I have Filipino parents but was born in Canada, experienced plenty of Filipino food chains in southern SoCal, but is it weird I'm not fond of any of them? I'm not even that fond of my mom's cooking (or about 60-70% of Filipino food in general). Any other Filipinos like this?

Me, maybe even 80% of Filipino food.

Admittedly, the times I've been to Jollibee, I only ever ate palabok, chicken, or burger steak. Not a fan of the spaghetti, but I didn't hate it the few times I've had it. I can't say I've eaten Filipino-style spaghetti a lot in general.

But it's also been years since I've been to one - one in New York and in the Philippines. I don't remember there being any distinct differences in taste or quality. Prices seemed ridiculous in USD though.

Jollibee is okay for the most part (I don't actively seek eating there unless I'm passing by one) compared to say McDonald's or BK, but even when I had it in the Philippines, it didn't taste any different than here in the US.

As for Filipino spaghetti, I eat it and like it but I prefer mine less sweet and without hot dogs.

Not really surprising to me. I'm Filipino born and raised in the Philippines and if I didn't grew up eating it it wouldn't be my favorite. I like my food with some / lots of spices to it like the way indians, arabs or mexicans do it.. Which is totally different on how most filipino foods are done. I remember a story where Magellan sailing to Philippines looking for spice and he can harldy find any to ship something back lol.

Also for the Jollibee spaghetti. When i was young Jollibee spag was my favorite and you couldn't feed me that italian kind of spaghetti as I thought it was straight basura for it's sour strong tomatoey taste. Now years after living here in the states for a good while now, i can say I appreciate both.

And Hotdogs in Spaghetti is

Damn what a crazy day. GAF complaining about our Jollibee food? It's the damn best food chain in the world! And the spaghetti is wonderful, although too sweet at times, but the hot dogs is something I do here in Denmark as well. I even drive for 1-1.5 hours just to get to a Jollibee. It is worth it.

Also, I like 80% of Filipino food.

Ehh, Jollibee is overrated. I do get cravings for their burgers and chicken every now and then, but I still prefer McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's overall.

I don't think it's that weird - my wife is Filipino and doesn't really care for any of the cuisine either (I actually like more than she does).

I'm gonna get slaughtered in that Jollibee thread. After reading that first page, I don't even wanna read the rest of them.

That was my main issue in that there were so many replies that were oddly fixated on the hot dogs and equated it to "struggle food", and I'm not the hugest proponent of Jollibee.

It just seemed like everyone was oddly down on all of the food - saying it looked disgusting/weird/etc. - though I don't really think it was supposed to come off like that. Then one poster was freaked out about gravy on a hamburger patty... Like really dude? It's not even that weird of a sauce.

What surprised me the most was someone being shocked that the breakfast options had rice on them.

Like, yes, Asians eat rice, is that so surprising?

Yeah that one kinda threw me for a loop. I mean, yes there are also cereal, bread, etc. as far as breakfast choices but we also eat rice for breakfast too.

How is eating a plate of sausage, eggs and rice any different than sausage, egg & pancakes? Not like either carb can't be sweet/savory/neutral in flavor.

Jollibee is basically a novelty for anyone outside of the Philippines who live in cities without one, at least personally speaking. I don't necessarily want it every single day or really crave it, but I do like it partly for the novelty and nostalgia - I moved away as a kid, so I barely remember it at this point.

I went to Jollibee while I was in New York City a couple of years ago, and I wasn't so impressed with the serving size and the price. That sort of killed the nostalgia for me.

That being said, Toronto has a huge Filipino population with a lot of Filipino restaurants (mostly cafeteria-style) that I can easily go to anytime.

This new video of Duterte speaking to the press has been getting a lot of traction n my facebook news feed. Man the guy does not hold back does he. And there are actually people comparing him to Trump? The hell?

Funny how my mother just mentioned this to me five minutes ago. He also said there is no difference between the killings of black people in the US and the killings in the Philippines?

One of my cousins liked that video, which was shared by her friend. I'm 50/50 on whether or not she supports him or not.

I'm pretty sure a few of the family members I'm going to meet when I get back are supporters of the guy. I've always made it a rule to avoid political discussions, so hopefully politics never comes up.

Clever. Don't discuss it with them. I just let my family members have their say. I don't support Duterte anymore, he have said too many strange things.

I work in a semi-business environment, so I basically avoid political and religious discussions as both a form of etiquette and personal preference.

The only way I've dealt with this when it comes up with people I meet, as you said, is let them have their say, nod your head, change the subject.

I've had discussions with various people who feel comfortable revealing to me their racism. It bothers me enough that I want to say something, but I swerve and change the subject as quickly as possible to make it as less awkward as possible.

Some of my best friends are Filipino and I just want to know certain things.

1. Does almost every Fillipino like karaoke?

2. Does every Fillipino know the "Fillipino song" where the lyrics is just singing Fillipino over and over again?

3. Is 99% the Philippines catholic?

4. What is the dark secret that anyone who is not Filipino is not allowed to know?

5. What is a cool souvenir one must get from the Phillipines that you can't get anywhere else?

4. The Aquino family are not saint or hero like what the media keeps on telling.

5. Ugh, this is hard. I guess filipino sweets

2. The national theme?
3. No. 95% are Christian. 5% are Muslim.
4. Wut?
5. A small jeepney or tricycle vroom vroom.

Well, I'm still paying for that vacation I took. When I was in the PI, I told my mother-in-law to keep the AC running and that I would cover the bill, because I wanted to be comfortable. They said it would be expensive and I said "That's fine."
I just received the bill. 29,000php. $600 USD for the AC running for like 10 days. Goddamn... I don't even know how that is possible.

I remember seeing one here for like $9 lol

Yeah, Philippines has the most expensive electricity in Asia.

Was every AC in the house running? I paid like 5k php to keep a small AC unit running for a month.

My mom and I use 2 1HP aircons, mine is usually only on about 4 hours a day but hers can go 8 hours or longer. We pay about 3.5K per month

Holy shit. You must've chilled the hell out of the entire bario lmao.

1. No, but majority likes it.
2. if you ar e referring to the song of that half filipino black eyed pea member, then no. The title i think is Bebot. Darn i just remembered i can rap that entire song lol.
3. No, there's a pretty big Muslim population in south of the country and certain parts of Manila.
4. Hmmm. 🤔 .
5. Barrel man. Or jeepney in the bottle.

1. Not all of us, though there's a high chance a typical filipino house will have a magic sing or a karaoke machine laying around.

2. That is Bebot though it's just mostly for the chorus and some of the first verse.

3. Most of Davao I believe are Muslim and there are different sects of christianity like Iglesia Ni Christo and such all over the Philippines.

4. I think since the Philippines is a very Catholic country, anything that is out of the normal Catholic thinking is somewhat frowned upon such as abortions, same sex marriage, etc.

5. I really like getting cool t-shirts from the Philippines like a San Mig shirt or a Voltes V shirt.

Re: the AirCon
They have a nice wall unit on the first floor that was running 8+ hrs a day. If I was awake and downstairs, it was on. They would turn it off when I would go out and then when it t back turn it on, and I would leave it on until 2 or 3 AM. That one downstairs was pretty powerful and got the air to an extremely cold temperature. I mean, I love the cold tremendously but there were times where I thought 'man, this is TOO cold.' There was also a standup fan that was on for quite a while in the day.
Upstairs in our room there was an wall unit that got things pretty cold and that ran all night, as well as a fan next to the bed pointed right at my face. Then across the hall there was an AC unit in another room that like 7 people slept in, but I didn't even know that until a couple days before I left when there were repair guys there to fix it because it had broke. I don't know how much use that one got, because everyone that slept in there was used to the heat. I think they just used a fan most of the night in there.
There was also a TV downstairs that was on for more than half of the day everyday, one upstairs that got used a lot, a water cooler, and probably 20 various phones and iDevices that were plugged in and charging for most of the day everyday.
I expected it to be more than my electric bill in my apartment, but it still took me by surprise. I was thinking maybe $300 on the high end, but nope. $600...

We have 2 non-inverter split type 1hp AC units that are on for at least 12 hours a day for about a month and our average bill just for the AC is 4-6k a month lol (AC unit on a separate line with its own electricity meter).

Going to be there in a little over a week. I've been checking the forecast in Manila randomly - rain, rain, more rain, some sun maybe. lol

Yeah, it's the rainy season unfortunately. It is up until October. September and October are regarded as the typhoon season as well.

But don't let that bother you. It'll still be hot and humid, and time can still be enjoyed. Have a safe flight and enjoy your trip!

Rain is on-off.

Traffic is still messy.

How are things going here?

lol I just checked the weather for the next seven days since I'm going to be there by early next week - thunderstorms according to the weather app on my iPhone.

So that's great.

I have unsubscribed from all Filipino news sources on Facebook, removed them from my RSS and I'm ignoring comments from the Filipino people on social media. I just can't handle it, and it makes me feel uneasy, so now that I'm free of all this shit, I can go back to being happy. I also ignore talking about these things with my family members.

My cousin even got number plates with the text "Du30 is my president"...

I'm half Flip and Manny is honesty embarrassing. He's like every stereotype about us come to life.

This too.

Yea I mean. Some little violent man with a mustache, the homophobia, dumb beyond words who can barely speak. He is literally everything my grandparents taught me not to be.

Two persons I'm afraid to mention to my extended family is Rodrigo Duterte and Fernando Marcos. They love them to death. I bought a book about Marcos that is supposed to be the most accurate, so I'll be reading that soon.

Emilio Aguinaldo is always OK at the dinner table.

The dude really was a fucking hero.

I've never followed Philippine politics and news all that closely, so my social media feed almost free of any mention of it.

Now, I see "almost" because the information I usually get about anything happening in the Philippines is based on international news coverage and Facebook friends who live there that also post about it.

I'd get stuff like the Davao bombing (not that I would avoid it), but maybe not anything that's local headlines like a robbery or something.

I only just started following all the news media after my vacation last April, and I'm already tired of reading about it on social media. Don't fall into the same trap comrade! ^_^

I try not to dive into that rabbit hole too deeply, even with Canadian politics which are fairly tame in comparison (or in general).

Marcos ruined the economy, stole billions of dollars, tortured and murdered tens of thousands and left their bodies in the streets, built a fucking giant monument to himself, and perhaps worst of all, banned video games.

And how do the people react after finally deposing him? They give his wife and children cushy government jobs and almost elected Bongbong as Vice President, which he definitely would have used as a stepping stone to become President.

People Power was one of the most beautiful movements in the history of the world, and it saddens me that the lessons learned from it have been forgotten. It really won't surprise me if we see an EDSA IV in a few years' time.

Something needs to be done about the history teachings in the school of the Ilocos province at least. There everybody are teached in how great Marcos was for the country, and how all books criticizing him are fake. Dammit was I speechless when my cousin told me. It's only recently I have opened my eyes to all of this and their views.
