Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

Aaaaaaand cue the internet overreacting. We have literally no clue what that sentence actually means for how the game will be delivered. Its a long ways off. Im going to wait to see what they actually mean before I get pissy.

How else could

"told across a multi-part series"

be interpreted though? At the very least the game isn't going to all be released at once, and that's more than enough to justify people's concerns here.

Why can't they understand that all people want is a remake of the original game? They just had to go and fuck it up.

Just when I started thinking that this company has gotten back in touch with the fans...

Damn...what??? Not good news at all, even though it does make sense.

FF7R has disaster written all over it. I hope it all works out in the end but I'm not holding out hope.

it's painful to see people mentally size up where they're going to put breaks in the original game.

this will be nothing like the sprawling, continuous universe connected by an overworld that you want. it'll be a cinematic, piecemeal experience with only a narrative continuity between each section.

by doing this, they can make a lot more money from nostalgia junkies for a magnitude less effort.
I'm not going to be paying hundreds to play the complete story. The game may be hugs and expensive to make so I'd rather not say much until we get a solid breakdown.

OK I don't care ENORMOUSLY about the fact that it's episodic. But what's terrifying is the the clear implication that this game can no longer have meaningful location-to-location traversal; everything will have to be a set sequence of events. No world to explore. And that, is a huge, huge game changer.

This really drives home the point that modern game development can not accommodate the scope of past generations. Shit sucks.

It's not fair trying to equate game development back then and now. There's a lot of visual fidelity and cutscene creation that hampers how a game gets created now compared to decades ago. Especially in an RPG.

I look forward to Episode 12 the most, where Cloud had a mental breakdown and lives as a vegetable on a wheelchair.

"Play it First on PS4" makes sense now...

Probably complete edition will be out on all platforms at the same time.
There goes a system seller.

You should get Opiate's tag. Realest post in the thread.

Explain the Witcher or Fallout or Skyrim or GTA or AssCreed. High budget has been doing open world non stop.

- credits of part 1 will roll after shinra building (would fit pretty perfectly honestly)
- there will be no world exploration
- each part will be the next major location (or two) in the story (every 5-6 hours of the original)

Seriously... recreating the first 6 hours of this game the way they are will be a AAA effort in itself...

Sony isn't making the game, Square-Enix is. The decisions they make lie solely with them.
Yah, not sure why i typed Sony... heat of the moment i guess.

Valve announces episodic series to end critically acclaimed game arc. Third and final entry never releases and never spoken of again.

Frequently requested remake of classic RPG announced 18 years after the original. Will be released episodically.

I was honestly just thinking "what if they stop making episodes?"

People will be more pissed than EVER

Worked for Half Life.

Half Life 2 episodes were announced after the fact. Half Life 2 was still a complete game with a proper beginning, middle, and end. In fact the ending to Half Life 2 was less of a cliffhanger than the ending to the second episode.

Episode 1 had mixed responses. Episode 2 had a good fan response but thats partly because it came packaged with other games and partly because people were not expecting it to be the last half life game they would play for a decade.

It's not a big deal to me. Why?

Because I can either play it as soon as they release the first part in the next couple of years, or I can wait 6+ years to play the whole thing. I'll go with the former since I have a choice.

Honestly though if each "multi-part" piece was just a disc of the original game it wouldn't be so bad. Still not good news, but that's the only way I'll be OK with this.

How to remake a beloved PS1 JRPG in 2015:

Step 1. Recreate all the fan favorite moments using a stunning graphics engine
Step 2. Cut the turn based combat system, overworld, sidequests, exploration, Etc
Step 3. Sell it as episodes.
Step 4. ????
Step 5. PROFIT!

"with each entry providing its own unique experience."

This could effectively allow them to omit sections of the original FFVII experience. Not good news guys.

I can see it now. Text based written story to fill in the player on what happened between episodes.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. They'll just cover major story bits and either ignore the rest or toss it in as a few lines of text. My goodness, the industry is pretty simple these days. 99% of the time a discrete, complete product on a disc is better than all this episodic, piecemeal junk designed solely to extract more money from you.

Leave it to SE absolutely fuck up something so simple.

Nobody should ever react to anything unless they have all the facts.
But how do you know if you have all of the facts? Better keep waiting.
It's safer to just not react to anything at all. There might be more facts you don't have.
I have no issue with people talking about it, but you have hyperbole like "ugh it's gonna be $60 for 1/3 a game" and "I'm out, greedy companies $$$" when the quote in no way says that.

How do you construct an overworld in an episodic game? Genuine question.

The original game doesn't really let you go to places you're not meant to get to until later in the story already. By the time you have the airship you've already been to pretty much the whole map, to my recollection.

They might have to pull the occasional "hey Cloud we don't have any reason to be here so why don't you just turn around and go to where we do need to go," but that's easy enough to handle.

Even if they do that, it's not like they're going to complete the entire world and include the whole thing in every episode. This game is going to be one giant hallway. Besides, the original was only split into three discs because of the CG. The third episode would be a rip-off if they did it that way.
It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be a hallway. If this is actually episodic, then it could mean that they'll, say, make Midgar a lot bigger so that it's much more explorable, unlike the original Midgar which is just a linear, cinematic setting that you never really see past the paths they push you on. Other cities could also be expanded and they could make areas surrounding those cities explorable.

It could be a more linear experience, but it could also mean they just divide FFVII's world into smaller parts that still offer big areas to explore.

I should have known they were going to milk this for all the money they could lol
"First on Playstation" indeed, when will the rest of us ever get to play :(

Well, at least I still have REmake 2 to look forward to (for now).

If Capcom doesn't find a way to fuck it up. They just need to look at what they did for REmake on GameCube and say "Let's do that for the current gen." REmake 2 should be for the longtime fans and respect that and not go all in with people who just got into Resident Evil with 5 & 6.

For what it's worth, I just finished the forgotten city on the ps4 port and where the first disc would've ended it said "end of part 1." If we can get all of part one by the end of 2017, that would be awesome.

This suggests to me that they're going to be cutting A LOT of content from the original. Only thing that makes sense given this news.

If it was designed to be episodic, does that mean the major locations are all completely separated and there is no way to travel freely between them seamlessly?

This is not what I wanted it to be like..

I think we're panicking a little bit early, the fact is we just don't know how it's going to be structered. We'll just have to wait and see.

Too late, everyone here are ready to assume the game will have the world map removed, materia removed, summons as microtransaction, and the game costing 200+ dollars to play.

I can understand being upset by the episodic stuff but holy shit this thread.

Some serious outrage and hilarious jumps to conclusion.

"Only the best parts are going to be remade!"
"NO MATERIA WTF"
"Hello linear walkthroughs."

Like are you guys thinking straight?

I just see this as separating it across like three(?) parts and releasing them off in sections.

It's a way to get the game out faster, and if they can do it without ruining the experience, so be it.

We literally know nothing about this, so let's share the "here you go muthafukaz" and "wow so ff7 remaster is the only good one ffs" rage until we get one actual word on how this is handled.

Obv it would be the best if everything was there in one go, but we simply don't know yet.

My hype went from 11 to 0. I've played through VII about 20 times from beginning to end. And I am surely overreacting. I must be...

But seriously, what worries me the most is how they are going to tackle the freedom of the game. Once you were out of midgar, or once you got Tony Bronco and Highwind you could explore, go to a dozen places, find places like Wutai, grab Vincent to your party.

How are they going to offer all this in episodes? There's no way how!!!
This structure may well be very limiting in terms of scope.
Dude... Not like this.
