Fighting Games Weekly | September 17-23

Battle system and art I guess based on MB or blazblue or the like. Not in itself a bad thing, but I might be missing the hook based on the gameplay I have scene (which admittedly is mostly people hitting buttons to work it put).

Mind walking me through the games bullet points?

Sure.

The thing that separates this game from others is the Grind Grid or GRD. It's kinda like a tug of war meter thingy; it increases when you're in a good situation and decrease when you're in a bad one.

GRD vorpal is activated after a set amount a time and it rewards who ever has the highest GRD with benefits such as higher attack power. While in this state you can convert all of you GRD into the game's version of super meter and doing so also nets you a roman cancel This action is called chain shift and doing so will cease the GRD vorpal state.

This game also has a short hop which you can do air born and it's called assault. You do this through a button command unlike most games.

I can go in more but these are the obvious differences from most fighting games.

EDIT:oops i forgot the veil off state. It's kinda like SFxT's tag super thing. In this mode you get infinite meter to use EX and supers by consuming 100% of your meter. It also acts like a Burst

Thanks, I think I get it, but might need to wrap my head around the GRD feature a bit more.

Sounds a lot like even more stupid anti-turtling nonsense that anime fighting games are obssessed about.

The Team St1ckbug monthly is happening this week.

They'll be running GGXXAC, BBCSEX, VF5FS, SG, P4A, and Vampire Savior has been added to the lineup as well.
Persona 4 Arena is gonna be a 2 vs 2 format this time.

In other news, while it's still a ways off, DaiAndOh (of TSB) will be holding Guilty Madness at Next Level on November 17.
It's a high stakes Guilty Gear XX Accent Core event, similar to Curleh Mustache.
Min'll be streaming it when it does happen.

wat that makes no sense. Did you read what I typed?

Anyways the only games that has "anti turtling nonsense" in them are arcsys fighters which aren't all anime fighters and you can still pretty much turtle in those game. You're just prevent from doing repeated back dashes and air back dashes. Please know what you're talking about

What's the definition of "good" and "bad" situation? My guess is that it's good when you are attacking and bad when you are blocking, so my apology if I am wrong.

Charmander > Squirtle > Bulbasaur.

Annnnnd Charizard >>> Blastoise >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Magikarp >>>>>>>>> Venusaur.

I'm trying so hard to fight this somehow because Blastoise was my fucking man back in the Red/Blue days, but this is pretty correct.

Bulbasaur was totally just that one Pokemon out of the three you got for completion's sake. In Gen 1, you also got the added bonus of Razor Leaf being XF3 broken with it's critical hit ratios, but then Gen 2 came along and nerfed it into oblivion.

Karst controversial post:
Bayonetta becoming a Wii U exclusive is the best thing to happen for Platinum Games since it was founded.

Thanks for the thread, Enzo!

I can get down with this.

I thought there were supposed to be controversial posts on this page?

aaaaaaaaaaaaanyways, N64 shits on PS1. COME AT ME JAXEL

There are times posting on GAF where I don't want personal bias to outshine objectivity, but this is really one of those I gotta say "hell fucking yes" to. You guys even added the secret best answer by mentioning the PSX only being better about JRPGs over the 64.

Controversial first page post huh...

I still think Dante is top 5 in Ultimate Marvel. I also think Doom is massively overrated.

Being knocked down and comboed. Yes you also gain momentum when you force someone in a block string.

Only one character can double-jump.
One character can fly.
All ground normals are air-unblockable.
Air-dashing/short-hops are in the game, but they cost meter.
A lot less character-specific mechanics than Persona or BB.
Push-blocking.
auto-combos lol
This thing.

You can see some developer-released videos on the same channel Infinite linked. The spacing to me seems really interesting because a lot of characters have options farther away than one or two character widths apart, so I'm hoping the spacing ends up different for most characters instead of just, "I have to be within one character width in their face all the time."

I think Doom is rated. As long as there are TACs he will be useful for a long time yet.

Vergil? I think he has a month left before he becomes the next Wesker.

I'm used to a lot of folks putting him around top 4 - 7 and that's what gets me. I feel like he's a solid #10 though.

If it makes you feel better, the top characters in the SBO pre-release tournament were a charge projectile character, a full-screen limb character (like Dhalsim), and this monster.

Yeah most character's normals are like 2 characters wide which leads to a footsie heavy which is the intent of the designers. They wanted to avoid creating another Melty Blood.

See, after watching that third video, people should realize that Vergil could be worse!

Thought the same thing.

So am I right in only 10 characters or is that a "so far" kind of thing. Game looks pretty fun but I like a larger roster to increase the chance one clicks.

I wish I could enslave you all to make a list of timestamps/links for tournaments I don't have time to watch.

ZANGEEEEF.gif

I don't play melty... how is it different? In terms of footsies I mean.

That's how the designers feel. They said they didn't want to create a "combo" game with air dashes and such instead they wan't a game more on the ground.

To answer you question footsies in melty is different from most fighters because they are played out primarily in the air.

That's also probably why they have stuff like pushblocking and no super-jumps.

I feel like people are always at risk of being jumped on for using the term "footsies" outside of SF.

It might only be 10, and it might increase with expansions. As far as release goes, it's only 10 though.

Yuzuriha's teleports aren't as good as they seem in my opinion. I don't really play Marvel, but Vergil's seem a lot better outside of not being able to feint, because it seems like she has more recovery and she doesn't have assists/spiral swords to cover her teleport. But I don't play Marvel so I don't really know what I'm talking about. :V

Why.

Why is it that for all my nerd rage towards Derpgil, this character with fullscreen wall bounce normals is getting me hype? :lol

I blame maining Marth in Smash Bros.

EDIT: She has a fucking Aku Zoku Zan finisher? Hajime Saito all up in this bitch. I think I want to try this.

Top 5:

Vergil
Zero
Magneto
Doom
Spencer

Morrigan and Viper are overrated, probably #6 and #7 though. Has a Viper player won a UMVC3 tournament yet? Marlin Pie winning The Break with a joke team in grand finals doesn't count.

That character has a TON of potential. She's like Gohan circa Freeza saga right now. One day, she'll be SSJ2 Gohan. But not now.

DIVIDE! kill each other, but it's good "INVERSES"

Top tier Engrish there.

Wait so Viper is overrated with a ton of potential to be the best?

Is that like being a fraud who backs it up and is respected?

Viper is a theory top 3 member (like a "ten more years" certified type character), but doesn't have results enough for people to put her over characters defining the current metagame.

Shadowloo Showdown.... Viper won over Justin, Champ, and Knives, Zak B, Antman, Houshen, Airtola etc...

Funny enough out of the 7 characters you posted I *think* (I'm sure Dahbomb knows the actual answer) Zero has the least amount of top 8 major placing.

Ultimately, how do you kill the randomness of the game and solve all the brain dead, near unblockables setups which you have never seen before? By spamming footdive and missiles assist. How do you increase the randomness of the game and increase the risk of you getting bodied by a dropped combo? By picking a high execution, not so high reward character like Dante.

That game looks godlike, thats all I gotta say. Best 2d visuals by far.

See, after watching that third video, people should realize that Vergil could be worse!
I can already see a ton of flaws in her gameplay, at first glance she looks stupidly good though.

I can't give a top 5 yet but I can give the top 4 for UMVC3 in its later life cycle. (no particular order)

Viper
Zero
Magneto
Dante

In my opinion these characters are all guaranteed.

How can you not like Magus on the mic? I feel like people who dont like him take him too seriously/dont get it. Him and David are a great duo imo.

Magus is the goddamn shit on the mic. My favorite commentator hands down. Dude knows his shit, is genuinely funny, is quick witted, and works really well with every other commentator I've seen him paired with. IMO all the whining is just meaningless noise from squares. I just wish Keystone II was still poppin so I could get my UNCENSORED TOO REAL FOR TV Magus fix.
