Rewind over 6 years ago, when a teenage Thaedolus (or perhaps then "The Outlaw Torn") was obsessed with everything Final Fantasy. RPG's were the bomb, casual gamers didn't understand and Squaresoft was a diety among developers. Of course I played Final Fantasy II and III on my SNES and FFVII on my PSX, but imagine my surprise when I finally discovered why the numbering system was so screwed up, and I'd been screwed out of a SNES Final Fantasy.

I immediately looked into finding out how I, an English-only youngin, could play this missing link between FFIV and FFVI. I finally found out about a group that was translating it for people like me, and downloaded the most completely translated ROM there was. Unfortunately, a combination of bad emulation, a crappy computer and poor tranlsation led me to give up on FFV. Many years passed, my tastes in games changed and I forgot all about FFV, until now.

For some reason I got the urge to play FFV over this three day weekend. So I went ahead and found a translated version, booted it up and got playing yesterday. 5 hours later, I thought maybe there was something to this game. 5 more hours of FFV today and now I'm convinced: this game absolutely rocks.

Why oh why didn't I play it before? I swear I heard bad things about it, I heard it was too hard or something. In fact, I find iit fairly easy, almost to a fault, and the battle system is the coolest thing I've ever seen. The jobs are simply awesome. I love being able to customize my characters and level them up in different, specific areas.
I recently got to the new world, and man I just want to keep playing
The only reason I stopped was because I've essentially been playing FFV since I woke up. I haven't spent this much time playing a game, let alone Final Fantasy, since I was in Jr. High.

So the point of the thread is: all you FF and RPG fans who never gave FFV a chance, go get it! If you got something against ROMs, go buy the inferior PSX version! This game is simply awesome, much better than FFIV and perhaps on par with FFVI!

Wow, I didn't even see that other FF thread on the main page. What poor timing on my part :)

what's wrong with the PS1 version?

Shitty translation (instead of rewriting the game from scratch from the original preproduction script like Dawn of Souls/Origins FF II, they just used the original Engrishy "FF Extreme" script with no changes, so you get stuff like "Princess Salsa" and "Y Burn") and load times are the main problems

FF5 was like crack to me. That job system just kicks ass. By the end, every one of my charcters had every job mastered.

Awesome game. I should really play it again.

I first played through FF5 after going through 7 in early 1997..was a really fun game with the job system and all that. I firmly believe one of the biggest reasons I like FF Tactics so much is because I played that right after going through 5, so I just had a job system blast.

5 years ago the thread topic could have meant 5, but I also agree that 3 is the 'lost' FF game (but not for too much longer).

Did anyone else import the JP version (on the PS1) by itself? I wonder because on the side/spine of mine, it says FANAL FANTASY V on it.

This game has been on my backlog list for a while, and you just inspired me to move it up a few slots. I have attempted to play through it once, and got a few hours in, but I remember being sort of bored for some reason. I also remember thinking the graphics were bland compared to IV. But I'm gonna give it another shot.

FF5 is an amazing game. It's also the last game that showed Sakaguchi's mad game designing skillz (it was the last FF game he directed). A big part of FF died when FF6 came out and the plot was no longer about the crystals.

However like someone else said, FF3 is the true lost FF game, and I can't wait until it comes out here. Hopefully they will beef it up with extras and modernize it like they have with FF1&2.

EVEN mimic??

FFV was great, but I couldn't beat the last boss.

I played through about 1/3 of it (from what I can tell), and I really liked it. That was a long time ago, though; I'm not sure why I stopped.

Btw, FFV's soundtrack is one of my favorites. Uematsu did an excellent job with it.

Yeah that's another thing, I never really appreciated the few bits of the soundtrack I had heard. Now that I've played through much of the game, I went ahead and got the piano collections and Dear Friends...man this stuff is really good. At least as good as FFIV's
