcade sticks, Tekken merchandise, and more!

Bandai Namco's head honcho for all things TEKKEN will also be donating some TEKKEN & Soulcalibur related items to be included in the donation prize incentives. Hori is also seeing what they can do to help.

If you donate $20, your name will be entered twice. If you donate $100, your name will be entered ten times, etc. We will have pics/info on the prize incentives in a few days. The donation drive end date will be end of day on Jan. 24, 2014. The prize drawings will be done on Jan. 31, 2014 after the PayPal donations have cleared.

Additionally the Southern California TEKKEN community will be having a memorial tournament event in honor of Patrick at Super Arcade on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. All proceeds from the tournament entries go towards Patrick’s family.

Got done reading the Viscant analysis and its spot on as usual... not much to add really. I would say that the omission of the Firebrand/Skrull team is startling because its a one touch win team, it needed some mention in there.

The first two teams listed on that list are the two best teams in the game (ChrisG's team and some variant of Zero/Jam Session) and I am pretty sure that was no coincidence. At the game's maximum level... its going to be some Morrigan/Doom/Vergil team playing against a Zero/Dante/Strider team but like Viscant said the current crop of Strider players aren't at that level yet and still fall back on Vergil despite ZDS having better synergy.

I also feel like team Nemo wasn't given enough credit in its dismantling of Missiles teams. Yeah its a worse Zero team overall but against Missiles its better because Nova's mobility on the ground is better and his air/ground throw game is better.

I chose a really unfortunate user name.

LOL

EXVS is import only right?

How DLCed up is it, and is it arcade stick friendly?

I believe the DLC is just cosmetic type stuff (for now). But there's one suit that's a first press bonus DLC, so who knows. Edit: and given the huge number of suits in the game already, I'm okay if they offer more down the line. GIMME BEARGGUY!

I prefer to play on stick, 4 button set up. I love it. (I think that's how the arcade machines are set up.)

The EXVS thread's OP has a lot of great info about the first game, controls (pad and stick), etc., most of which should transfer over to Full Boost.

Gundam DLC comes as cosmetic stuff and suit unlocks which will happen later on. Anything that is coming in the next few months after release is probably on the disc but they have released DLC suits a year after the game came out. You don't need them though it's a bit of a pain for tournys and folks that want to use them.

The controls are based on arcade sticks, so I'd say it's arcade-stick friendly. The most dexterous motions in the game are double-taps and two-button presses.

The DLC in vanilla EXVS consists of a handful of suits that were rolled out just before and after Full Boost's launch - they're all included in Full Boost, so that's why the vanilla version is on its way out.

There's no major paid DLC for Full Boost at the moment, just a bunch of frivolous pilot costumes and navis and some different gauge designs for customization from the arcade version. There is a suit that's included as a first-print bonus; they did something similar with another suit in vanilla EXVS, and it was eventually released for free down the line, but the rights for the suit in FB are snarled, so I don't know if they can do that again.
