Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 13-19 | Handsome fighters never lose majors

Let's not forget about Duke Nukem Forever in the biggest last gen disappointment category.

Halo 4 is definitely up there, the amount of hate this title generated is unfathomable.

Yeah halo 4 was pretty bad and coming from reach didn't help. People thought it couldn't get any worse than vanilla reach, they were wrong. The multiplayer was atrocious compared to the other halo's and the campaign wasn't very good either. On top of that forge was pretty much the same and theater was even worse. I'm hoping the second try for 343 will be much better but i'm very skeptical. I'm guessing we should be getting some info and pics/footage pretty soon and I'm anxious to see what they've done.

I'm pretty sure in both cases people are just doing it for fun, but one is based entirely on hype and the superficial aspects of a game while the other in an exercise in game design (i.e., armchair game design). I think you may just be attempting to come off as rude as possible though.

Hardcore fandom is created equal. Nerds like us who care about the minutia in game mechanics aren't any better than the dudes who like drawing fanart and waxing philosophically about aesthetic design.

Wow I wake up and see so much drama generated over a comment that was written to be more opportunistic than accurate v_v

Once they stop trying to reach Wii casuals and fix their broken online infrastructure
Wow so difficult!

I think not trying to reach wii casuals was the problem in teh first place

They presented them a quick in, into gaming. But left them high and dry and left with little to nothing later in the generations. But with the insane sells of the NSMBWII and DKR clearly these people buy video games. Nintendo just needs to get these consoles into peoples homes. So that third parties can make games for them and then they can make more profit. Nintendo's advertising game needs to be restructured not its audience. Nintendo has always been about family and everyone wanted to play and that is never going to change. Nintendo just needs to remind people they exist.

Their online is poo doe.

Iwata talk a mean game, but at this point its apparent he aint got no stroke game. No third party want to get in bed with him, and the Wii U is fucked no matter what Smash looks like.
Especially since they are bringing Smash to the 3DS. That seems like a mistake to me if they want the Wii U to recover. That game is a system seller (speaking personally!).

alright quick post now that I'm out of class

The philosophy behind many of Nintendo's questionable decisions, ranging from having shit relations with 3rd parties for ages to localization fuckups to their Nintendo Direct strategy and terrible online infrastructure, their belief that they can't/don't need to compete with MS/Sony, and yes, even to some extent how gimped Brawl was, all stems from one major problem:

They don't think they have to reach out to anyone, because they think people will come to them regardless. Whether by arrogance or delusion I don't know but it doesn't really matter.

Which is why I won't be holding any expectations for Smash until the entire corporate culture over there changes; while alienating competitive players obviously doesn't actually hurt them and they could turn it all around while continuing to not give a fuck about Smash, it's just one (really minor) symptom of the larger problem.

All this, of course, doesn't take into account the fact that competitive play does not even come at the cost to accessibility, making the whole thing kind of pointless.

(and lastly, WHEN'S MAHVEL)

Super frustrating watching the TRB last night. It was all KI for the first half and by the time Marvel got around, it was crazy late. The funny part was that they wait for Maximilian to get on for almost 15 minutes to play KI. Honestly, let KI run later or in the middle with only 17 entrants vs 64 marvel entrants.

"We cannot continue a business without winning,"

Believe, Smash Bros. BELIEVE.

Hmm, I'm not sure how Sakurai is going to feel about that statement.

A game is built with such depth that it brings to a
player's mind memories of defeat. As a game designer, I can't ignore
this possibility. If, in a multiplayer fighting game, only the winner
feels good and the other challengers get no such feeling, then there is
really no joy at all. No matter how people play, I want everyone to be
happy! Is this asking for too much?

Everyone should be a winner, not just you Iwata-san okay?

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
but seriously I thought casuals didn't care about losing, that's what people told me! /s

edit: also rofl at the "no matter how people play, I want everyone to be happy" part

Honestly Marvel has become pretty boring for me lately, franchise fatigue perhaps. It's nice to see them attempt to give a new game some stream time

edit: Just saw the Windjammers relaunch, if this is true then consider me very excited, I loved the hell out of that game in arcades.

How about this weekend? Saturday is good for me.
I'm not sure what my schedule is going to look like for this weekend, but I'll be sure to let you know. I know for sure that I'll have time Sunday afternoon.

Can PS3 users not see PS4 users? I know I can see PS3 users on my PS4.
I don't think so. I can't see ps4 users.

I might just get Smash on 3ds...
>_>
$40 sounds a lot better than $300 + $60 just to play Smash.

Not knowing anything about SMTxFE doesn't help. (We haven't seen anything outside of one teaser with concept art)
I don't want to get The Last Guardian'd on that shit.

c'mon, I don't think anybody expecting that shit to be any good!

I mean, its probably the worst game I've played all generation, but after all this time and horrible mismanagement, you had to expect that, right?

Ya, you're probably right, can't expect much from a game that's been in development for so long by so many different developers. Forget I mentioned it.

And, damn, brace yourselves, Xrd is coming.

YAY, Guilty Gear Xrd will come out next month in arcades! Even before USFIV! Wasn't expecting that, maybe the console version will come out this year too, since it hits the arcades this early

Man they better announce some more characters soon or else the roster will be a bit disappointing. No Johnny, Jam, Bridget, Baiken, Testament, Anji, etc. That's just easy too many cut characters IMO. I know they'll be added eventually, but the wait is gonna suck.

Crossover roster discussion isn't exactly in depth aesthetic design. It's all based on capturing the best possible combination of fleeting release excitement. This is visible when the most exciting element of crossover rosters from a deeper point of view, new play-styles from adapting foreign characters, is often overlooked for "completeness" or various biases.

My reasoning for the ranking is pretty simple: system/combat/etc. discussion (i.e., fighting game discussion) is much better than crossover roster discussion, so naturally the fan fiction material (or more palatable, speculation) that extends from them respectively follows that order. The problem I initially highlighted has a lot of to do with being unable to have a more typical upcoming videogame discussion because its drowned out by the hype machine (which often happens to morph a strong focus on videogame characters into weird erotica in the case of hardcore Nintendo fans). Not to say all roster fantasy is bad, I imagine anyone who likes the crossover element partakes at least a little, but it quickly gets out of hand.

EDIT: Did +R come out on PS3 yet?

I know what you mean.... it was one among many sour points of Tekken 4.

Like SFIV and many games before it, I wouldn't be surprised if quite of few characters go MIA in Xrd until a console release.

Perfect.
Why can't people have fun discussing possibilities and wonder what could happen in a game they love?! Damn, no fun allowed....

I never said no one should discuss their favorite game, I do it all the time when I'm with friends. Turning that discussion into a 100 page or whatever sperglist is another level though.

The subsequent delisting of UMVC made the whole thing even funnier to me.
