Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

Everytime I watched the trailer, I keep saying to myself that this isn't happening. I'm just speechless at how great the game looks, and the combat looks phenomenal. I can't wait to see Sephiroth and Tifa's design.

I watched the trailer at least 50 times today :)

Bravo.

I wonder how much of that "gameplay" was target render vs what it'll eventually look like. I'm getting a lot of SE Bullshot bullshit cgi nonsense from those battle scenes like with the first 13 trailer, Versus trailers, and Kh3 trailers.

I don't see how that could be considering the framerate. Its running on PS4 no doubt. The in game out of battle sequences were also real time with plenty of realistic performance drops for such an early build.

For a game a year or two out, that's perfectly reasonable.

So I edited and put together a gif out of the two Guard Scorpion scenes. No more confusion allowed :lol

So good.

Nicely done.
Thank you! I just assumed that people would think it's cool to have this trailer edited in such a way that makes sense :lol Guard Scorpion part seemed to confuse a few people (including Maximillian as he watched it live!).

Lol, Cait Sith in this battle system is going to be hilarious.

Cait Sith is not the one that will look funny. Think of Aerith, who attacks slowly with her staff. Can you imagine her attacking physically with this ultra-fast, super dynamic battle system?

Well, the framerate was pretty terrible, so I'm willing to bet all of that gameplay segments were entirely real-time and not target renders.

Yeah, this was one of the few times where I saw bad framerate, and it was actually encouraging. It meant to me that it was a work in progress, and they had a ways to go, but it was still potential gameplay, and not just fancy CGI that doesn't represent what it might look like. At least that's my hope.

Was too caught up in excitement to post earlier, but holy crap! Wasn't expecting them to show gameplay this early! Even if it's just the very beginning of the game, the fact that there's actual work done is absolutely mind-blowing to me. The new graphics, settings, and combat, everything about it is beautiful! This has me way more excited than even the CGI tease at E3 did!

So what year are we betting this comes out?

Late 2017. 2018 in a worst case scenario.

Do we know if this is running on the XV engine, or is it in Unreal like KHIII? And what happened to that rumour that Cyberconnect2 were involved, is that dead?

This certainly doesn't look like Luminous at all. It looks like Unreal 4.

We know it's definitely not running on Luminous. Other stuff are still rumors and not confirmed yet.

I like the remake version of cloud the best so far.

Remake Cloud is definitely my fave. (I wonder how many iterations the modelling team went through?) It's amazing that you can even see Nomura's trademark eye shape in the character model. The AC Cloud face never quite clicked for me as much, it's really interesting to see the differences.

Hmm well with Final Fantasy XV coming out next year, I'm guessing KH 2.8 is after that, and then hopefully Kingdom Hearts III afterwards, I'm guessing 2019 maybe. With Tetsuya Nomura working on 2.8 and Kingdom Hearts III, His plate is rather full til those two games come out. Though the trailer made it looked like the game is coming along quite well.

All I know, is chocobo racing better still be a thing, and I want to be able to command my chocobo to grab the jockey next to me and fling him off the track. Followed by a loud WARK WARK! As I pass the finish line taking 1st place.

My guesses for some of SE's near-future releases:

  • Star Ocean - March (known) - Late Spring/Summer in West
  • World of Final Fantasy - June
  • Nier - September
  • Kingdom hearts 2.8 - October
  • Dragon Quest XI - November
  • Final Fantasy XV - Holiday 2016
  • Kingdom Hearts III - Spring 2017 (March or May; potentially completed before then, but held off in order to ensure SE's 2016 lineup has breathing room)
  • Dissidia PS4 Version - Early Autumn 2017
  • FFVII - Holiday 2017 or later - no later than Holiday 2018

Same here, I thought the game was just starting development and we wouldn't see any gameplay until late next year or maybe even 2017, makes me wonder when did the development start then?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was in 2014 when Nomura was pulled off XV. Likely he had to choose between that, and the VII remake, and chose the VII remake.

Tifa boob jiggle or bust.
I expect multiple 40+ page NeoGAF threads to be made on this issue, with some of the most well researched and articulate discourse on the entire forum.

Yea, that list seems about right.

I didn't expect anything out of this game at PSX, let alone this. Looks amazing with an cool battle system. Also happy to hear about PC possibilities.

Straight up! He looks so damn good. He's obviously still got fair facial features, but I really like how he doesn't look like a stainless porcelain doll as he does in the other iterations. Reflects the environment he's in.

HA!

and the one and only self-deprecating pantsu expert miku will be the OP of them all.

Looks hype as shit. The combat system looks very much like Kingdom Hearts so I'm happy there. Looking forward to seeing more and the ability to play as other party members. I really hope they keep some of the more silly things in the game.

Isn't a staff more of a defensive weapon? I'm wondering if they will make the enemy AI behave differently depending on who is fighting them.

I still need to know how hands on Nomura is with this. Is the game really mostly made in Tokyo under his direction? Anything ever come from the rumours of CC2 involvement?

AFAIK Kingdom Hearts 2 (Final Mix) was the last game he did that and actually came out.

Now that people have pretty much established at this point whether they like or dislike the footage/battle system/gameplay... some follow up questions:

1. For those who are ok with a full-on remake, and them changing a lot, how much change would be too much for you? For example, hypothetically, if they just took certain towns out of the game or something. Like Kalm just wasn't in the game. Or maybe
Aeris dies at another location or in a totally different way
, or maybe they add some towns that weren't in the game at all. Say they remove or change certain bosses, and changed big chunks of the story. Would you be ok with that? Or do you draw the line eventually?

2. Do you still want materia in the game? How would you implement it?

3. For the towns and locations they do keep the same.... how closely do you want those to the originals? Do you want them just generally the same, or almost carbon copies, just with brand new graphics?

So I'm fairly ok with it being Turn based or action based. AND I think this looks nice. But to answer your questions-

1. This is completely subjective, but I think that as long as they hit the main story beats they will be fine. I am also fine with them adding in new story beats but would probably prefer them to be side additions that are in some ways optional.

Any changes I'd generally be fine with, including when/where/what part of the story characters do what or any potential character deaths or developments. In fact, a really effective way of having a remake of a story still be effective is in turning this stuff on its head.
So long as they don't do something as silly as have Cloud kill Aeris or anything ridiculous I wouldn't really care what they did

2. Materia I reckon you could still have there, I think as long as you keep levelling up materia, having different weapons have like materia combos and levelling/cloning/mixing materia then it doesn't really matter if it's action or RPG based. I do think it's probably the one 'deal breaker' gameplay move though is to have it in in some way. if they move to a bloody sphere grid or something it's just stupid.

3. Towns/levels I think are going to be the same in some parts (I would be shocked if they didn't try and make the opening sections be basically the same as what it was before, but in 3D) but everything else is open slather. Stay true to the feeling of the original places but go hog wild with everything else.
