Team Norcal

RCMJi.jpg

It's gonna be Champ vs Combofiend to decide which side wins. So basically it's gonna be Norcal. If socal had Justin then it'd be closer.

What about Infrit? He gave Champ a run for his money at EVO (sent him to losers and went to the last match on GF).

I mean, really. It shouldn't be Champ vs 5 killers or so from SoCal. It should be a group of greatest players from NorCal versus a team of the best from SoCal.

NorCal is basically getting carried here.

Off-topic: Welcome back, sir. :) I welcome this new age of P4A and UMVC3 theory crafting.

Well, post-EVO, Champ has pretty much downloaded Infrit.

Well, it's not like people can't learn and get better.

Champ is the best player right NOW. The UMVC3 scene would become boring as hell if he just kept on winning. And I believe there is a couple of the SoCal dudes that can at least make Champ sweat a little.

how dare you have faith in SoCal :(

Hopefully Wednesday is a better day for more Persona players. At least the KOF guys like The Answer and Reynald don't have to choose between days!

Glad to see TTT2 on the lineup for WNF. I'm getting hype for that game and want to see it played. I'll have to wait a little bit before I can get it though and it's been a while since I got into Tekken and other 3D fighters.

Do you agree with James Chen's opinion on costumes in 3D fighting games?

James Chen ‏@jchensor

Recognizing characters and immediately attaching concepts and ideas to them is super important. Costumes muddle that, IMO.

It's kinda obvious, but it's probably important to note that James Chen is referring to new players. I kinda agree. Even if I know who each character is by their name, it helps to have the visuals to reinforce concepts in my mind.

I'd need to see the rest. It seems more like the lack of costumes (rather a standardized costume) is what muddles 3D fighters. 3D fighters tend to have more customizations and options while Ryu is always Ryu. Outside of alpha, SF characters dress the same across iterations as well which gives Ryu a kind of timeless appeal.

Eh, only for online play will it really matter.

Haha, James likes to bitch a lot about other games when he's not complaining about Cammy in SF4. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You see the character portraits during loading screen and you see the head portrait next to the life bars as well. For new players, its harder knowing that all 50 something characters exist lol.

Reading through the tweets, he just wants to have TTT2 with default costumes on the stream which doesn't seem that unreasonable.

As opposed to what they did with T6?

I got a kick of Optimus Prime Jack on Tekken Crash, but I'm not sure some of the other customizations would have gone over very well. Last time I watched VF, Ken Shun was pretty disconcerting.

That and ganguro Sakura are clear support for why it should be default costumes only. Damn eyesore, especially when they use the yellow color scheme on the Mexican stage.

Costume/cosmetic options are okay as long as the character is still visibly recognizable as a certain character. This complicates when clones are involved, etc.

Look at TF2 as an example, they put tons of care way back into making identifiable silhouettes, clear cut different designs and proportions etc. And characters are STILL recognizeable in-game even through maximized cosmetic bullshit. That is masterful design, but I realize that with legacy characters this may be tough. As long as I can see the headband or the blonde hair, it's fine.

Hit boxes are generally stupid already, but key points of the body that people use to estimate relative spacing should be clear and not obscured either.

I think he's talking about stream monsters. Most people have said with VF5 that it's better to learn the few basic moves first instead of all the moves in the beginning anyway.

Honestly, this is such a minuscule issue that I don't even know why I'm making another post about it, but it's interesting seeing him recommend an idea he thinks will help the Tekken community out just to receive such a negative response (not necessarily from the Tekken community, amusingly enough). Misguided or not, I can't help but feel bad for the guy. It's not even a big issue either. What if you enter a tournament that doesn't have custom costumes? I don't think anyone would complain. I don't think this has any drawbacks to it, so I don't understand the exaggerated responses I'm seeing on Twitter.

But then again, it's Twitter, and this is a non-issue.

James Chen is getting fucking annoying, always talks about how he wants everybody to play all games but then most of his twitter posts are complaining about one thing another. With Persona it was "Oh it's so complicated, commentators really need to explain the game." and now with Tekken it's "If people use custom costumes it is gonna be too hard to identify characters and people won't want to watch."

He is so goddamn negative about anything that isn't a Capcom fighter, and it is such bullshit that he acts like he wants every game to do well.

Huh? He complains about Capcom fighters more than anything.
