That’s according to a report by the Financial Times (paywall), which claims the Square Enix executive stated that the improved streaming speeds would “herald the long-term demise of the dedicated games console” as a primary medium for gaming.

“Once 5G becomes the global standard, there will definitely come a time when we can transfer images to any device,” Yoshida is quoted as saying.

“Players can enjoy a high-quality gaming experience on any device by not being tied to a gaming hardware or TV monitor. We’re definitely heading in that direction, and I don’t think coronavirus will slow this shift,” he added.

“With home consoles, you need to sit in front of the television . . . and turn on the power and wait for the hardware to start up, so it was a time-consuming entertainment,” Yoshida said. “With stay at home, there were more opportunities to turn the switch on.”

Won't stop 5G providers from over provisioning their towers 200%, 300%, etc. 4G was always marketed as an option for 100Mbps. You know what I get in Las Vegas? 0.75 near city edge and 10Mbps on the strip with my cell phone with full bars and LTE. 5G will go the same route because ISP are greedy jackasses.

I can see where he might have this idea from a Japanese perspective. They have already moved onto majority mobile gaming, and they generally have much faster mobile speeds than we do here in the USA. Our internet connections are all over the place speedwise in the US, and not even one of our mobile companies have true nationwide coverage with any kind of speed.

This also reminded me that one of the countries with extremely high uptake in the XCloud beta was South Korea, which is also a country with excellent mobile speeds and a place where a majority of gaming is done on mobile devices

Well, yes. He's correct that this would do so when it's the global standard that a majority would move to that, but that's a ways off. Seems more he's indicating it'll become another major option than anything else though. Asia is different from NA and its own beast in terms of speeds and infrastructure, as well so it makes sense.

Workplaces have wifi, as well as shops, libraries, public places and pretty much everywhere that is needed. Is the 20-30 minutes we spend in public transport that life-changing with faster mobile internet?

The end game of 5G is replacing every signal, bluetooth, wifi, even IR. When the entire US infrastructure is dependent on 5G for vehicle to vehicle communication to finally achieve full autonomous cars, freaking videogames will be the least complicated use of the technology.

Quite a bit since it helps keep latency very low and increase availability. It's all back-end but the difference would be big. Not to mention, 5G has importance in a more broad sense than just gaming. I don't know what's this about 20-30 minutes considering that would assume everyone spends that amount of time out in public or in transport. Even then, the current shift to mobile gaming has already shown a change in how people play and they would be adapting to that as always.

with 5G that allow better streaming, smartphone's technical limitation like thermal and specification could be alleviated. no more low quality mobile phone games. we can play AAA quality visuals anywhere as long has good internet connection. its gonna become norm. more people can have access to console/pc quality games.

but console and pc gaming wont go anywhere. there still dedicated consumers for that. there is people who prefer to play with big screen on couch. for multiplayer game, sure we can play anywhere but for me, i rather enjoy hours of game with great storyline and music at bigger screen with better environment/less crowded people...like at home.

Ummm, bandwidth, speed, latency? All are pretty important for game streaming, and 4G has average bandwidth (tops out at 100 megabits per second) and decently high latency. 5g bandwidth tops out at 10 gigabits, or 100 times the bandwidth. Latency is also much lower. Of course this is assuming cell companies take advantage of it. I can see places like Japan, South Korea, or even Singapore taking full advantage whole we get super hot or miss experiencs here in the US

It existing is irrelevant, until you actually have a world wide set up where EVERYONE actually has that, I simply don't see some world where consoles just go away. PS Now exist RIGNT NOW, how come we still have consoles? We literally still have CDs....... Spotify, Youtube, Apple etc couldn't even kill that shit. So I believe the distrust consumers have with publishers....the greed publishers clearly have and the greed ISP's have will greatly dictate this and we will likely continue to see hardware solely was a bullet point to win.

yes i think they is a good amount of the current global console audience especially on the more popular products that doesn't really care about console themselves but play there because it's the easiest and most popular way to play games for now.
but at the same time without them it will remain more than enough people spending good amount of money there
