Yeah, I'm shopping for supplies later.

I'm staying in a condominium in Makati. The AC is located in the bedroom. I cranked it up to its max setting and left the door open to cool down the entire unit. It's partly effective. There's a fan as well. It's not too hot in general though. Surely warm when we first came in, but it's cooled down.

There's a lot of foreigners in the building where I'm staying, so I feel like this place is pretty heavy with renting for short term. I think I've seen one person who seems to live there full time - he had his door open and it was fully furnished, though it looked like a bigger unit than where I'm staying.

We were offered a car to use, but after seeing the traffic and the way people drive on my way from the airport, I'm not driving here, lol.

I respect cold showers even more now.

I forgot that you get checked by guards at every mall entrance. I literally got a quick three pats on my lower back and that was it. Seems pointless, but I can respect the vigilance.

If you have a bag, they use their drumstick to prod it for no reason.

Joking aside, it is an SOP for every mall, and people are used to it.

Nope. Killed Antonio Luna and Andres Bonifacio, wanted to surrender the revolution, sucked up to the Americans, collaborated with the Japanese.

Aguinaldo was no hero.

Haha. We will always be a people at odds with our own leaders, I suppose. I thought he was OK, but like any person of stature, was flawed.

Everywhere else I've been to so far just let me through without a pat. I got used to it as the day went on.

There are a lot more tourists and foreigners in general from the last time I was back, it seems. Plenty of businessmen, just as many older white men in short-sleeve buttoned-up shirts with women attached to them, some with their kids.

I was actually speaking with a Russian guy working at the mall handing out flyers for a store, and we were talking about the fish out of water experience - more him than me, but I feel it in less of a capacity too. He quickly figured out that I wasn't local.

The BPO industry has brought more foreigners in, as well as old retirees looking to stretch their pensions. I know there's even a department store somewhere with Israelis selling those Dead Sea products.

I was actually thinking real estate based on the developments I'm noticing (plus being hounded by agents at the mall), but that makes more sense.

Anyone use the TFC IPTV box? I'm thinking of getting it since that's the last thing that's keep me from cancelling Comcast and my family needs their TFC.

Got screwed over by an Uber driver earlier. I was leaving my hotel and I got an Uber to head back to where I've been staying the last week. My phone said it was arriving soon, so I was waiting by the lobby. Five minutes pass and all of a sudden, he started the trip. I cancelled immediately and got charged 120PHP as the minimum since it was an Uber Black.

I took an Uber Black to the hotel a couple of days ago since it allowed me to write up specific instructions ("Need a large vehicle for luggage"), and I thought I'd do the same thing going back.

Already sent a complaint through Uber support about the driver, hopefully they get in touch soon.

The hotel ended up getting a Grab taxi for me, which is actually pretty good.

I think I've only ever read about Grab, but while my experience is very limited to it, it seems like such a good idea as a central taxi service. Seems like it's only for Southeast Asia for now.

The taxi landscape in North America is a bit different than here, but Grab seems like a really neat middle ground to for the taxi industry to catch up with technology.

How long has Grab been operating in Manila? Seems like it's been integrated by the taxis here for some time.

Edit: I know Madridista (RIP account...for now?) was looking for some kind of Jollibee souvenir to bring back with him. Jollibee has a toy you can buy at their store right now that talks. It's fucking hilarious and I might buy a couple more as souvenirs.

Sorry for the double post.

What's the opinion on Bench these days? I've been hitting up Uniqlo, but overlooked completely Bench.

I like the selections they have from what I've seen on the website, especially a couple of the jackets and accessories. I'm probably going to hit it up tomorrow and see what they have in store.

Edit: they seem to sell a shit ton of watches on the website. Did not expect to see watches.

Bench is ok. Ben Chan is one of the richest retail tycoons in the country, and his brother owns Liwayway Marketing which produces the cheap yet good quality and widespread Oishi snacks and drinks.
I do wonder how Penshoppe, another local fashion chain, affords all these expensive foreign models though (Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, etc. They had Mandy Moore back in the 2000s.)

I used to think Penshoppe was just a brand in the general Asian/Southeast Asian region, but only recently found out it's a Filipino brand just sold here.

Bench has basics and minimal branding on their stuff (at least from what I've seen online so far), so they check off a couple of requirements for me.

Also, my internet connection is either shit or Bench's website fucking sucks. Couldn't get it to load at all after browsing for a few minutes.

And Uber refunded the fare from that shitty driver I mentioned. That was still fucking annoying, but at least Uber was quick to act on it.

Bench sells a ton of items. From shirts and jeans to underwear, cologne, hair care products, accessories, even popcorn lol.

Its quality is fine. Just isn't that good as Uniqlo. But it's cheaper so that's pretty much expected.

My mom uses it. I feel like the picture quality is actually better than what comes with her Cox cable package. There's a few "channels" to choose from. I think it's also meant to be able to be moved from room to room but it's probably too clunky to do regularly.

Went to Mall of Asia earlier, I probably haven't even explored 10% of the place, and it already felt a little overwhelming since it started crowding up a little after noon. My Uber driver was really hyping it up.

I had a chance to check out the ice rink too. Ice sheet is a little thin but it's fine. It was just me and four other people skating earlier - one of them was from LA and we basically spent the whole time talking hockey, so that was cool. Two others were figure skaters practicing, and a kid doing laps. Might be because it's Thursday, but it didn't seem busy, which was perfect for me.

I was expecting a giant indoor complex, but it ended up being a mix of indoor and outdoor areas, but I probably don't need to describe the place in detail to anyone who lives here. I guess this makes sense financially for the owners.

To my surprise, Shin Godzilla/Godzilla Resurgence is playing in the theatre there. I almost dropped my afternoon plans to watch it. I know that it's coming out in North America in October though.

That being said, I'm thinking about going back tomorrow and explore more, maybe watch Godzilla. I want to see the bay too. I had a glimpse of it while in my Uber going north of the mall and along the main street there.

Personally I never liked MOA's design with the mix of outdoor and indoor areas. It's why I prefer Megamall, which technically has more floor area than MOA now because of the new "Mega Fashion Hall" building they added in 2014.

I was basically expecting a bigger Megamall, and even that already looked massive when I was there three years ago. The mix of indoor and outdoor areas threw me off, and it makes sense that a lot of people crowded indoors since it's generally pretty hot outside.

Now that I had a chance to sleep it over, I'm probably not going back to MOA today.

I'm back home now. It was a good trip - it was nice being back to see family and just to take it all in.

The weather was initially hot as hell, but it seemed to have cooled down for most of my trip, at some point enough that I could wear jeans for a couple of days.

Despite my rule of not talking politics, that seems to be the #1 topic that popped up. Thankfully, I've only talked politics with at least some like-minded individuals, or those who are open to listening to differing views.

#2 is traffic and how people can easily buy cars. The way people talk about it, the financial aspects of it doesn't seem healthy, but I'm not about to lecture anybody about finances or something lol.

On a personal note, I haven't experienced gridlock too much, but I made sure to be in transit outside rush hours. I was stuck in my Uber for 40 minutes at most.

Yeah, it's way too easy to get a car here because of low downpayments and installment schemes, but many of those vehicles end up getting repossessed by the banks or dealers because people can't keep up with the payments.
Also I really hope they pass that bill requiring you own a garage before buying a car - lots of people just park their cars on the streets outside their houses, which adds to the traffic.

Not long till I fly over for my first visit. Its pretty funny but I work with about 12 Filipinos and I swear everyone of them has a cousin that has a travel agency over there haha.

Havent sorted anything yet though. land in manilla then ???. Plans to dive with wale sharks, go to the rice terrace and maybe go up mount mayon (?)

This mother fucking evil asshole

Senator Paquiao shouts "Left and right killings in the philippines has god's blessing"

It isn't a huge deal yet but apparently there is a petition to change the name of NAIA to something else (Philippines International Airport or Manila International Airport) that is gaining traction and has people talking. Some pretty dumb comments floating around about Ninoy being a "traitor" and "The airport belongs to the Philippines, not to the Aquinos." Is this something that pops up every now and then or is it something that is only popular now due to the issues the country is currently suffering from?
It's not likely to happen, is it? I know Duterte has a lot of senators and government officials in his pocket at the moment.

EDIT: Speaking of Ninoy, does anyone have any recommendations for good books about him, People Power, and the Marcos regime? I know some were being discussed by someone earlier in the year but I figured I would ask before combing through the pages since maybe someone had read the ones being discussed back then and had input.

Well, with Duterte in power, who owes the Marcos family something, it's really no surprise.

I don't agree with the decision, but as long as the current administration and the Marcos family are in a mutual relationship behind the scenes, there's nothing you can do about it.

This is one of those times I'm ashamed to be Filipino. The guy basically raped our country and they're giving him a hero's burial? Fuck this shit.

It is a very sad thing, seeing the contrast between the reaction of the Marcos family versus the reaction of surviving Martial Law victims. I am hopeful though, seeing the amount of protest against this decision from young people.
But the pervasive idea that the victims of ML deserved torture and death because they were dissenters against Marcos is one that I keep hearing over and over again, and I am infuriated by this lack of empathy from Marcos supporters.
The worship they have for this man is disgusting.

How am I not surprised that after months and months of talking shit about the Obama and the US, Duterte is so quick to kiss Trump's Ass?
I'm guessing he finds a kinship with their lack of respect for women.
(Holy shit, how in the world does VP Robredo endure all the shit that Duterte keeps saying about her?)

How can you not get it? They are the same idiots who would vote for Duterte and Marcos if he ever rose from the grave. Pandering to the lowest common denominator is what these guys did best.

so true, this makes me sad

she already complained about it, but of course nothing happened with his supporters saying he was doing it as a compliment

2016, what a year

The Marcos burial is just political play in a form of a dead body. There are no solutions that would pacify both parties. I bet that after the body is buried, political parties will still push agendas for themselves. Justice will never be served.
