Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 19-25 | As Seen On WSHH

I think fighting games would need to be F2P to ever get that big, with continual free character updates and a way to win without having a lot of skill.

But would there be any companies that could afford that and make a good fighting game that everyone wouldn't instantly shit on? That's the challenge

All this talk about EVO being four days. The first three days can be at the regular ol place where pools take place. Sunday, championship day, can be in an actual arena/stadium where more can sit and watch. With enough sponsors and growth it can happen. Being four days also means more games can be added.

I can't stop trying to airdash in SF4, lol. I don't think I can play this anymore.
SF5 better be anime af

well Smash Bros has 1 down, 2 to go Kappa
I mean like in DotA, where no matter how bad you are, you can win by getting carried by others, and you can blame your shortcomings on them too!

I wonder what Namco's aim is for Pokken.

DOA with 2 out of 3!? May very well be our savior!
Creeper factor.

Four days evo would be true "delusions of grandeur" and would greatly be shitting on the people who take off work to go. All in the name of competing with the joneses/"e-sports"

Ppl have been saying this for years now, and aside from sonys recent pledge and the mlg cashout on kof....it is yet to show any signs of being anything but a pipe dream.

more games can be added but the whole point is that the strongest communities/play are showcased....for example: great theres a love max tournament or skullgirls or something but at the cost of a fourth dayis it worth it to run a 30 man tournament?

some of the EVO suggestions..... yikes.

EVO has already gained a ton of growth over the years, though not like MOBAs and such. That being said, fighting games also lack a comparative audience. EVO maxed out at 147k concurrent viewers, League broke 10 million; with some pro streamers breaking 130k solo.

Fighting games don't need to get that big. They are gigantic by comparison to the way things were 8 years ago, and they're having steady growth. No esports explosion is going to happen unless someone decides to step in and float some huge (HUGE) checks.

YUP. Spot on post

RNG makes people feel worse about losing, not better.
But it also lets them deflect their own mistakes and blame the other player getting lucky -- that's a trait traditional fighting games lack. When you take an L in a fighting game, it's ultimately your fault, and I think that gets to a lot of people.

"I'm good at video games! Smash Brothers just sucks because it's designed to give out wins randomly regardless of skill to make Nintenyearolds feel better! Sakuraaaaaaaaai"

It gives something to blame besides themselves.

I don't see the problem of them running an "anime EVO" or "NRS EVO" on Thursday before anyone is paying attention or the real hollywood people fly in.

4 days is alot, maybe. All those days off from work....hehe

Maybe try to have more stations to run more games. A 24 hour byoc room and keep it 3 days.

DotA lets you blame your teammates, though. Thus preserves the feeling of being skillful, playing a well-designed game, and lets you deflect. RNG only gives you two of these, max.

That would just make people quit Smash.

Waiting for that valve developed sequel to an old fighting game that nobody bothered to wrap their copyright mitts on, and then have a big 1 mil tournament for it.

Valve presents: Akatsuki Blitzkampf 2.

Only certain tournaments is seeing steady growth. I said before that I think the FGC has peaked for the most part. In terms of stream viewership, daily numbers are way down from previous years. A chunk of that is due to Marvel not being as popular as it once was. People don't seem to care much about 24/7 lobbies anymore since it's old news and a lot of personalities have real life to tend to. Max gets more viewers than the rest of the FGC combined multiple times over minus Sp00ky streaming NLBC. Aris is the only FGC streamer getting higher numbers than he use to because he streams other games and adds hilarious cracks and jokes to his streams. Sponsors do pay attention to every aspect of the community and every little bit helps decide whether things are worth it for them. PR Rog retiring is a huge loss because he was the biggest FGC streamer for EG and had the right idea to get people not in the knowing to watch his streams.

RNG can also just change the pace of anything and that change can feel great. The problem is when the people in design are only using he exploitative parts of psychology and not getting the hedonic treadmill.

If you want fighting games to grow to something like Mobas and other games. You don't need to overly dumb down a game, you have to make learning fun for more people. You will need a new set of devs doing that, perhaps somebody from the community who is good at teaching collaborating with somebody in the mechanics.
Until then you are assed out. Don't matter if it's cheap or expensive or hard or easy.

I want quite a few things from MOBAs in fighting games but not fucking RNG. Keep that shit in TCGs and MOBAs only... do not let that shit infest other competitive games please.

Dude won 2 games in a competitive set of Hearthstone yesterday where the Sneed's Shredder spawned Kel Thuzad... twice! Shit is ridiculous.

lol

Also rotanibor (?), when do you do vsav tournies on fightcade. Want to join in if possible

Also people can seriously be comparing mobas and fighting games. And do you really want their numbers? I'm sure fighting games would be better with more people so the skill curive is more gradual but I doubt getting Moba numbers would help that.

I don't think you understand just how much this would make me explode with happiness. Akatsuki Blitzkampf is my absolute favorite fighting game.

Hopefully SF5 can bring in some more viewers/casuals. A slight bump would be good.

Topanga always get 4-7k concurrent viewers every week for their two shows.

EVO 2015 is still going to be big. There's new MK and new Smash to look forward to. And people who only stream monster FG events during EVO time will still tune in for Marvel.

EVO will continue to grow. It's more of a convention around a tourney. (Brilliant just simply brilliant.)

I'm sure some other T.oS can adopt some of the convention around a tourney thing but that relies on capital.

RNG amplifies wins and losses. It makes people more embittered by a loss, but also more exhilarated by win. It only works when a game is built around such a mechanic though, so adding it to something like a fighting game would probably only be a nuisance.

I feel that the brutal, direct and abrubt nature of these games will always disadvantage their popularity relative to other multiplayer games. That said, I think F2P, and integrating community and meta features in the game clients would do a lot to raise their popularity (particularly F2P).
