Haven't played FFXI in years, about to give this a shot. Looks gorgeous from all these screens.

The PS3 looks pretty good, not sure what others are looking at, sure it isn't my ultra capable PC, but it didn't cost me 2800 either. It's more than sufficient..

A decent computer is no where near $2,800. Game does look good on PS3 though.

Hey Gaf, So I have a FFXIII NA copy with the registration code, but I want to join the EU beta.

So what are my choices?

I already have an S-E EU account btw

1. Unlock all the aetheryte crystals around the city, makes traveling faster.
2. Quests may be mundane at the start but they give good chunk of XP.
3. Items and gears have their own separate inventory spaces, the latter is called armoury chest.
4. Make sure you do your class quests every 5 levels, at 5 it unlocks hunting log (more easy XP), at 10 allows you to change to other classes after you speak to their respective receptionists.
5. Do Hunting Log! Mobs that are in your log have a symbol above their names, look like an ear or 3 parenthesis.
6. Experience chain (for those not familiar with FF MMO): Kill mobs that are at same level or higher within certain time, you can get bonus XP. After killing the 2nd one within a couple of minutes of the first, a counter will show up next to the XP bar, that indicates your window for the next kill, it becomes less and less as you go up in chain.
7. Do story quests, at close to 10 you should unlock inn housing and leves.
8. If you're going to idle for a while, do it in your inn housing or at a sanctuary outpost for rested XP!

Feel free to add more.

Unfortunately, that's how MMO has evolved and how players have come to expect it since WoW. Questing and accessible combat. The antiquated model of EQ and FFXI can no longer sustained. If you want a challenge, play a caster class, they are still very much underpowered when soloing compared to Disciples of War.

It sounds like it picks up significantly after the first few hours, which is all I have played. I suspected as much and need to spend more time with it in order to see what all is really on offer here.

so just some thoughts after hitting level 15

The Map is awful

There's some really rough spots(maybe I was just doing it wrong) but I basically ran out of quests at some points and had to use FATE's to level up(at both level 9->10 and 14>15)

They really mapped the game pretty well with the PS3 controller. With a keyboard, there shouldn't be too many problems for anyone wanting to play this way. Although PC is ideal with all the menus and stuff.

The difficulty spikes in some of the missions is kind of bizarre to me as i'm getting my ass kicked on the level 15 class quest. I'm not sure if you are able to bring in party members into the instances but trying to do it when it's available doesn't work out well.

Game overall looks good but it needs more polish. I never did play the original 14 but the overall feeling I get from the game is that it needs a couple of months to round out the rough parts but then again that's just my opinion at least

If people are running out of things to do inorder to level prior to level 15 they are not using the hunters log.

Yup, my first time with my mage I couldn't get above lvl 9 because i ran out of stuff to do. Finally found out about the hunting log so my gladiator is going through levels now.

I think the code I got sent earlier were for an American account - so if anyone have a spare EU PS3 code for the beta, I would be more than happy to receive such on on PM - thanks in advance fellow gaffers. :)

Just joined, name is Olrac Sennin. As someone who was severely disappointed with Version 1 (even bought CE) I think this may become my new MMO home.

Just quickly make an American PSN account then redeem the code to DL it and log back into your EU account.

Got to level 8 last night as a Marauder on the PS3 Version on server Ultros....game is surprisingly fun. Took a queue out of Guild Wars 2 book with the Timed events in the area which is nice.

I'm very happy with the PS3 version so far. I'm almost certainly going to buy this on PS4 when that version comes out. After all the years I spent on FFXI, I'll probably get the collector's edition too if the PS4 version has one. Extremely impressed by how much they've improved the game.

Only lvl 3, still doing basic shit. Only other MMO I have played was DCUO. Bought it and a year sub at launch and enjoyed it. With that said will my experience with DCUO help at all in this game?

Also of I do end up enjoying this, I will prob get it for PS4 as well.

The lighting is fantastic even though the tree shadows spaz out sometimes on cutscenes.

Oh yeah I'm not saying the lighting is bad in fact I think it looks great. That is however the biggest change as it gives a more washed out feel during the day but I would take that over the overblown white look the original had.

Game is certainly pretty I've been everywhere in Limsa now and I am surprised at every new area I find it is truly great looking. Only complaint is lalafell should not have such prominent lips it looks incredibly weird lol whoever thought this was a good idea was wrong.

You can certainly see a big difference.

I need to hit lvl 15 so I can use the airship I really wanna see Uldah.

So I thought they were taking out the GCD way of doing abilities/weapon skills? Or is it only for some abilities? Or maybe it's just because I only have 3 spells (Conjurer), but they have just the GCD as the only wait to use them again.

Weapon skills for the most part still share GCD, everything else does not such as abilities, those can be triggered whenever.

And yes the map is crap, I have gotten lost so many times because I could not figure out where I should be or where it was pointing to.

Overall the game is quite fun and I am enjoying it enough that I don't regret picking up a copy the other day when it was on sale. Playing through with a couple friends has been a lot of fun, I just wish I could have gotten another key for my gf to play with me.

100% agree it fucking sucks. It's so confusing to know where to go if its not in the zone your in. Other then that I'm liking the game so far

Yeah, if you try to view where you have to go for a quest that isn't in the same area you are in, you're pretty screwed. In v1.0, it would load up the individual map where you had to go to for the quest and was much more helpful to me.

Oh okay. Hmm, I think I preferred the v1.2 style of how weapon skills and abilities worked where they all had various cooldowns. *shrug*

Playing this on a living room TV at 1080p 60fps on PS4, and on the sofa/vita when the TV's in use (Also in bed), is going to be glorious..

Man this game is awesome, beta changed my opinion on it. I'm really considering getting it at launch but the subscrition is turning me off, it's 15 a month right?

Its probably been asked before, but as a owner of the PC version, will I be able to play this on my PS3? Or will I need to buy it again for PS3?

It does feel like since WoW took off, mainstream mmo combat has moved toward the equivalent of beating up small children and taking their lunch money. It's so grossly one-sided and removes the challenge element unless you're specifically looking to get killed.

I'm enjoying my time with this immensely, but I miss goblins and dhalmels that could wipe entire parties. Remember Bibiki Bay?

There's plenty of extremely hard content in WoW. They just moved it to Heroic raids, which require a dedicated guild to even attempt. Those raids are hard as shit for 90% of the subscriber base.

Now if you're referring to solo content, you would be right that there's nothing remotely hard there.

I'm about to start playing for the first time ever today and I'm scared. When the real game releases I'll start fresh again right?

I want to trick my wife into playing with me so she doesn't nag me later on. Maybe I can start a female Mithra; she likes cats.

It's crazy it just doesn't work. It's pretty but its not a functioning map system. I hope they change it

My God. Can I just go fight something already? This tutorial is so long! I mean, it's okay the first time, but you should be able to skip it to see if this is a game you want to play.
