Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 8-14 | Fining Nemo

I don't see Smash 4 displacing Melee as the "core" competitive game or as the main game at evo, but it will no doubt have some kind of following.

Unless Nintendo goodwill increases exponentially annually and it goes from Lawsuit -> Lazy Reggie video -> Pot Bonus and a bunch of WiiUs for EVO.

I was happy hearing all the good news about Smash 4. But watching a Smash 4 stream right now between two players, I'm not sure if I'm excited. Right now, I feel like I'm in no rush for the game to be out. At the very least, it looks like what Brawl should've been (if they didn't want to go in Melee's direction still).

Also a legit complaint about ST as Akuma is just as busted in that if not more.
At least you needed a code to use him and no one claimed he was balanced or tourney viable.

EDIT: From sirlin himself:
In HD Remix, Akuma is our chance to get a 17th playable character. By taking him down several notches to make him fair for tournament play, we get 17 new matchups in the game. I even put him on the character select screen so you don’t have to do a code to pick him.

I was thinking of Cammy since I do know how to use her in it. Geese, I've never tried in CvS2, but that sounds like fun.

I'm using Iori and Hibiki still for this team, but I can't help but feel I should've just used A groove instead since they're pretty amazing in that...

Go with cammy then and keep hibiki too if you're going A groove, IIRC she did the most damage in A groove. Iori is viable too(a shame he can't RC his command throw tho), just don't expect him to be his SNK self and you'll be ok.

I'd give it a couple of days. Not that the impressions are necessarily wrong, but Nintendo games tend to have a ... strong grace period.

Yeah, it's still early. That's why I'm only at the hopeful status. I need to see the game get put through its paces before I can confidently judge it.

you got 2/3 of buktooths team.

i think A groove hibiki is awesome though and her resets after she activates are pretty scary.

you've probably already seen it but the Tricks of the Trade vid for hibiki has some cool A groove setups/resets.

Those Smash 4 impressions man...

Grabs allowing for followups as well as knock back from them getting retooled? Check
Lower landing lag on aerials overall? Check
A method to play spacing and movement games? Check (shield canceled dashes into options; pivot tilts; foxtrots are still a thing)

I'm a little sad that dash dancing really didn't make the cut, but the above plus some initial investigation of the newer mechanics makes the game sound like it'll have some really interesting things developing for itself right from the jump. I'm all aboard this hype train.

Dash dancing is possible but it's not as good as it was in Melee.

Megaman's Rush Coil seems broke.

Yeah, I heard about this earlier. It sounds like they left a window for it to be done (the initial action of turning the first dash animation around), but it's not as large as it was in Melee so you can only stutter in place.

This game would really be perfect imo with it but it's really strong sounding right now.

Honda headbutting through fireballs is garbage.

Yes, you're right, it was very easily baitable and at the ranges where it could be useful it was also easily punishable or from mid screen it was a very shitty gamble at best. It was truly garbage. That super fix on the other hand... <3
walking with the dpad while charging with the analog was the new hold forward at the end of the super motion while it lasted lol

The smaller dash dancing still seems to work out okay while actually playing at least, the less laggy aerials + RARing being easier to do than Brawl makes me feel like being able to fake out opponents is definitely there.

:O

I really wish if I had a JPN 3DS right about now.

It might have been Alpha 3, but that wouldn't have been feasible, too much work.

What you said about A2 is true for A3 CVS2 and 3S- all those games would have been patched , and for the better.
I'll take the FG industry of today over 10-15 years ago any day of the week.

As for the Sirlin bias- Dictator ended up at around the same place he was in ST due to other buffs to other characters, and Chun Li wasn't nerfed out of the game. Tiers were much more compressed in HDR than ST. People just hated on Sirlin because he turned their sacred cow into hamburger, and he is rather thin-skinned and that turned folks off. This was the first time the Capcom crowd had a real face they could vent at.

What you said about A3 not being able to pass Capcpom's QA could also apply to A2, CVS2, 3S, CVS1.....and they all did get patched with CVS2 being the exception, it probably would have gotten a revision if license didn't expired.

A2 Gold: cc damage nerf, valle cc removed, alpha counter meter cost increase. Overall character nerfs.

A3 Upper: couch cancelled removed, V-ism invul shortened, V-ism damage nerfed, A-ism super damage increased. Overall character nerfs

3S revision B, dreamcast version: Unblockable removed, Chun nerfed

CVS1 Pro: Juggle system changed, ratio system changed, overall character nerfs.

They're out there but no one plays them because they rejected the updates. At least in North America, I see Japan playing A2 gold over A2 and CVS1 pro over CVS1 on Mikado's ustream channel all the time.

Back when SSF4 came out, I was hoping all the top player rejected the game like all the previous street fighter updates especially since it was a console only update......sadly it didn't happen :(

Come on guys stop already with Garou. This game is rinsed like Third Strike. If we need to get a few games out on Steam from SNK, let it be King of Fighters XI. That's a gorgeous game you can't play on many hardwares and it's the third best kof ever made after the UM series. I remember someone telling me that a KOFXI UM was in development years ago but everyone was fired before it was done. :(

CVS2 also got a patch on the Gamecube, was also rejected.

As for KOFXI, that game had two Krausers (Gato and Kula), and was a little too crazy for its own good-it's about as busted as a Marvel game (but some would say it's the good kind of busted)

to me, 3rd best KOF is 95 or XIII, not XI.

The large blast zones are my only major gripe at the moment. Other than that it's looking pretty good I think.

Just stopping by to say that CvS2 is a beautiful, beautiful game and everyone should play it.
Go back to your Ryu mirrors. :V

It's funny, though. I played a lot of CvS2 when I was in school and I thought the game was kind of bad... but nowadays, I miss it. You don't know what you had until it's gone, etc. etc..

i've heard a ton of people saying they want an Alpha 4 but i dno man do you really want what that would entail? do people really want alpha counters back? air blocking? CC's? Isms? guard bar?

(listing all these mechanics made me wonder how much of an influence A2/3 and Vsav had on later anime games)

i like a2 a lot but im not sure i want those mechanics in a modern SF game...
I would be up for most of those mechanics (except A3's guard bar, yikes), but yeah at that point a new Alpha game may as well be an anime fighter. Bring back chains and add airdashes and double jumps, and you may as well have Melty Blood.

More legit complaint is Ryu fake FB.
I'm not going to lie: I really liked the idea of Ryu having a fake fireball (and still do, honestly), but the way it was implemented in HDR was atrocious. The recovery on it was way too short -- it basically gave him some hilariously good whiff cancel pressure from it.

But Garou is a good game!

Best KOF is 97

So...basically Capcom's traditional method of "balancing" - nerfing all the fun stuff into oblivion instead of improving the lower tier characters.

Is Garou on PSN? I need to buy that game. I only played the demo over Live several years ago, but I never bought it because I knew no one would play it. That game looks so incredible, sucks I never knew about it way back when.

But I never really owned Garou :(
Besides, it's not like releasing Garou means no KOF XI. Not to mention that with the coming KOF released we'll have three on Steam. Lets give another series a chance.

I also like Kof xi over motw

Shame the next gen happened before that line of kof completed. Would have loved a dream match game with the tag system of kof xi

Old assets never got the proper send off they deserved.

The best solution for Ryu's fake FB would have been to make it into a normal done by qcf+k.

that would remove the whiff pressure aspects, which mostly came from using it to reduce recovery of sweeps.

98UM had a considerably less busted top tier than any other KOF. The game was more balanced than SF4- only one char I consider unviable (Kasumi, which irks me), Krauser was broken but FE busts him down to where everyone else is. I don't think there's a huge gap between Iori and Billy (who I think are considered the 2nd best and 2nd worst char in that)

So you're saying that would be fantastic, right? =P

I hope this means there's a chance we'll get Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
My man. I must say nostalgia plays a big factor since last time I played it was at the arcades...
to me, 3rd best KOF is 95 or XIII
Yes. I also have a heavy bias towards 95 because I played it A LOT but having played it recently, it does not stand the test of time that well at all, specially the max cancels and the special move "transforming".
Best KOF is 97
NO! Bad balance + infinites? no thanks.

At least no one is mentioning that POS SvC: Chaos!

I find the alpha series kinda boring. You can jump, air gard, do crazy combos, alpha counter and YOU CAN'T DASH. What the hell with these games. I think my favorite is alpha 2 but I am really not that fan of these games.

Also you do know that Garou has been on GGPO for ages ?

As someone who has transitioned who has transitioned to playing mostly on handhelds these days, Smash 3DS makes me really happy. But I can't comment on how good it is from a competitive standpoint, I am so bad at Smash generally.

I cannot wait for the New 3DS, the c-stick position is fantastic.

You importing?

This is me too, I have played a lot of smash but only with the same 3 folks and with no internet influence at all, in our little smash bubble. I use Samus, ffs.

Talking about SNK has reminded me, I would love to see another take at samsho 64 but with today's tech.(lol)

Hah, my smash bubble is my 8, 10 and 12 year old kids. And the 10 year old destroys all of us.
I feel you, when our friend uses Marth or Fox the salt gets to Sanford vs Rico levels fast. We try to counter him with silly stage+items combos(and unspoken all 3 of us against him rules) but in the end it doesn't even matter... :(

MY EYES!!! You know you fucked up when mortal kombat shaolin monks has better combos than your game Kappa
?
