Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

"who wants a remake to be the same gameplay?! play the original!"

most acclaimed, successful remakes:

Resident Evil

Metroid: Zero Mission

Final Fantasy 4 DS

Dragon Quest 4, 5, 6, 7

*none of which dramatically changed the gameplay *

Zero mission changed it hugely from Metroid. Hugely.

I wish it was more stylised like the original pencil artworks as the original chibi avatars gave the atmosphere a certain charm. I think how realistic the style is seems to make the game look as if it takes itself too seriously.

It'll be interesting to see how the lighter notes of FFVII are represented with such a serious style.

I hope Cloud still twirls off-stage in the Gold Saucer date.

Actually that is what it looks like considering Cloud does his special attack and Barrett uses big shot only when the gauge is filled.

Welpppp

So does that mean this is actually full arpg? Not seeing anything else that indicates otherwise other than some camera angles

edit: and the camera angle thing is probably because at one point, Barret was being used and not Cloud

I'm a "hardcore" fan and I'm fine with this change. It's a remake. The battle system was always going to be more action oriented. It looks amazing.

I don't see how this combat is anymore dull than picking a command and watching your character attack.

I get your point but a turn based combat will always have more depth and strategy than an action based one.

No turn based combat and not even the original composer in the team is a huge turn off for the fans.

I hope somewhat this turns things best for the remake.

I still don't understand how this is a valid argument for keeping the same combat system. It was the combat encounters themselves that were important, in my opinion, not necessarily the the fact that you experienced them through the ATB system.

The encounters were fun because the ATB system, the core mechanics, are a solid jrpg combat system. Nothing special, and FF7 has a barebones interpretations of it, but solid.

Now, this could be spiced up or added to in a remake. Make the game better. They did not do this.

They made a different game entirely. This is a game that for the vast majority of its running time will not play like the original game for the vast majority of its runtime.

Which can all still happen in a more action-ey battle system. Nothing that truly defines FFVII for the overwhelming majority of the audience requires the game's combat system to be exactly like the PS1 version's. Yeah, you still need some aspects of it, like Materia, LBs, and summons, but you don't need the characters to line up on opposite sides of the battlefield and act one at a time.

Stop speaking in absolutes with this "vast majority" stuff. We don't know that because all we have to go on are biased polls.

And I'll say it again, how is the sheer amount of materia actions going to work with a frantic battle system. You can't be scrolling through them and you sure as hell can't map them to face buttons.

How do you manage to juggle dozens of spells/summons/special attacks between 3 characters in real time? I feel like what is going to happen is that each character will each get a few hot keyed spells that can be swapped and some special attacks and a limit break. I'm worried you'll lose that encyclopedia of attacks for each character.

It's possible. Maybe there will be a way to "pause" the action

This thread is moving fast. Have we gotten any concrete details on the combat system yet or are we still just speculating at this point?

Back home, watched the FF7 remake vid... Boy am I happy right now. It looked great, and I'm kinda happy it's not turned based. If it was turn based I would want it to be paced pretty fast, and I would not want random battles. The random battles wore on my patience even as a kid, now it would probably dissuade me from playing often. I love Divinity OS first map but every time by the second map I grow tired of the slow pace of waiting on my turns, unless the fight is good and interesting. A good battle keeps me awake.

I would like if they use their experience with handling tons of spells from FFXIV. The controller setup in FFXIV is awesome, I don't know if FFXV has real time with pause play but FFXII does, I hope they have real time with pause in this so we can be malicious with our fights, strategy, and brutal difficulty settings.

The feels will be all over this game, also what if they throw us a curve ball and Aerith doesn't die? haha Random character dies, gear lost again!!!!

FFVII's combat was actually a rather cinematic experience back in 1997.

And so is this.

FFVIIR is developed with modern sensibilities, just how FFVII was in the mid-90s. It's a pretty sweet take on a remake, and it's faithful in that sense for me.

Speak for yourself. I've completed FF7 about 10 times. The combat in it is nothing remarkable at all. It's probably one of the weakest aspects of the game, actually. Where FF7 excels is the story and atmosphere.

Indeed. I still consider it one of my favorite games ever(and nothing's going to change that) but what made the experience more than anything else was diving into that world.

It's one of the reasons why I'm anxious about the voice acting.

As long as the combat is fluid and enjoyable I'm good with it in that regard.

I'm giddy just thinking about how the Weapons will look. And Costa Del Sol, Wutai, Icicle Inn, Junon, the Seventh Heaven... so many iconic locales.

I came to realize something quite obvious - but we will most likely get to fight Guard Scorpion twice! One time on the bridge (after setting up the bomb, like in the original) and once more on the train (since we clearly see him engage Barret and Cloud in the video as well. X-ATM092 from FFVIII, anyone?).

Maybe the second time will only be a cutscene? This also signifies that Barret won't be in the train with the the small AVALANCHE group when Cloud is 'missing'. UNLESS, of course, Cloud tells Barret to get out of there while he fights the Guard Scorpion alone. In which case everyone gets worried that Clouds gets wiped on the boss and then joins the group with the flip ("Cloud!" "Cloud!!" "Cloud!" "...").

I pointed out some things in the trailer that support some level of the game not being entirely action based, but I think the topic is moving too quickly.

Pffft, we'll live. Action RPG won't be shunned by me anytime soon. Plus, that Sephiroth fight... kreygasm

Oh geez, HOW COME I DIDN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT.

Mostly i'm eager to see the interactions with the turks (especially since then they got a bit more fleshed out), as well as everything gold saucer related

Well is this actually what we can expect or just footage created for a trailer, like FFXV's 2013 one? This is fucking amazing but i don't want to be let down again.

To me, that would be the ideal solution. Otherwise, it's going to be impossible to juggle between spells and items and attacks. Hell, trying to get the right spell/item used in a critical time during ATB can be tricky at times. Real-time would be hell in those situations.

they kinda have to as thats how Sephiroth summons Meteor lol

I think what I meant was having access to pick from any equipped Summon during battle and unleashing it, watching a cool mini cut scene and then your enemies being crushed :). I used to love finding them too.

I'm in the same boat.

I'm more scared that they'll drop Genesis or Deep Ground in the game somewhere, now that will make me throw Bitch Fit Fest 2016.

But so far everything in regards to the original scenario has been incredibly faithful, even down to small insignificant shit like Cloud flipping off the train.

None of us have played this new combat system or seen what kind of encounters they have planned. It could be amazing. I prefer to wait and see.

I just flat out disagree that the combat system employed in the original was what caused it to be successful, was what people remember the most about the game, and is what must absolutely be preserved in this remake in order for it not to be completely different. I think that's completely wrong. As you say, it was pretty barebones and nothing special. It was fine, of course, but even at the time people were complaining about how it was kind of dumbed down compared to other JRPGs.

It's a remake. With a new Battle system. If you want to play the old battle system with updated character models. They just released it on PS4 today.

They are remaking it with what looks to be a more action oriented combat system. GOOD. Let me have full control of it all. Let me mimic the fights in Advent children.

My dream came true. They did get rid of the dated and shit battle system.

This could end up decent.

One thing with switchable characters is how much depth there will be for each character, and what the party dynamic (AI) will be in battle. The bestiary will be much smaller in this one too since it's action combat. I'm sure they considered all of this, though. I'm not too worried but it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

That trailer looked fucking awesome despite being so early. I didn't even expect in game footage tbh. I'm fine with the combat system change personally. Can't wait to see how they are handling summons.

i just don't understand people that already condemn the game because of the new Battlesystem.
I mean they don't even know if the new BS is god/fun or not

what about the other aspects? The World, Music, Characters, Minigames?
Well we don't know anything about the other aspects so it's hard to have a discussion on them. Except music. Nobuo Uematsu isn't coming back :(

This thread makes me feel like most people didn't actually like the original game all that much.

I'm starting to feel like the 20 years of people claiming FFVII is the best game they've ever played are all in my head or something, when we have self proclaimed huge fans bending over backwards to brag about how much they hated the hours and hours of time they put into beating the original.

Yes, a remake.

When people get nostalgic about Final Fantasy VII, it's almost certainly for the plot, characters, sound, and setting.

So then again, you deserve a TellTale game remake of FF7. Or a movie.

I'm nostalgic about all of FF7, not the parts I pick and choose for the sake of winning arguments.

Ehhhh. Battle system looks like a carbon copy of FFXV with different abilities (which is serviceable, but not particularly great), and the art style is bland as shit. It looks like one of those fan "we ported ff7 to unreal engine" projects.

Dropping turn-based is fine, but I hope they do something interesting with it. Plugging Cloud and friends into FFXV's exact battle system would be real disappointing. Now that I think about it, the crouching / wall clinging looks exactly like FFXV, too. I know they gotta get a return on that investment, but it really needs to establish it's own identity outside of nostalgia. Hype deflating.

Going by how rough it looks, and the FPS, I see no reason to think it's not genuine.
Plus, SE were in no rush to show footage anyway (they only just revealed it a few months ago) so if they had nothing to show they could have waited like another year before people started getting antsy about seeing it.

Just realized Tifa will be playable in real time.
Hand to hand combat in action games is my fetish. I'm suddenly okay with the real time combat.
