Fighting Games Weekly | June 29 - Jul 5 | Frauds Among U.S.

I remember watching this live. So, so good. I was like, "wtf is Daigo doing playing this?" I wonder how much Daigo even got into MvC. He seemed to be holding his own pretty decently at that EVO. I think it was the only time he competed in it at EVO. I don't remember seeing him playing it again in the following years.

Pretty funny, though, that it's a game he doesn't even really play and beat cjshowstopper, lol. Like, I feel kinda bad becUse Daigo prolly shouldn't even have been in the competition, anyway. Maybe he wanted to make it easier for Viscant to win (or was Viscant 2012? I always forget).

Tell me if I am wrong, but she just seems like a gorilla character. Nothing interesting in her play.

Look, 5B and j.B are pretty nuts but she's not a gorilla lol she does the whole detached Persona thing Liz is supposed to do, but it actually works.

Also the only similarity between Narukami and Vergil is they both have swords. I don't get the Marvel comparison at all lol the game is closer to traditional fighters by a mile.

Funny thing is that CJ should have won that just by doing super in response to Akuma's super.

Ah yah, I looked at footage and saw that. Why is Liz even in the game? :/

It was meant for the arcades, and I believe it failed even there. It really did fail in American arcades. Nearly every arcade I went to, NG was quickly abandoned and folks continued to play Alpha 2 or 3 (and those weren't the best games either)

Most arcades in my area never even got the game...probably because CPS3 was expensive and a pain to maintain. So, no one abandoned it here. They didn't get a chance.

I think SF3's failure played a role in the death of American arcades, just like SamSho3's failure played a big role in killing SNK in the US.

SF3 had nothing to do with the death of arcades. Better consoles did.

I don't know why people seem to think that SF3 was heralded as the second coming at the time. It really wasn't. I mean it was a big deal because "Capcom finally counted to 3". But, in reality, if you blinked you would have missed it, because it wasn't really promoted anywhere but gaming magazines.

Keep in mind, SF3 wasn't released in the same environment that SF4 was. SF4 was released when there had been no SF games for many years. SF3 was released a couple MONTHS after SF EX1 and X-Men vs SF. Marvel vs SF came out a couple months after SF3. Pocket FIghter came out later the same year. Alpha 3 came out the next year. The list goes on...

It's actually kinda gross when you look at the number of SF games released in that short period of time.

Liz does kind of her own unique thing really. In 2.0 there's only 3 tiers really, S/A/B and Liz is in B. There's an 810+ PSR Liz wandering around somewhere in Japan that was on the 2nd place team at a big(204 total players) 3v3 over the weekend. I watched it and she was actually killing people. The character is playable int that version, she's just really not that sustainable due to Matchups. That's how she was in vanilla too, sustainable until she ran into Narukami or Mitsuru.

As much as I make fun of Liz, she was never "oh my god why do you despair" in vanilla, she just had those MUs. Bace was the best Liz in vanilla and was placing very high in tournaments late in that game's life, even over LK sometimes. They ran into Narukami in winners and loser finals at NEC and ended up in 3rd though. Now in 1.1 she is pretty despair mostly due to how she lost the means to do what Persona characters do, and the top tier shitting all over MUs. 1.1 has a cluster of unviable characters for the same reasons though, it's less of a Liz thing and more of a 1.1 meta theory thing.

As much as I like to make fun of characters and be hyperbolic, I will take the time to say the character exists. People tend to forget why characters end up being not used in favor of "wow this character is just trash". There are very few cases where a character just doesn't work, most of the time it's an otherwise fine character who can't keep up with MUs.

Marge and Liz are different with a similar theme. One of them happens to do displacement and neutral better, while Liz still has a very much different gameplan.

Arcades did okay up until the early 2000's. It was Capcom's bad marketing and lack of a home release that hurt SF3 series.

And SamSho 3's failure wasn't anything compared to the failure of the Neo Geo 64, the Neo Geo Pocket and Pocket Color, AND the theme park that flopped. It wasn't just one game, you should do some research.

Yeah, I remember watching that Liz.

Is 1.1 what Japan plays right now?

What does Liz do better than Margaret, other than unrealistic ToD scenarios?

Japan is playing 2.0 right now. 1.1 is the console version atm.

Liz actually has realistic ToD stuff, and in 2.0 she has some pretty ridiculous set ups into just unmitigated bullshit. In vanilla she was rigged set ups > stupid ToD damage, and in 2.0 she's like that with a tool set that is less rigged but has some more open options.

When you watch Margaret she wins neutral cause jesus almighty that toolset is expansive, then she does some displaced persona stuff that's just a safer way to do most mix up(outside of some bullshit you'll probably see at Evo). Liz plays a much different (and weaker) neutral game, but the set ups and scenarios she creates are much different, and she can create super high reward. I saw Liz set somebody up into fear, then convert into 7k+ from fullscreen. That's a Liz thing.

Do you have a video of that last Liz scenario?

Desire to get an XB1 is rising. Impressions FGW? I really just want to play Forza and Forza Horizon 2.
You want to spend $300 to play a racing simulator?

Personally, the only reason I see to buy an XB1 right now is Scalebound. I would wait to check that out in August. Their E3 was pretty weak.

XB1 is how much now?

I have two 360s and would trade one in if I could get the XB1 for less than 200.

Nothing I really want on the console, though, and buying one would mean buying two more sticks. Because I can't have a console without sticks to play on it. #obsession

I almost spent that much on a fightstick and almost half of that for a flightstick&throttle

I'm with you... FM6 looks wicked

I was hoping for Gran Turismo at E3. The XB1 deal all have games I am not interested in or already have (Halo Collection & AC Unity).

I want FChamp to play these guys in Marvel 3 just to show how futile their skill is vs. him.

I'll be back for more Xrd and VF too.

I keep telling myself I should finally enter a KOFXIII tourney in T.O. but keep getting scared away by potential official tournament juggling act. Last time I tried this at NEC I had to withdraw from KOF because they ran my pools at the same time as +R after tournament standard time factored in. I wish schedules at tournaments were decided further in advance so I could pick my games based on timing, because I've got too much of a "people-pleasing" personslity to let myself hold up tournaments. -_-

Same here. (Not for Forza specifically but other things as well)

I'll play KI with you :p

Sad, but I'm not just getting a PS4 just for SF5 and that's all I'm interested in that's exclusive to PS :(

Better consoles a big reason Arcades died but operating costs becoming far more than the income probably attributed greatly as well. Arcades provided a unique experience especially over the console games of the time but it started costing too much to get the latest games and if you did, you had to pass on the cost to the player. Lots of folks were turned off by the increase in price for games. Bigger costs to get new stuff, causing lower income because your customer base doesn't want to pay that spells disaster for a business.

So yeah, you can definitely argue that the cost of arcade hardware like VF and SF3 helped.

As far as I can tell VF4 cost was fairly low, especially since the platform (NAOMI 2) was a backwards compatible update to NAOMI (which was used for CVS2, MvC2, among others).

VF3 though... I've been lugging a VF3 arcade board around back and forth between home and school, and it has given me big huge Haggar muscles.

I thought the Die entrance was way better and more funny to me than the kbrads. Stunner is still good and iconic though.

The stunner is going to get all the mainstream attention, but I enjoyed Dieminion's entrance a lot more.

It's also amazing to see how CEO has grown from where it started from in 2010 and how it allows these players to showcase themselves like that. I just wish I could have heard the entrance music through the stream.

I wish these other events did a better job at advertising, but this weekend should be interesting for Street Fighter and Marvel.

I think you should be fine since I expect CC to go just like Toryuken. KOF, DOA, VF will most probably take place Sunday while Xrd goes down Saturday. But I'm sure you can still enter KOF at a later date if you want. Russell let me do that previously when I only signed up for Tekken and then a month later asked to be put into DOA & VF. I'm sure Lapchi will let you do the same.

Anyways, will be there for 3D games. See you there Oneida :) I can't make it to NYGX unfortunately. Still haven't gotten my passport back from the federal government for my PR application and it's way too late to apply for a Visa for the US having a Pakistani Passport and all. Won't be there to give Luke his farewell :(

See you there man! Hope I won't be able to do commentary this time - because I'll be stuck playing :D

In my mind, Narukami is similar to Vergil in that he's got a sword, good normals, white hair, and is one of the best characters in the game.

The reason I said Persona feels like marvel is because they both have somewhat of and open sandbox feel to them. There's lots of freedom to create your own style of play I think, as opposed to a game like SF which seems more strict in terms of how you can play your characters. I haven't played a lot of marvel, or persona for that matter, so if you think I am dumb then you are probably correct in that assertion. :D

Too bad for Vergil that Yu is in a better game series. But hey, different genres etc.

Great stuff! I am guessing that Ken is S tier, by the matches that followed?

Yeah, there's only 3 S tiers. Ken, Mitsuru, S Chie. The first two can be played Shadow or not. You can only see a couple matches though so don't just assume he's S tier cause what he's doing, again it's just MUs. General strength (outside of S Chie) is good but doesn't just make a character S tier in this game, you need those MUs. Ken is super stable with the output to match so he stays up there.
