Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 17-23 | Settle it in Smash

damn i think silky got perma banned.... you can only get banned so many times before they pull the trigger.

Why do you think it's a perma? From his Twitter comments it looked like a normal ban.

-----------

8 player smash is truth.

Unless your amiibo wins.

Max was playing and some of the matches were really laggy. Overall it seems better than your average fighting game.

Just saw this.

I really think majors should use standardized, you must use this stick or this pad controls. It's the only way to ensure everyone's on a level playing field. I can understand locals and regionals who can't get MCZ sponsorship not having it, but it should be standardized (maybe allow a choice of standard sticks so teams like RZR can still use sticks, but they have to be fresh sticks)

Costs might be kinda high though- and I'm sure every TO would be wary of Sanford.

I don't see what those two incidents have to do with standardization of equipment, though. It's not as if the players smuggled aimbots in via their keyboard or something.

I guess you can make an argument for using organizer-provided Steam accounts, but wouldn't players want to use their own cosmetics?

I've missed so much shit playing Smash today. Urley™ impressions:

- Game is gorgeous.
- As much as I recognize that it isn't Melee nor does it try to emulate it in any way, I'm having a lot of fun.
- Pit is the new Marth. They buffed this character's range so much and he has some pretty legit setups, tools for strong read plays and followups.
- Marth is strictly for character loyalists at this point.
- Wii U stages >>>>>>>>>>>> 3DS stages
- I'm drowning in content and extra modes
- I still feel like the game's pace is great until you go into the air unless you're playing Greninja (who despite being nerfed is still fucking potent)
- Fighting a competent Little Mac is the litmus test for how long a person learning a game can go on being bodied before they either get it or leave the game for long periods of time.
- Rosalina is bae

Current squad (in order of usage): Pit, Greninja, Marth, Zero Suit Samus, Rosalina

Smash's online is pretty decent so far, my only issue is those errors I keep getting when searching for a match (and even when trying to get into friend matches) on both versions, but I'm like 90% sure that's more of an issue with my internet :|

- Wii U stages >>>>>>>>>>>> 3DS stages

This is so true it's not funny. Before release I never imagined the difference would be so huge. Still, as much as I dislike its boss, I really wish Magicant had been on both versions :/

Btw, as a fellow Pit(s) bro I'm curious about what you do.

Smash is fun and I like Little Mac and Robin, but I just don't think I'll get enough out of the game to justify buying it. I'll probably just sell my Wii U since nothing else is coming out and play P4A until Xrd hits.

That said, 8 player matches are great.

Magical Battle Festa released on Steam- unsure if that counts as a fighter or not- kinda want to wait a day or two to see reviews before jumping in.

Meant to apply this to fighters as well- would avoid the Full Schedule and plink-select mod issues.

Or someone bringing in a modded keyboard as a stick (someone did this a few years back)

this doesn't make any sense. the csgo cheaters were only able to use the hack in online matches. i'm pretty sure you know that tournaments are ran in an offline setting which means there's no way you can cheat using 3rd-party programmes.

and how does standardising sticks/pads eliminate cheating?

Yeah, but the equivalent would be something like bringing a keyboard with a custom layout to a Starcraft tournament or something, not an ingame cheat.

Referring more to a Full Schedule type stick, or Daigo's custom select-plink stick. (which I think gives him an unfair advantage over folks who don't have it)

Then again, in the old days you had player side advantage in arcades due to busted sticks in tournies.

It might be a good idea to drop the word unfair. Advantage, yes.

Wait a minute: so "unfair advantage" is an oxymoron, here? Because I don't see how an advantage external and artificial to the game isn't qualified as an unfair advantage.

it's not unfair because the 'advantage' is not exclusive for a select few players. everyone can go for select button plink or add extra buttons but most decide not to do so.

Rewiring for Back/Select plinking is as simple as opening up the stick and exchanging the placement of two sets of wires. It's hardly some sort of special procedure. Some arcade sticks might already have the Back/Select button on the face of the controller, making the switch unnecessary. You can even plink on an arcade machine using the Start button. It's an advantage, but since it's essentially just moving button placement, as opposed to adding some sort of functionality or duplicating buttons, it's not illegal.

Furthermore that would mean using any controller ever was an unfair advantage, because all common input methods have their strengths and weaknesses.

When i search for usf4 games in psn i always get these people on far away countries with terribad connection, mexico, uk etc etc.

Im in canada.

Maybe i should make a us psn accounr

To be completely honest, I see the inconsistency in control applications in FGs to be a large problem and is a function of (IMO) the outmoded design of FGs in the first place.

In that sense, Brawl is a more competitive fighting game than any version of Street Fighter.

PB&J's story about getting bodied by an 8-year-old girl in Smash 64 on SmashStudios right now is fucking amazing

edit: not PB&J, I have no idea who this guy is but w/e

Yeah, I actually did manage to eventually get some good matches in Super Smash Bros for Wii U in, 1 person felt pretty much like offline, but since there are no proper matchmaking options, I've been getting mostly terrible stuff.
