Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

BTW I'll give the silly "Final Fantasy official app" some credit. I had kinda snoozed on PSX and forgot it was airing my Saturday morning.... but it did deliver a notification to me about the trailer before I woke up. That makes it valuable enough.

Oh, there's some cool ones, no doubt about that. Thing is most are either stuck in the 16 bit era or have art styles and/or mechanics I'm not really fond of. Right now, the only one that I'll always give the time of day to is Zeboyd. Any other games I'll give a look and try out, but I'll remain skeptical.

I will say that I'm very interested in some recent JRPG-style game Kickstarters that have visuals equivalent to PS2 era and up, but while what they promise is really cool, the possibility of them delivering on it seems pretty low.

I think you would love Darkest Dungeon, check it out.

Modern XCOM and Divinity OS deliver great turn base mechanic coupled with stellar production value of what people visioning from turn-based game with modern prod value, altho they not really have something like JRPG fan enjoy.

Back to topic, I still think if this remake play with a lot of micro management and you're not defense/evade like in normal action game its not actually too far for my liking. Less janky XII combat can be awesome.

The lines:

"Look... I don't care about your politics."

and

"You're doing this for the planet... same as us?"
"Not interested."

Those lines delivered on early FF7 Cloud's persona more than I could have hoped for.

did not expect gameplay

but seeing the similarities with FF15 makes it not that surprising in terms of development (adding the fact that FF7 already has a foundation)

Visually stunning.

But is it really a remake of FFVII if they turn the core gameplay into yet another kingdom hearts / FFXV style action rpg?

No.

They should have made it a spin off if they were going to change the fundamentals of the game so much.

I think as a fan, you should at least give it a chance.

Just checked Darkest Dungeon. Not really a fan of roguelikes. Looking for something with a more traditional level of progression. Also not crazy about the art style.

I like the combat in XCOM, but that's unfortunately all I like about them. Can't get into the art style, setting or plot. Sucks because it's a solid series. Also an SRPG, I actually don't feel are endangered at all and am satisfied with in terms of health.

Divinity OS I'll try one of these days, but I'm not a huge fan of the isometric view or the art. I know, I'm really picky :/

Watching the trailer again and suddenly wondering how the hell that sword ever stuck to his back.

Magnets?

Did they mention the engine yet? Looks like UE to me.

No mentions yet but all signs point to UE4.

I wonder if that talk about it being co developed with external studio are true as well because this seems to be coming together a lot quicker then your typical Square game.

Or ya know... maybe what they showed in the trailer is literally everything they got. LOL.

holy shit, can't wait to see Tifa

Can't wait to see the whole cast

Oh man, I read this as 'can't wait to see her whole chest'.

Anybody compare the Remake model to the one in Smash or Dissdia? Only saw comparisons to Advent Children and PS3 trailer.

I think cloud looks more gaunt and wolfish in this trailer, which fits his whole mercenary for hire schtick a lot better. Admittedly, I didn't take to it at first sight - my first impression was of those Russian street punks who shoot themselves up on Krokodil

To be fair, getting what they've got in the trailer would mean that they have most likely their entire asset pipeline already in, along with most of their other core engine features and technologies. The combat segments showed some fairly complex animation and physics behaviors that, while probably still needing optimization, speak well to the major features already being in place.

Granted, for an RPG that still leaves a lot of work to do be done, but it's still a pretty great place to be in, development-wise.

I was impressed. In my mind after the reveal trailer, they had gotten Visual Works to make a few CGI scenes in order to pitch the game. They're further along than I hoped.

Though remaking FFVII is a huge task... at least the scope of the game is controlled beforehand.

Source? I missed this. I thought it was Luminous only?

FFVII Remake:

GC 2015: Final Fantasy VII Remake won’t run on Luminous Engine

FFXV:

Not official source unfortunately, but I had a conversation with another developer. (sry for the wrong english)

Me: As i know, FFXV use Luminous Engine.

Dev:
No. The FFXV use hybrid engine (LE-UE4). The Square is licensed the UE4, because the Luminous is not working. They tried, but it is not working. The used parts must be included into the UE4. They have a license, which fully edited, altered. Of course, therefore, pay a lot more than others, but this is also an option at the Epic.

I pretty much assume Luminous is out, UE4 is in, unless proven otherwise.

So it's a real remake, nice. I came in here expecting the kind of hd remaster we are always served, but that's actually a remake! Looks very nice, they're keeping the ATB system from the newer FF, maybe witth others features. This is exciting.

I'm guessing the answer will be "yes" but having never played FFVII, should I get the original on PS3? I'm not necessarily going to be playing the remake.

I like how FFVII remake completely overshadows FFXV now. Who even cares and as excited for the latter after this.
Your bias against FFXV is pretty clear now. Also FFXV is coming out in 2016, what about FFVII: Remake? It won't be out until 2018 at the earliest. So yeh, plenty of people will care about a game that they can actually play next year, and when they will reveal the date + trailer in the March event.

I will never understand this logic among FF fans who are divided on the different games in the series. Why not just be happy that we are getting so many different FFs instead of pitting one game against the other.

So they've got the guy who plays Jet in Cowboy Bebop doing Barrett's voice. Should be good. :)
latest

This might really be the greatest.

Yeah, "lame tortured Cloud" gimme a break:

I don't see it.
Fangirl material still going strong.

Heh, yes! (If you're planning on getting a PS4 in the future, I'd actually wait to play the FFVII PC version on PS4 - the toggle x3 speed up is a godsend for random battles. I don't know if the speed can be changed in the vanilla PC version, though there's probably a mod for it.)

You should get the original on PS4 if you have it. Looks better, has trophies, and you can record videos and take screenshots. Plus it comes with a few cheats, such as the x3 speed which is amazing.

Hmm from what we know SE is still using Luminous Engine for FFXV

Why does Barrett wear sunglasses

Barrett it is dark how can you see

I'm going to take a wild guess and say they couldn't get his eyes right in time for this release. Will he keep them on for the entire game? I don't know. I also don't care if he does or doesn't, he's still a badass either way.

Exactly my thoughts. FFVII is my favorite game. No matter how pretty this dumbed down version looks, I'm worried that playing it could ruin FFVII for me. I actually might skip it and only watch my favorite summons on youtube.
'Dumbed down version'? Fucking really?
How about waiting to see how the game actually is before making stupid comments like this?

Lol when is the last time squenix made a good FF game or just a good JRPG in general? Sorry, some of us know better than to get too excited. I mean fucking OP said he/she was shaking. What the fuck?! That's weird as hell.

I don't think that giving it a chance is unreasonable. Sqaure Enix had some management changes over the years and maybe this game will be good. There is no guarantee of course, but writing it off entirely seems unfair.

"Prior to its rebranding and full move onto eight-generation consoles, Final Fantasy XV (then called Final Fantasy Versus XIII), used lighting technology from Luminous along with a purpose-built proprietary gameplay engine."

Interesting... Because both games looks very similar

I'm not writing it off entirely personally. I can't speak for anyone else. People are gonna have to make the decision depending on how this turns out. If its even just decent I will probably skip it. If impressions are really good I will pick it up. I'm still very fond of of the PS1 FF games and I don't want to tarnish that at all.

Maybe it's a mark of sorrow he's still wearing them until he met his brother in arm at the Golden Saucer jail.

I still prefer his AC look as a black dude but I can understand why people love his former face plus the Weasley Snipe feel.

They've have been constantly showing some tech demos of XV mentioning that's it's running on the Luminous Engine but I don't know. If what you're saying is true then LE is even a bigger failure than Crystal Tools lol.

Ultra super late to the party: Square, it's been 15 years but... I'm your bitch again. Don't let me down this time T_T

I think that is indeed the takeaway.

More that dedicated multipurpose cross-discipline game dev engines have eclipsed publisher-specific vanity engines.

The idea that a publisher must create their own game engine is becoming as of archaic of an idea as a film studio having to develop their own camera to shoot a film.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason Nomura was allowed to make this game was if he used UE4 instead of trying to make another engine that just didn't pan out.

RIP Crystal Tools and Luminous
