I imagine shaowebb working at Homer Simpson's power plant

The best American players have incredibly hard opponents out of pools before top 32. Strider has a run back with Mago, Smug has Infiltration, PR Rog has Xian, Dieminion has Luffy, Snake has the winner of Fuudo/Poongko. Juicy match ups.

It's not just the players, but the characters they play. Yang is hard for Abel, Rose is hard for Guile, Seth is hard for Gief. Historically Xian owns Rog and Fuudo destroyed Snake last time they played. Not a great way to start as soon as pools end or only a few matches down the line after pools end. I guess they can't hope for someone else to take them out which often happens in a tournament this big.

The news of Iwata's death hit me surprisingly hard. He was one of the reasons Wii and DS were made in the first place, and the company's strategy during early last generation was what sparked my interest in business. It's pretty strange to think it's been ten years.

I'm not one for speeches, but I like how Malstrom put it:

Iwata was not just a passing CEO figure that many companies go through. His statements was a large part of why I began listening closely to the business side of Nintendo.

It was Iwata who said, “The only person who has the right to be selfish is the customer.”

It was Iwata who said, “The programmer does not get to tell the designer what the game cannot do.”

It was Iwata who heralded the revolution. None of us really know what goes on inside Nintendo and its inner workings. But it is clear that Iwata was a big factor behind the DS and Wii. I love Iwata standing before game developers telling them that things need to change. I loved his Heart of the Gamer speech.

Honestly, I’m so shocked by the news that I cannot summon up words to say things. Anything I imagine I could say would seem so inadequate. It’s all such a damn shame.

When I think of Iwata, I think of class. I have read nearly every word Iwata has said to the public for almost a decade. Never did he say anything disparaging of another, never did he sound pessimistic, and never did he crap on anyone. As gamers, Iwata represented the best things we loved about Nintendo. But as a businessman, he represented the best things about business.

Why does it feel that we lost a friend today?

Why, indeed. Such a damn shame. Now someone throw these onions out, please.

I'lll miss you Blaz Blue. For those that missed it...Galileo vs Dogura. Probably one of the longest emotional rides in EVO history.
Even Maximillian puts it up there as the #1 moment last year

Due to this moment last year, I will cheer for Galileo in whatever he appears in period forever.

KOF13, Melee, GG, SF4, VSav. Marvel if it happens to be on.

KOF13: I don't especially root for anyone. I guess I want to see Misterio's reign of terror brought to an end. Realistic favourite: Tokido

Melee: I'm not rooting for anyone. All I want is great matches. Big House 4 shouldn't go down in history as the greatest top32 ever. Realistic favourite: Armada

GG: I want to see an Elphelt win just for the salt factor, but am rooting for Machabou and Karinchu (if he chooses to play Sol). Karinchu's Sol is so pleasantly violent. Machabou's play, though, is simply art. Considered, understated, but explosively brutal when it needs to.

VSav: We all know Haitani will take it. I'm rooting for Rotanibor to win against the Sasquatch menace though >:O

SF4: I'm rooting for Tokido. Sharp, technical play's my jam and Tokido offers it in spades. With that in mind, I want to see Infiltration either focus on a couple characters honed to the level he played during his prime (Chun+Akuma wouldn't be bad at all), or just get brutally destroyed so I don't have to watch him going to waste.

Marvel: RayRay stole my heart with Zero/Doom/Vergil. That said, I want to see Chris G win and Justin deliver ridiculous Akuma comebacks he has no right to make.

I will watch everything except Melee.

Those are some twisted priorities you've got there.

I wish someone would tell the rednecks I work with at the plant this. God I am so sick of hearing about "getting fucked up", "cock", and dealers choice of graphic discussions about ladies. Every 2 fucking seconds...its like a damned high school locker room full of 14 year olds.

*mumble grumble* Works with skanky industrial workers *mumble grumble*

Some people are like that :P Can't be helped, sorry. Had a similar experience at a party recently, one guy just started going off about porn stars and all my drunk brain could do is wonder how that is ever relevant to anything.

*shudders*
Gets back to working on character select graphics.

What I do pays very very well, but nothing comes for free. I'd love to hear some intelligent conversation and see people genuinely interested in technical skills, art, and music again. My career lets me pursue my passion, but who knows how my sanity will hold up to redneck-pocalypse.

Lol!
Don't get me wrong, we all know our jobs and are good at them, but damned if it ain't redneck around here. Some of the stories from these guys are just ridiculous.
I'm trying to work my way into I&C around here so I can get with the computer guys that handle data trending and instrumentation. They're a bit more mature than the wrench turners in Operations. If not that then I guess I can shoot for supervisor stuff in a few years if I continue to work hard...management seems to like me since I tend to be pretty serious and come from a technical background. Means they got an operator who can bridge the gap between the operations, electricians, and results teams since I speak both tech and wrench turner.

Meh, no matter what though my heart belongs to gaming. I come home from whatever I do at the plant and I just game, read gaming, and make stuff for the game I hope me and Q get to play someday. Then I can say I spent years of my life working on something only to get double perfected on opening day on a stream by Q.

Apparently I need to move back to the west coast. I like this idea.

So has anyone got any helpful hints for someone going to EVO for the first time?

I'm not talking about hints for playing in pools matches, more like;
Stuff to do,
Where to eat,
What to take with me,
Where to shop,
What else is going on at EVO,
Etc.

I literally cannot wait for Thursday to arrive so I can start travelling, granted its a long haul from England, but still, hype will pull me through!!

PSA Watson goes round 2 with the city of Azusa on wed.

The meeting was set up to formerly deny Watson a permit (they didn't have the right paperwork), but with all the social media slamming the city, they might have changedntheir minds.

Did anything notable happen in the Curly this weekend? Should I bother going back to watch it or nah?
It's one of the most diverse Marvel tournaments character-wise probably since the game broke out. There were definitely quite a few hype moments. Worth watching IMO.

BTW man, I remember you were asking about PS4 sticks. Kane, one of socal's Tekken players confirmed that there will be MadCatz sticks available for people to use at each T7 station. If you want to use a pad you have to bring your own DS4.

Oh! Good to know! I finished my PS4 stick mod so I'll still take it but I'll let other locals who are attending know. Thanks!

Shaowebb please you should know that Iron Fist is hot garbage. Even Chun Li gets more use than him.

Arthur and MODOK still get competitive use though.

Yes in casuals with Chris G and Angelic IIRC
That does not count man, they were playing random select.

Thats because Modok and Arthur are sleeping giants where as Iron Fist is just comatose.
MODOK has been awake since that Mexican player (Fruitsy?) rocked him in Evo. People realized he has a ton of potential since Ultimate came out - even Floe said he was top tier. Folks just don't like to play a character that looks that ugly.

Paradigm has been using Arthur forever on assist tier; somehow he always gets the gold armor off unpunished, which was the big struggle with the character. Dagger Toss isn't that great when not powered up.

Iron Fist has never been used outside of JWong messing around. He does have some potential, IMO, but not enough to make top 8 anywhere.

The real surprise is how Sentinel is completely absent from the meta these days. He used to be everywhere. Does Knives still run him? I don't even know if Rayray plays these days.

MODOK is a legitimately good character that just has some painful match ups (ie. Wolverine/Vergil). Arthur is a good support and a usable anchor thus gets used (like Akuma but a bit worse). That's at least good enough to be on a team that can make top 8.

Priest was the first MODOK I had seen in a while that was using MODOK solidly. Most other MODOKs try to get in, do fancy stuff and try to get his set play going but Priest was playing pure space control and defense with the character with good fundamentals. So many time outs by him. Flashmetroid actually plays really well with him too.

Iron Fist is just plain bad. He just has a usable assist but you can't play him down the order because he lacks any other supportive tool (no safe DHC). He can't open up people for shit, throw game is wack, no air mobility, no zoning of his own, no real way to get in, normals aren't good enough... the epitome of "high damage isn't everything" in this game.

Absent? KBR and RayRay both play him and get top 8. He's certainly not absent. GCYoshi plays him as well still.

Absent is Wesker. LOL! Last time Wesker was in a solid top 8 was when Scamby was using him with Chris and Nemesis... I guess Unknown as well as he plays both Wesker and Sentinel.

Also heads up for those heading to EVO, gaf member Rotanibor is hosting the Vampire Savior side tourney again this year!

At this pace, it's looking to be the biggest VSav tourney outside of Japan. I'll be playing and so will Haitani and a bunch of other killers (Note: I am not a killer). Also shoutouts to Mad Catz for hosting the finals stream!

Ah, I haven't heard the name "Rayray" posted in a long time. Glad to see he's still played. Forgot about KBR.

Doesn't Unknown still use Wesker? :-P

Re: MODOK. He is vicious when backed by Sentinel Force. Not great in the neutral, but on incoming, there are just so many overheads during the pin. -_-

Agreed on all parts really. My ideal Iron Fist was meant to be more like a mix of Hurricane Polimar and C. Viper. Instead I got someone who is supposed to be high low pressure who can't use his overhead without gimping his combos, who needs generally 2 bars to fully convert anything, who requires jump cancels, and who was built without aerial mobility or projectile options in a game that features massive aerial offense and massive amounts of projectiles.

I'd trade his moveset entirely for just Hurricane Polimar's moveset with a wavedash or plink dash.

Unknown still uses Wesker but he has been having trouble cracking top 8 recently. I have been saying for a while (and by a while like 4 years) that his team is just bad even if individually all of those characters are at least "good". He needs to make at least one substitution among those 3 characters (either Viper or Wesker). Like it's really, really bad that he has to spend a bar + XF just to safely get in Viper. It's sad to say but if he was running Wesker/Doom/Sentinel or Viper/Doom/Sentinel he would be doing a lot better in the long run (fuck Doom).

RayRay is still amazing at the game, you can still expect him to make top 8 at EVO (though he definitely can't make it either).

On Iron Fist: He's basically a good Street Fighter character that Capcom wrongfully thought would be playable in a VS game.

i dont know if i want to wake up at 11am but I do love me some vsav

Hasn't Unknown just been making poor choices in his matches rather than getting his char outplayed? Then again, that's probably like a lot of what Marvel is, fucking up slightly and dying as a result, rather than cleanly outplayed.

Yeah he's been choking it up for sure in some of those matches but there are quite a few situations where he needs to bring in Viper but can't because "lol bad/unsafe DHC".

It's a supremely valuable tool to be able to bring in characters safely in a game like Marvel. Order wise it makes more sense to have Viper start the game and have Wesker either 2nd or last.

nah, he gets his char outplayed alongside poor choices. in the sense that 'wesker has serious issues against the top tier characters and has to rely on hard reads alongside significant outplaying in terms of spacing to do damage to them'. that puts him in bad situations, especially given his team composition

a few other weskers come to mind in terms of being dangerous but none of them are really the type i'd expect to crack into evo top 8. more like top 16 at most.

The touch of death is strong in Marvel.

I can't even count the number of "top" Weskers on one hand that have a chance at even making top 16.

MAYBE RoachKing? MAYBE Green Ace? MAYBE Wentinel? MAYBE Yipes bringing him out as a rare counter pick?

That is sad as fuck. Wesker isn't even a bad or low tier character.

I love my man wesker but he just doesnt belong in this team lol.

Even if Knives doesn't place, it's interesting if some people try and use Sentinel.

Also, I had never heard of Priest before. Where did he come from?

Priest is from SoCal. He played at Super a lot and he's always at UGC. He's gotten a lot better over the past year.
