Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 13-19 | Handsome fighters never lose majors

So nobody here digs KI? Neither its simplicity nor its great graphics nor its dojo mode nor its pure mindgames nor its great netcode?

I am really digging KI. From a gameplay standpoint, I do earnestly enjoy it. Every character does play very similarly; doing combos with every character is virtually identical, the differences being is that some characters have different ways of starting the combo. It's one thing to start a combo via pokes, but some characters have better options in the air(Sadira), better options from range(Glacius), and some characters can just deal solid damage via resets(Thunder). I like what KI brings to the table.

The combo-breaker system is probably the most polarizing thing about KI. Some folks can appreciate other things about the system, but it's the combo breaker system that is the dealbreaker. To me, combo breakers are what is killing people's "hype" for this game. The back and forth pace that KI's fighting system brings to the table seems to be something that people just...dislike.

I'm probably strongly generalizing by saying this, but currently in the FGC, as it were, the most popular fighting games have a pace that is strongly one-sided in terms of momentum. Comebacks are definitely possible, but a back and forth pace is kind of...rare, if you ask me. Games like DOA and KI don't get love for this reason, I find. Landing a combo breaker in KI resets the playing field into something of a neutral state, and again, that probably kills the "hype" for a lot of people. Counter-breakers do exist, but they seem to be a moot point. People just don't want the type of rock-paper-scissors that KI brings to the table. Oh well?

Whatever. I'll still play it and enjoy it. I haven't played online too often, but I will have to do it more often.

Killer Instinct's biggest problem. It's expensive and few have a good enough reason to own a next gen console. Until a Capcom fighter comes out on one.

However, the greater huge percentage(FGC included) love the hell out of the game if they do have it. Avatar aside, you can't get pissed at KI, just make better choices and have better spacing.

It's also a problem that it's only on one next gen console and the wrong one to boot.

Bells and Whistles don't matter if the core game is uninteresting. Saw it at TFC myself and was completely unimpressed, Add to that it's on an unpopular console and the low opinion many folks had of the KI brand, and it has a really uphill climb. You can't make a community play a game it just doesn't want to- we saw that already with SFxTK.

I'd even say SFxTK hurt KI- folks kinda remember the huge hype train from certain folks in the FGC- and now that same crowd are saying KI is great. The credibility of elites in the FGC when it came to shilling new fighters took a bit of a hit with some folks.
(nevermind that eventually SFxTK turned out to have some good points, the game was crap for a long time)

Also, the game itself might be considered too simple/shallow.

Ya, p4a2 is a game I'm not even interested in. They barely changed anything. Added a bunch of stuff, but didn't fix the bullshit.

When's Love Max?

That said, the Arcsys crowd- given the Kokonoe BS in CP, I suspect they're just going to wait for Xrd at this point. (and yeah I think Kokonoe is hurting more than helping- I'm hearing ST Akuma thrown around about her by more than a few folks)

As for my Evo prediction:
AE, Marvel , KI, BBCP (with Kokonoe banned) , KOF13, Smash, Skullgirls (I think they'll go with 7 games)

KOF13 and SG in this scenario should run on PC since that's the best port.

My issue with KI is how long fights are dragged out. It's very much like SFxT (and other games where fights take entirely too long) where unless you really appreciate what the gameplay offers, it's very hard to get interested in the game. This was always my biggest concern.

The only game that gets away with long fights IMO is KoF XIII, but that's because the team format makes it to where you're not seeing the same characters the entire time (helps that the core gameplay is good).... even that game could benefit from shorter matches.

The breaker system doesn't help any, but I don't think it's that big a deal (outside of looking obnoxious as hell).

Only think i'm playing lately, the netcode is simply amazing

Still rolling through all the characters until Spinal/Fulgore release...hyped to see how they'll play

Any clue to when we'll hear the EVO lineup? I wonder if they be the same as the SCR lineup.

Won't be as varied as the SCR lineup I am pretty sure. SCR has an amazing range of games being represented this year, stuff we haven't seen in awhile.

I'm going to interpret that as sarcasm; I can't see any way that with their current structure, Evo can handle 20 games, even with smaller turnouts for the lesser-played games.

I wonder if SaltyBet or VGCW are still lukewarm enough to have some sort of Thursday feature for EVO.

Not sure if they did one of those already at EVO, last thing I remember is Floe.

On another note, it seems that We will have to wait a bit longer for SG Encore on XBLA:

Mike_Z
Mike_Z Defender of the Night Lab Zero

XBox patch is behind because we need to get junk switched to Marvelous.

This was posted on Skullheart yesterday, so I'm not so sure we will see it released this month :(

I have it, I've played it, I don't enjoy it.
The dojo mode and the netcode truly are great, but I just can't stand the breakers system.
I don't mind fighting games trying to be "simple" (I love playing P4U, for example, and will probably enjoy its sequel even though it seems it still has the same bullshits in it), but this feeling of playing a glorified rock paper scissors game is too strong for me. As with the graphics, the theme, and the all atmosphere of the game, it is not subtle enough for my tastes.
I much prefere games that reward the players for finding an opening, and I find the burst mechanism a more interesting and clever way to deal with long combos.

That being said, KI feels like a "real" fighting game, and my dislikes of it are only coming from personal feelings and preferences. With less than a year to develop it, I really thought it would end up as a total disaster, which is not. I'll stay curious of how it evolves, and will probably try the new characters when they get released.

Wut exactly is so good about that series?

Shouta and the folks that are regulars in the EXVS thread will do a better job answering, but for me:

  • It's Gundam. Amazing amounts of fan service with so many suits across the series.
  • I love the Virtual On games. For me EXVS is "VO Lite" in that it doesn't have the complicated control scheme or sheer number of moves per character, plus it has an auto centering camera.
  • Those changes make it a more accessible game, but it's still deep, with step canceling, dash canceling, move sets varying by suits, etc. etc.
  • The pace is phenomenal
  • huge arenas but no problems finding your opponent & fighting
  • godlike music (if you like Gundam)

Have you played JoJo's ASB? I feel like as a competitive game it's kind of garbage. 30FPS is really disappointing too. :(

I think if you could fix the other problems with the game, 30 FPS wouldn't be so terrible, but as it is, it's just another nail in the coffin. Pacing is dreadful (or at least was, I heard they patched the damage values so maybe that helped). Range on light attacks for some characters is so bizarrely small that it quickly became frustrating/silly. I once played a Koichi v Fatty match and wanted to smash the disk by the end of it. Then there was the janky stuff like Josuke being able to do an infinite but do almost no damage.

It's sad but I had more fun watching the CPU tourney Namco ran during the run up to release than I did actually playing the game.

The game is physically painful for me to watch due to the graphics style. (Particles. Particles Everywhere.) And there's zero chance of me actually buying an XB1.

Interesting. How do I get my mitts on this game?

Comes out in Japan on the 31st. Last time I checked Ami-Ami had the best price/shipping offer for the physical version, and Solaris Japan if you want to buy JP PSN cards to buy digital from the PSN store. Physical plus shipping was slightly cheaper than digital (due to the markup on cards) but it was really close.

Is it cheaper on a Asian non Japanese psn store? I been meaning to get my hand on one of those games for a minute now.

No idea. Someone in the EXVS thread or the FB announce thread probably has looked at that. I'm getting the Premium Sound edition because I'm a sucker and they included songs I must have for my Gundam fighting (Beyond The Time!).

While I really really enjoy Killer Instinct the lead up to it from the top guys is pretty similar to SFxTK, except nobody knew if Double Helix could make a good game or not. Thankfully they did and I think it is vastly superior to vanilla SFxTK. Its certainly a tough road ahead though just because the install base for the XBO is so small compared to the previous gen, will be tough to expect big turnouts for a game on a console that relatively nobody owns.

The vast majority of the people on this forum who play KI seem to stick to the KI threads and probably actively avoid this thread due to the negativity towards the game everytime it gets brought up here.

I haven't played KI to give an honest opinion on it but I can see myself getting bored of it quick because it only has 6 characters. Its the same issue I had with Skullgirls and that game has more variations to picks with the ratio picks.

Based Viscant with a new UMVC3 blog.

Same deal.

But I think the opinions of KI are muted because you have to drop a serious pile of dosh to even get the game. So very few people here even have it.

I'm sure it being guaranteed for EVO will help its popularity though.
