I hope they give Cloud green eyes in the remake so we have something else to argue about.

Like this?

Would also satisfy the "feminine Cloud" camp here :P

Hell no. They need to be full HD realistic models because I hope to Gentle Jesus that there is no random encounters.

I'm a strong proponent of having random encounters, but I recently found a good compromise in FFT-0, that being both random and visual encounters. I think this would please both camps to a degree, while still maintaining random events like Yuffie, and so not altering the game to drastically in combat.

You trying to tell me this looks like a gritty, masculine man? He's always been a pretty boy.

I wish they'd keep the anime eyes :( I feel the drift away from that has cost the art style some. I'd rather have a stylized game that will hold up over time than a real looking one.

Can't wait to see the character models. This winter is going to be amazing!

You're saying that the reason he made it through the dress segment was because of his femininity, then?

You believe that those segments lack humor and are super serious?

Edit: Also, what do you believe about when that trope is used in other works of fiction? I've mentioned it twice, you've come in and responded twice, but not really addressed that. Do you feel that if a man pulls that off in fiction, he must be overwhelmingly effeminate?

That's the question I'm just asking.
The reason they didn't address that question is probably because it has nothing to do with the subject at hand (whether or not Cloud is legitimately passable as a girl). It doesn't matter if another game or whatever has used the trope so that the dude in question is masculine but still passes as a girl. That's a different joke and one that isn't used here.

Just because the segment (or even the game as a whole) has comedic elements to it doesn't mean that everything is ironic. Cloud being effeminate is played straight in every instance. Even Tifa didn't realize it was Cloud until it was pointed out.

The thing is, he becomes sullen and depressed everywhere. He's sullen and depressed it both Dissidia and all Kingdom Hearts. Heck, even the general populace remember him as such, as demonstrated by the oft-repeated "emo" accusation. I can understand the apprehension.

Well in KH1 he's beaten down by the darkness and supposed to be aping Vincent(i still dont know why they had Cloud have vincents uniform or attitude), and in KH2 he was supposed to be aping his AC counterpart....dissidia i dunno...

But but, i'm sure its fine!

If I recall correctly it was because originally it was going to be Vincent that was in the game. They later decided to have Cloud instead due to recognizability or something and they ended up him some of Vincent's attire.

I could be completely off though.

Per the Kingdom Hearts Ultimania interview with Nomura:

--Also, about Cloud, isn't the left-hand side of his design modelled on FFVII's Vincent?

Nomura: Yes, his left arm is in Vincent's image. This time, in this setting, Cloud is leaning towards the dark side, and I wanted to make him a bit more demon-like. And, since Vincent was exactly that kind of design, I just added it in. Although I would have liked to put Vincent in the game too...

I have zero hope they're going to give Cloud any charisma, so I'm prepared for both he and Sephiroth to look very serious and/or depressed and androgynous. I just hope Red and Cid look cool. I already know Tifa will be fine, so that will cap off my party. I liked their design in AC, so we'll see I guess.

I wonder how they're going to handle Cloud going over his
misconstrued
past with Sephiroth and their 'battles' together. That entire segment was like 45 mins-1 hour long if you didn't skip the dialogue right?

Edit: Man, all of this FFVII talk...I think I'm going to buy the PS1 game on PSN. Or Steam.

It was brought into this discussion quite directly, which interests me.
His ability to pass as a girl in that segment was cited as evidence of looking enough like one to do so.

So I asked for thoughts on other times the trope has been used. (Sarcastically, because I see that notion as silly.)

Hey at least you answered. ^_^ OK, so you don't think that was using humor or irony? That's interesting to me. I'm seeing things from new angles here. :) Thanks.

Still impressed how huge this announcement is & how many people talk about it.

at my part-timejob at a restaurant most of the guys know this game and can't wait for it, even tough some of them quit gaming :P

Having seen other react videos, I'm amazed that there were quite a few supposed fans who had no idea FFVII was about to come up when it was so obvious that the Lifestream was on display on the background behind Boyes.

I've heard
"it's KH!!"
"it's Uncharted"
"it's GOW!!"
or just clueless "what is this?" until well into the trailer.

CC Cloud was the most charismatic he ever was, so i dont doubt they'll get it right

That along with looking at his design and character art were references to why Cloud would be iffeminate and not a super masculine soldier type as that one dude was saying.

Like I said, it isn't that the segment is without humor, it's just that the joke isn't "Haha this character is obviously a guy but they think he's a girl".

Is it me or is SOLDIER spelled out as S.O.L.D.I.E.R. in that shirt?

Are they retconning the term into a monicker? They're ruining my GAF and PSN name!

I want my cloud and sephiroth to stay effeminate. There's a reason why there is so much cloud x sephiroth fanfic manga out there you know.

Why? It is obviously wrong.

Hey, it took Square only 1 year of all-hands-on-deck-actual development to complete FFVII. They've apparently been working on the remake for 1 year already (it's been stated that development started months before the December PSE announcement). And chances are this is running Unreal Engine, so less complication there. Another 12-16 months for completion doesn't seem completely unreasonable.

I know it's wishful thinking, but so much of FFVII is already "done". Characters, story, world and towns, the overall concept (materia, etc.) - that alone can usually end up being worth over 1 year of time. From concept to full-on development it took 16 months (mid-1994 to end of 1995). Prior to full development of the game, it existed as a working concept, but was extremely barebones as all other staff at SquareSoft was busy with tons of other projects.

January 1996 the game was formally announced. January 1997 the game was released.

Late 2016/Early 2017 doesn't seem like an enormous stretch to me, either way. And you can bet your bottom dollar that this game will receive tons of DLC after release, so the core release will likely be the original game itself.

It's not done though, all of that stuff has to be remade.

Because it's a remake.

He's talking about conceptualization. It takes a shitload of time to come up with a concept, story, world design, character design, combat concept, etc. even apart from having to actually build assets and write code, and a great deal of that stuff is complete. Sure, they'll have to go back and add to/edit the script, decide on the specifics of the remake's combat, make what subtle changes to characters they want, etc. But that won't take nearly as much time as making up a whole new world/story/cast/etc. from scratch.
