I'd be satisfied if we get FFXV(+quick XVsequels)+ FFVIIR this gen and it would be good enough for me.

Just praying to the Lord that we don't get 'Versus'ed with 7R.

I mean we know the game has been in development for at least a year, possibly a year and a half. So if the game releases in 2017 it may have seen 3-4 years of development, which is pretty good.
Also 2017 wouldn't mean they'd rush it out for the January anniversary, it could release as a holiday title.

Thanks to this thread I just finally did the intro of FFX-2! So I thought I'd post battle system impressions here since thats what so many peeps were on about!

What in the world was going on?! Everythings bright an flashy, everyones jittering around like they're on Haste, there was a spinning fat guy, something about chains, an I just don't even know!

Ohhhhh. I can set the battle system to Wait so I can watch an think some things through just like in FFVII? But I guess there's still no real turn order since I picked Steal first and Attack second yet the attacker attacked an killed the dude before the stealer could steal from him... x.x?
 
Been playing through FFVII Steam recently, and it's got me interested to see how Square is going to tackle this game!

This is without a doubt the most ambitious remake ever undertaken in videogame history, and for that reason it is unprecedented. Final Fantasy VII is beloved by many, so anticipation is running high for Square to deliver an outstanding remake. In order to do so, Square has to not only capture the feeling of the original game, but also modernize it for the current generation. I envision this being the most difficult aspect of the remake, and worry that the elements of the original that people are nostalgic for may get lost in translation. Outside of the sheer difficulty of attempting to modernize a beloved classic, Square must face the daunting task of recreating the world of Gaia with a detail level deserved of its namesake. This is Final Fantasy VII after all, and in a world of GTAV, Uncharted 4, Batman: AK and The Witcher 3 Square has its work cutout for it.

I look forward to following the development of this game simply to see how they approach this challenge, and look forward to playing it regardless when it comes out.
 
I hope they take some liberties with changing up the story. Like I had this cool idea, in the original scene when Aeris dies, don't have her die in the remake. Let Cloud get up there and save her this time. Everyone would be like "omg Aeris lives in this game!". But then, a few hours later in the story, she gets killed after all! So the players could all have legitimate emotion again like when she died in the original, rather than just seeing the original death scene with prettier graphics (which would have less emotional impact).

It'd be funny if they pulled some shit like Corpse Party: Book of Shadows
so Cloud will know what's going to happen but he'll still be unable to save her.

It's kind sad what Versus XIII did with the company's image. We're still less than 2 years through this generation and people are wondering this kind of thing =p

I'm pretty sure FF VII Remake will be released on PS4.

That's exactly the kind of thing I hope they do.

Completely mess with our expectations without actually changing what the core of the story is all about.
 
The thing I want to see the most is how the world design is in this game. Is everything connected by road? Seeing road signs for Kalm and Junon in Midgar sort of suggests that everything is connected.

I really just want to see this happen in current gen. Wonder how gaf would have been when this came out and people fought this creature who wasnt in the original japanese version.

I doubt FF7-R will have to deal with the project being scrapped for one console generation in place for another along or being shifted to an entirely new engine, and 95% of the staff being shifted / moved to fix some other project to slow it down. Those were the problems that plagued Versus' conversion into FFXV. I don't think any of these things are factors for FFVII:R

I think that is unlikely, they now have a new CEO and they've probably learned a valuable lesson with xiii, xiv, and versus xiii. To be honest, with the rate that ffxv (after the reboot), kh3 (according to recent interviews), and ffxiv:arr were developed (and released in the case of arr); I wouldn't be surprised if timely releases are at the top priority list at Square Enix, next to quality control.

On a more serious note, I've already read about how the source code and the assets old their older games got "lost" or deleted or whatever and this is really something that just doesn't go into my head. How can you delete something like that or how can it get lost, without a backup at all? I just can't imagine why you would do that, even after shipping a project.

Its Square Enix if there is anything to fuck up they will fuck it up.
 
It seems to me that they don't have any remote idea about how they will design the battle system, other than "modernize it".

What about waiting until they actually talk about it and show it? The only two things Nomura said so far was that they're modernizing it and that having the party members standing on the same spot jumping back and forth would look bizarr, which I agree with.

Shhhh. They didn't reveal all the details right away. So surely it means they don't know what to do with the battle system! It's obviously the only logical explanation.

readup on the development of Toy Story 2, and how at once point the whole film was deleted accidentally and all was thought lost (except magically a staff member on maternity leave had taken a full backup home with her to work on while out of the office)

think about that for a second, a 100 million + $ film and no proper backup.

more realistically Square Marketing knows that this is a long way out and they want to keep information trickling out rather than just letting it all out at once and having nothing more to talk about for the next 2 years.

Its a marketing move, pure and simple. He probably would love nothing more than to tell fans everything, but marketing is there to say "no, we have a strategy to maximize the interest and profitability of this game, stick to it".

Watched Advent Children again last night in celebration.

Still such an awesome movie. Fan service everywhere and the story makes more sense with the Complete Edition.

I know the one sticking point with some people is Cloud being sad and depressed, but I honestly thought it was deserved given the events of the movie. Aeris died and went to the Lifestream, so from Cloud's perspective, the Lifestream inflicting people with Geostigma as some sort of revenge takes a disturbingly personal connotation, and explains why he feels so much guilt and desires forgiveness (from Aeris in particular) when that wasn't as evident at the end of FF7. Also, it was smart to have a few more scenes involving Denzel since part of why Cloud left is also because Denzel got the Stigma, and he couldn't do anything about it.

But other than that, Cloud doesn't seem like a different character. He's still a jerk and occasionally snarky. He's just a lot more melancholy than usual, and I think it's justified.

Good insight. Cloud works with that temperament inside of the Advent Children story. He's not the same person that he was during Final Fantasy VII but you can trace the evolution of his character.

First of all, it was Squaresoft back then. And it's not exclusive to them either. Microsoft apparently deleted the assets and files from Ensemble Studio's (Age of Empires, Halo Wars) after they shut them down, because for the remaster of AoE 2, they had to rip (and crack?) files from retail discs, because they didn't have the source files anymore. I'm honestly totally ignorant about huge projects of that scale and the amount of data they generate, but how do you not put all that stuff into a vault or something?

Just watched the trailer again (5 times) after watching their review. It really is a fucking perfect trailer, especially for fans of the original.

I love the way the narrator is both speaking to us, the fans who have been waiting for this, while also referencing plot points of the game itself. Very cleverly written.

Nothing concrete, but Ito has been awfully quiet and other staffers' comments have seemed to indicate that he has been working on something for quite awhile. I read a rumor that he is working on what was originally planned to be XV and is now XVI. If XV releases early 2016 and FF7R is indeed handled by CC2, then I think there is a decent chance we will see XVI this gen...especially if they're either reusing Luminous or going full-steam ahead with Unreal.

If you google Final Fantasy XVI, one of the top results is an analysis of years of interviews and Twitter conversations that someone compiled which seem to hint that it is in production and being helmed by Ito. I'd link to it, but not sure which sources are banned.

I'll go so far to say that this trailer essentially proves to me that Nomura knows it, can handle it, and I'll trust his "remake" creative decisions way more than anyone else here who's concerned about the remake and the changes.

Because I'll say this. I don't believe anyone here, even if they had Nomura's game directing and cinematography talent, would've made that trailer the way it was. It truly was a trailer that imo, respects FFVII to its utmost. It trust the fans, it trust the source material, there's a confidence in that trailer that speaks to the heart of skeptics, as if the trailer is there to tell you "trust us, this is our vision of the remake."

Someone as shallow as me would've been tempted to easily reuse any iconic imagery, soundtrack, you know, typical 101 trailer making skills, but FFVII trailer was none of that. It was to the extent that the game didn't even have FFVII in it, it' was just the meteor logo.

This likely won't happen ,but it sure as hell may take over 5 years to come which sucks.

Anyway,we'll see how the development course plays out soon enough.

It shows a certain degree of tact and subtlety no one else would have displayed really.

In a way the trailer let's us know exactly what to expect. Different, but familiar.
