Pretty sure half the reason Dragon's Crown exists is to make figures/statues.
Don't forget Doujinshi!
Er, not that I'd know anything about that, of course. Perish the thought!

So with some of you guys collecting figures and statues for a while, what are some names that you've found to make really good quality stuff ("grails" especially) and names whose products you avoid for some reason or another?
I haven't been collecting much for very long, but for me, when it comes to posable/jointed figures, on the high end side, Hot Toys seems to be pretty big especially for anything Western move related (I have their Joker 2.0 figure). For smaller posable action-figurey figures, I've been drawn to Figmas for some reason. I find the joints on their figures to be overall inconspicuous and the characters looking spot on (I'm really liking and looking forward to any Nintendo figmas e.g. Marth). One name I avoid is Play Arts Kai. I've seen some pictures and the faces often look off, but the most jarring thing to me are those knee joints...
Max Factory has almost always left a good impression on me early on. Some old Kinu Nishimura inspired fighting game statues of Morrigan and Mai Shiranui caught my attention in the past. The last statue I've purchased from them was Zero Suit Samus and is on "grail" level for me (probably a good deal due to not seeing many Nintendo related stuff). I also have Tharja pre-ordered.
With a potential barrage of Dragon's Crown stuff coming out, some names to watch for and some names to avoid may help me make better decisions (though I'll probably end up getting them all...)
My top three favorite figure manufacturers would have to be:
- Alter
- Max Factory
- Orchid Seed
I feel safe purchasing any and all figures from those three, as the quality of the end-product will always be insanely high. Good Smile Company, Phat Company, Alpha Max, and Kotobukiya also produce great figures, but not quite on the same level as the former three [in my opinion]..
I was hesitant to include GSC in the top three since their newer releases aren't quite up to the same quality as those in the past, although they are improving. They seem to do better with exclusives, but standard releases can have some quality control issues. It varies, but even with these faults, they're a pretty safe manufacturer to go with.
Phat Company/Alpha Max release some really great stuff, and are often one of the few manufacturers that will deal with a certain license [such as Phat Company with Senran Kagura]. Their quality is definitely passable, and of all of the ones I own I haven't seen any outstanding flaws on them. I feel safe pre-ordering figures from these two.
Kotobukiya is another great manufacturer. They
sometimes have painting issues, but generally, all of their products are great. Take, for example, their most recent Asuka Langely. Many say it's the best Asuka figure yet [that tsundere face!], and I feel obliged to agree. They captured her personality perfectly, and at 1/6 scale no less! Their upcoming Daisy-chan looks like perfection captured in figure-form, and if they can pull it off, will surely be one of the standouts in anyone's collection. Kotobukiya releases tend to sell out a lot faster than other manufacturers, though, so if you're interested in a particular figure, it's best to pre-order as soon as possible.
I collect One Piece figures from Megahouse [as well as the odd Queen's Blade] and definitely have no complaints. I've heard their other stuff can vary in-quality, though, so definitely be careful about pre-ordering any/everything from them. I personally feel that One Piece figures are a pretty safe bet, though. That's basically their bread-and-butter franchise.
I'll add Native to this, as well. They tend to deal with the more..."risqué" figures, but the limited nature [as well as the level of quality in the end-product] make their releases high in-demand. Their latest sculpts haven't quite been on the same upper-tier as their previous, but Cat Lap Milk looks incredible and I'm sure they have a lot more in the planning stages.
