-The user interface will be increased in scale by approximately 20% to compensate for small characters on some HDTV displays. Standard TV displays will not be affected

I might be able to actually play this in 720p or 180i instead of having to switch to 480p. :)

I had been asked by a couple of people if you would be able to continue your beta character in the 360 retial version. I guess there still is no clear answer but it looks unlikely. I wonder if my character from the PC version still exists?

If you've not played in the past few months than your account was deleted in December. I tried to get my old account back and was told they deleted a crap load of them in Dec. The only ones they didnt were ones that had just recently not been active which is like 2 months by they're clock.

Great news on this beta stuff. I want more high res textures to be honest. I'm gonna install it later tonight.

a while back when I decided to give it another go on PC, I think it had been 4-5+ months since I had cancelled my character but was still able to retrieve it. then again they were sending out emails pretty much begging people to come back and use their old character.

Can't enjoy FFXI after WoW. I tried it again on the 360 and after an extremely frustrating installation process, I couldn't read the text! This should at least make it playable. I had to get right up to the HDTV.

while the fix for that hasnt been implemented just yet, you can switch the display mode on your 360 to 480p and it makes the text bigger but when you have all the user interface and chat logged displays up it leaves not as much room for the world to be displayed. Im playing it right now and am having no problems except for dying constantly. :(

Edit: wow just after I posted this I almost died again. had to call for help at the last second as another player ran next to me. he stopped, voked and helped me finish him off with only 2 HP left on me.

Actually, the developers said in Famitsu there is a good chance beta players will be able to carry their chars to the final version. In the original beta back in 2002, lots of things changed, so they couldn't carry the char data, but allowed players to keep their name and race. The 360 beta is so close to the final game that there would be no issues with carrying the characters to a final server. At least, that's what Tanaka and co. say.

just got back into this again today (I stopped playing obviously when my 360 was busted, and hadnt picked it back up since I got it back). The game is getting more fun, but some stuff is starting to piss me off.

1) I dont like the auction houses. I wish you could just see the listed price of everything and buy one. What if I want to sell below market price to get money quickly? No one would know Im selling under market unless they bid way under the typical asking price.

2) Graphics are fugly. I know its an old game, but FSAA, V-Sync, no draw in, better draw distance for characthers should be done for the 360. I dont care about ugly textures (I do, but I understand not redoing them)... the game has major shimmering and is just generally ugly. Even the bad 360 games manage to look like hi-res current gen games, this one just looks like an ugly current gen game.

I don't understand the graphic complaints about FFXI. Sure I've never played the game, but looking at the hundreds of screenshots Square releases on a monthly basis the game seems like the most gorgeous MMORPG ever made. Why does the gameplay not look as good as all those amazing screens?

it does look pretty good in stills, but in motion when things get busy it really suffers.

Comparisons vs WoW running on a decent system aren't pretty though.

the art is fantastic, the charachters look pretty good. Everything looks very muddy though... plus some of the stuff (iffy frame rate, really bad screen tearing) wont show up in stills.

The Auction House is geared so that those sellers who are way under market price have their items sell first. So if you're way under market and no one else is selling for lower than you, you'll be the first of that item sold regardless of bid price.

This is part of what has screwed up the economies for crafters on some servers, because people who are levelling their crafts as quickly as possible (and possibly with purchased instead of earned gil) are dumping their crafted items at a super low price to get rid of them as fast as possible.

Therefore, if you want to sell your item quickly on AH, just price it low. As long as there is demand, you will sell (relatively - depends on the item) quickly.

I know this is somewhat /damage control, but you're basing frame rate issues and screen tearing on a beta version.

Textures I'm sure won't really get an upgrade, but these other two issues should be fixed for the retail release. If not, well, that's a bigger issue at that point...

Please, please, please limit how much you undercut prices on AH.

A few Gil (1-9) under the AH History will often times be enough to sell first, or at the very least, ensure a much shorter line than usual. You don't need to price things hundreds, thousands, or hundreds of thousands of Gil less to ensure that your item will sell first. In fact, the only thing that will likely do is bend over everybody else that has the item listed, as there's a good chance that the new, lower price will stick. And if it does, it may take hours, days, or even weeks for the original price to return, and by then...? Everybody else will have already had to eat their listing fees, with absolutely nothing to show for it.

So, please, don't be one of the assholes that drastically undercuts the AH History, as it's not necessary to do so, and the only thing it really accomplishes is that it pisses a lot of people off. :P

From what I've heard, the beta version for 360 still suffers from the choppy framerate of the ps2 and pc version -- can someone verify that?

I don't understand why they wouldn't try to improve it even moderately. The game is very fun, but the performance is just embarassing :(.

Could someone help this newbie out.

I am creating a character and when i name it, it tells me "name is invalid"
it doesnt matter name i choose. it could be a stupid name consisting of just random letters.

Also do i put something in the world tab?

like i said i am a total noob to all this MMORPG stuff :(

Are you on the 360 version? POL posted a news item on Feb.5 saying they are having character creation problems on that server, due to "population growth".

Huh? I've been playing 720p all the time. Aren't people having issue with text are the ones running on standard tv?

Nutter, when you're able to create a character, go ahead and just post your character name here if you want help. I'm not in the 360 beta, but I can still add you to my Friends List so you can message me while playing if you ever have any questions. :)

Nope!

In the retail release, there are things called "World Passes," and they're little passwords that your friends in-game can purchase and give to you. What they do is ensure that you end up on whatever server the password was puchased for (for instance, if I bought you one, it'd lead you to my server: "Fairy"). Without a World Pass, you'd be randomly placed on any one of the servers, so you'll need one for the retail release if you want to end up on a server with your friends, on "Fairy" with a lot of the GAF players, or whatever the case may be.

However, in the Xbox 360 beta, there is only the one server: "Hydra." Everybody automatically gets placed on this, so there's no need to worry about it at all here.

I've heard that playing this game on Xbox360 is akin to stabbing yourself repeatedly in the eyes with a Swiss Army Knife. Any truth to that?

It depends on your screen size. I sit approx. 6.5 feet away from my screen and on my 34XBR Widescreen Sony running in 720p or 1080i I had a hard time reading the text. Adjusting the backround color helped, but still it was too small. I recently upgraded my screen to Sony's 50" SXRD and the text is perfect of course because I am at the same seating distance but now on a 50".

The 20% fix will mainly fix it for all those players that have a smaller HDTV...it is not an issue for SDTV or those playing in 480p. Even on my 50" it would be a bit better having it 20% larger. I hope there is a choice in the menu to choose the size.

no people with HD displays are having the problems. I have a 30" Samsung HD CRT and I play all my games with the 360 set to 1080i and they all look great. when I popped FFXI in the text was so small and hard to read it would have made it impossible to enjoy the game for a long period of time.

someone told me to try switching the 360 display to 480p and sure enough that made the text huge compared to the other display. like i said before the only bad part about that solution is everything about the interface is bigger so theres less room for the world to be displayed and it looks cluttered.

Oh, I agree completely. It is a beta, but its a problem right now so Im going to complain about it. :lol

Hopefully it is just a beta issue. Perhaps they did a quick and dirty port just to make sure the net code was working and everything was compatible with the 360. Who knows.

Also, Im going to need a pass to Fairy with the GAFers when this thing goes live.

I sure don't have any problem playing it in 720p and nor are my friends. Maybe it's just 1080i... I'd have to test it.

Even on the 360, the image quality is on-par with FFX for the PS2. Compared to WoW on my PC it's just nasty. They don't even do mipmapping and texture filtering properly :( (seriously, in 720p, you can clearly see that after the first mip-level, everything is fucking point-filtered...). The art is fantastic (character designs, armour designs, zone designs, etc), but the horrendous image quality really lets it down, especially in motion. Also, as other people have mentioned, currently the frame rate leaves a lot to be desired, and it has some nasty screen tearing at times.

It was literally unplayable on my 26" lcd (don't have the money of space for anything bigger) in 720p if i wanted to play from the couch.

I dont know why people play their games at 1080i when it is not as good as 720p if im correct. I am playing the game at 720p on a 26" Samsung LCD and it looks great on normal 360 games but this game looks proper dated!!! I need to get back into it but I aint gonna pay out 9.99 a month for this game tbh.

The text was also tiny at 720p, not just 1080i. So this is good news for every HDTV owner.

Anyone had a problem with Content ID?

Looks like I don't have one from the get go and when I want to purchase one but it won't let me login(at the 'purchase Content ID store').

EDIT: Of course, a simple error by my hand. I wrote one of the letters in my Playonline login name wrong. Now it works.

I was just on about playing the game at 1080i in general. The text is tiny I was hoping that I would be able to play the game in my bed (3 metres from the screen) but as it turns out I can't due to the text being tiny, I wonder if this an issue they will rectify in the full version although I doubt it.

did you try switching your 360 display setting to 480p then playing the game? Ive been doing that specifically for this game and it doesnt take but a few seconds and it makes the text perfectly readable. even after the patch I cant play the game at the higher resolutions because my display is too small.
