Angsty kid gets caught up in something bigger than he could imagine...love somewhere in there...bad guy with ridiculous hair...plot twist (or 2)...meaning of stuff...end of the game.ant1532 said:does anyone know the story of the game? i dont understand, theres some kind of war or something, and some girl is gettiong married... demo was aweomse, but whats the story about?
Unless they completely replace the battle system, and "OMG stay out of that enemy's line of sight" Metal-Gear-esque radar, I'm not going to enjoy it all that much.Thaedolus said:Man this game better live up to the hype after so long...

duckroll said:Ok I'm going to summarize what we DO know from all the articles and previews so far. Putting it in spoiler text in case some people want a complete blackout plot-wise.
In the world of Ivalice, there is a tiny country named Dalmasca that lies strategically between the conquering Archadian Empire and the Kingdom of Rosalia. The king of Dalmasca arranges a marriage between his only dauhter, the Princess Ashe, and a young man he sees fit to lead his kingdom in future. Unfortunately, as the Archadian warpath against Rosalia heats up, the king secretly sells out his country to the Empire hoping to save as many lives as possible. One of his lead generals, discovers this, rebels amid the chaos and slays the king before he is captured by the invaders and imprisoned as a traitor and shamed before his own people.
Three years after the invasion, Dalmasca is firmly in the arms of the Archadian Empire and Ashe is leading an underground rebel crew in hopes of retaking her kingdom from Archadian rule. Vaan is a young man who grew up in the poorer market sectors of Dalmasca with his friend Penelo, he dreams of being a sky pirate one day and escaping the confines of his rotting home country.
One fateful day, Vaan is arrested for theft/fraud while running one of his usual illegal jobs in the city and is thrown in prison. There he meets the sky pirate Balthier who, along with his assistant Fran will help him escape.
From then on the information on the story is vague (for good reason) but we do know that Vaan meets Ashe somewhere between his imprisonment and escape and that later on the party discovers that the Judges that rule the Archadian Empire are seeking out Crystals as a natural energy source to power their weapons and technology (and probably more). As they encounter the crystals mines they will also discover the Broken Crystals which can be used to bind a contract with a higher being to summon them in times of aid. Ashe is determined to use this as a means to reclaim her kingdom.
There's a shitload of stuff I'm skipping because they REALLY border on being real spoilers, so yeah, the plot is at least as complex, dark and deep as FFT and Vagrant Story.

Ant, what benefits are derived from moving around in battle? Does distance play into damage or anything like that? I've played the demo a little, but I didn't seem to notice anything.
ant1532 said:you didnt get to a boss fight did you.
ant1532 said:how is that any different from other FF???
ant1532 said:If anything it adds since now you can move during a fight. Everything else is the same
Reilly said:I did.
Reilly said:because I never pressed X once in the older FF games.
Reilly said:Moving does nothing. You can't dodge attacks or anything so it's pretty much pointless.

Y2Kevbug11 said:In some ways, I agree. I certainly won't miss random encounters (Chrono Cross and FF12 have it right), but I will be nostalgic for some turn based battles. I did like FF12 when I played the demo and I really thought it was a faster game and it was more refreshing.
I play FF for the story anyway, not the mechanics. The mechanics are better, though. I am really, really hyped for this game.
Die Squirrel Die said:I don't mind random battles, it's more the whole going to a separate battle screen thing that annoys me.
I've never understood why rpgs with random battles don't let players set the encounter rate. It's not really about difficulty, especially with the save points that also heal you totally. It's more about the player choosing to prioritise certain parts of the game at different times. When I'm exploring, particularly retracing my steps through an area where the enemies are pathetically weak I want minimal to no encounters. When I want to level up then I want encounters so frequent that they pratically come one after the other.
