Final Fantasy VIII was released 26 years ago today, on February 11, 1999! Does the Final Fantasy franchise still hold a special place for you?

Still one of my faves.

SNES/PSOne/PS2 hold a special place. XIII sucked. XV has major flaws but I think it's fine. XVI is boring. XIV is online.

It's a poorly managed franchise. The ideas aren't even bad, seriously, XV being a lads trip is such a good idea and I will never understand why crazies like ResetEra hate on it, but the devs fumble it so much since XIII. But, funny enough, XIII-2 is probably the one that is genuinely felt the most complete and fun to experience as a total package only marred by being connected to crappy Lightning.

Back to VIII, I want to replay it soon.

FF still occupies a special place in my heart.

7, 8, 10 were just mind-blowing in their time for their scope and ambition.

Yes I'm excluding 9 because thematically it was a throw-back to trad high fantasy which being honest, I'm really not a fan of.

8 I particularly feel a fondness for because, ironically it didn't really click for me on first playthrough. After Sephiroth being such a standout in FF7, I was taken aback by the lack of an obvious villain, and the whole plot felt oddly episodic. But on replay I started to notice a bunch of little details that fleshed out what the game was trying to portray, everything clicked into place and it became top 3 for me of the entire Playstation 1 era.

It also has in my opinion probably the best soundtrack of all time. The use of leitmotif throughout is brilliant, and its just rammed with great tunes.

It has to be said that FF as a franchise has somewhat fallen from grace since XII though; there've been flashes of it former glory but I'm still waiting for that proper return to form.

Not that it really matters, the memories I have of finishing all these games in the small hours of the morning because *I had to see how the story ended!* are indelibly etched in my mind. Great experiences, amongst the very best times I've had with videogames.

the series was a big part of my childhood, 9 is my favourite. FF10 for me was the last "real" final fantasy, lost interest after that. Dabbled in the mmo but didnt like it, i enjoyed 15 for what it was and played ff7remake, it was ok. But yeh, i think the ff name has fallen off a bit since the glory days.

Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec... We were all riveted by that introduction. FFVIII may have been controversial, but it also brought a lot of new fans to the saga. It integrated FMVs into pre-rendered backgrounds and made a bunch of pixels the "best looking guy".

Whatever, you say? That's what the new generation, less stimulated by this license, might say. We don't yet know FFXVI's sales figures, but we're already a long way from the ten million mark. For a budget higher than Red Dead Redemption 2, that's saying a lot.

Perhaps the series needs to get back to its roots, and perhaps it needs to abandon its numbering (Yoshida sketched out the idea in an interview).

Final Fantasy, old-fashioned or still relevant?
My favorite ff of all times lol also great music. Wish we could see a remake with story update. Maybe even a prequel? I didn't think the characters were bad either.

So, Final Fantasy is an all time franchise. BUT…it has hit some hard times.

FFXIV is its own thing, and should be judged separately, as should the spinoff games.

Again, though…but…FF thru FFVI there were a few bangers and a few misses. FFVII thru FFXII, they were mostly hits.

FFXIII is a mixed bag. FFXV is "so-so", and i haven't tried FFXVI, but it seems to hit like FFXV by reputation.

FF needs a "win" again. Maybe they should try to simplify like Octopath, i am not sure.
I do think a smaller scale adventure and story would be wise.

Maybe a 20ish hour story, with some sort of killer endgame that goes on.

The worst FF game afaic.

The problem with modern FF games is that SE tries to chase trends to appeal to the younger generation of gamers but it hasn't really ever paid off for them, and they alienate the older fans in the process. I feel like they finally got their groove back with Rebirth, we'll have to wait and see if they learned from it or not.

Will always be my favourite Final Fantasy game. I replay it quite regularly and always brings back great memories from when I played it for the first time when it released and I was in High School. I always get this happy and peaceful feeling when I roam around Balamb Garden and listen to Balamb Garden theme. Something about it always makes me feel happy
