No. There are however a lot of people who actually like voice acting in mmorpgs instead of realizing the unnecessary costs and restraints that they add to the genre, and thus always want more of it.

Well, some parts do feel a little barren without it. It would have been nice to see the opening with the merchant voiced for example. I also would like it if more of the main story was voiced.

There wasn't any reason for 3/4 of the main story cutscenes to be unvoiced. Everyone is going to do the main story after all.

SWTOR probably took it a bit far by voicing every line in the whole game, but it's not unreasonable to want a mainline numbered Final Fantasy title to have the expected production values that being a mainline title implies.

I doubt the cutscene rushing is that prevalent. I've only used duty finder and I've never experienced it

Have you done the final 2 level 50 Story missions? There are a ton of lengthy cutscenes all over and for everything that happens. Up until those two instances the cutscenes are pretty short or only take place after the final boss dies.

For Nvidia card users, is 320.49 the most stable driver currently for this game?

I use the Geforce Experience program to update my drivers, so I was just wondering if this is the driver people were referring to that offered the most stable improvements to FFXIV's performance.

Some people remarked that the 326.80 set provided a decent performance boost. They're beta, but I've been using them since launch without issue.

The intro [and outro] cut-scene(s) for *Early Spoilers for Level 20 Ul'dah Story Mission*
Ifrit
were decently lengthy.

Speaking of, does he drop loot? Once the end cut-scene stopped my party was gone and there was no chest or anything. I'm trying to discern if they simply looted while I was watching the scene and it timed out on me.

Other then the added cost to development and loss of flexibility to be able to change things around as time goes by, something that happens in many mmos that last a long time.

Voice acting is a plague on most genres of games.
imo

They're really not that long. People are just impatient and farming them for tomestones..

The only MMO which has ever gone back and changed old main story stuff is WoW. No other MMO has ever done that. I'm pretty sure it would have been safe to voice all the main story quests and not have to worry about retconning the whole thing later.

What's the situation with that levequest?

Hq turn in for 3 aldgoat leather gives almost 20k xp starting at level 15. I turned it in 40 times on Monday since I never used a levequest before that. All were HQ turn ins.

Ok nope not there yet. I've only done through toko rak or whatever it's called.

Holy shit. I just hit 15 on my LTW yesterday so I gotta try that if it hasn't been "fixed". Where do you get aldgoat leather? (Or the hides or whatever you need to craft the leather?)

Well, it seems to me he was thinking of the mainly static scenes, major events that combined would be about the same as a typical RPG... or maybe not even that, but a typical SHOOTER. Voicing every damn incidental quest is insane, and it's likely why TOR was as much as a money hole as it was whereas if it were a mostly text based Bioware MMO it would've been a smash success relatively. Though I wouldn't be surprised if people underestimated the hassles of VA, especially if they keep being called in for new scenes every few weeks due to huge content patches.

And yeah, I do agree that VA can actually be a bane on a lot of games. Granted for some it wouldn't work as well for whatever reason, but the pressured "necessity" to include it is toxic and potentially very harmful. Severely limits writing and options in games, and while some can stand to be less verbose we seem to be seeing the opposite extreme far more frequently with heavy VA regardless of how high a cost it brings.

Admittedly FFXIV itself IS a variant of this: WoW as I recall didn't just rewrite a huge chunk of the game, it was basically continuing it from a major plot event. In that sense ARR is just a more extreme example, not only closing off the older story via these major events happening but scrapping the entire game and engine to be replaced with a new one. Though for that reason... yeah, we probably won't see ARR do similar: why do it a third time?

Alchemy has similarly easy leves. I think it's intended. As soon as the servers come back up I plan on turning in 90 HQ potions of intelligence. They're super easy to make and give about 42k exp per allowance because you can turn in 3 times.

Not even talking about massive world and story reshuffles like WoW. Small things like a simple text change or error changed. Things that if you ever want to fix or change you would have to go though a lot more hassle then just changing the text if you have it voiced. It takes time, money, and effort and for what? So 99% of the players can laugh at the English voices and skip it? So you have to limit the length of the text and story for cost issues? Fuck that. Spend that time and money on things that make the game better instead.

Not every mmorpg is WoW, and not everytime someone talks about something happening in mmorpgs are they talking just about WoW.

Farm the goats in eastern Thanalan. With my archer I could just chain pull them since they were level 18. It can be a bit hard to get the hq at first but the leather
Sells well too. I increased my chances by buying hq alumen, which is also needed, because its cheap and worth it. Once you get a few levels past 15. You can pretty much hq every piece.i went from 15-28 in a few hours.

Nothing you are talking about here has anything to do with what I'm talking about. The fact of the matter is they already voiced some of the main story cutscenes, there's no reason why they half-assed it and didn't just voice all of them. VA isn't rocket science, Squenix has been voicing their RPGs since FFX in 1999-2001. You lock down the script, localize, check for errors, and then record the VA. There isn't any changing of text involved, these people are professionals who have already figured shit out, translated and localized, checked and double checked before one line is recorded.

Nope, he doesn't drop any loot.

You're right though, the Primals do have decent length intros. Still doesn't quite compare to Praetorium where every boss has a long intro/outro and they even squeeze them in between boss phases and after certain trash packs.

Cool I wasn't sure if they were intended or not.

It's just weird to me that

Level 15 turn in gives 6k base for 3 Aldgoat leather

Level 20 turn in gives like 4.5k base for 5 Aldgoat leather.

Nothing you are talking about here has anything to do with what I'm talking about.

We weren't talking about how unnecessary and restrictive voice acting is in mmorpgs? I mean I know we are since you are the one that responded to me first when I claimed that it was.

Edit: After reading your edited post it seems we just have a different opinion on what is important in this genre. Voice acting is near the bottom for me, and I have always viewed it as a limiting factor that would prevent a vast amount of dialog and intricacy in the world because of the costs and hassles associated with it. How limited the voice acting in FFXIV is a good example of that. Don't you think they, squareenix, would have added as much voice acting as they could into the game knowing that their target audience expects more style over substance? It is cost and time prohibitive on top of everything else.

New patch just in time for me to get home from work :D

Such awesome timing that I can now come home and play. Only took 3 mins tops. Now we eat and wait!

I personally don't mind the VA being here and there. VA throughout the entire game would probably kill it. In multiple languages? Shit is probably one of the more expensive aspects for what little it adds.

Ifrit?

Thanks, I was beginning to worry that I missed out.

I'm both looking forward to [and fearing] the later cut-scenes in the end-dungeons. If anyone gives me complaints for watching them, that's too bad! It's a game that I spent my money on, I have the freedom to watch any/all cut-scenes I please.

Of course if they appear in subsequent visits I will skip them, but I'm watching them initially!

Well, first off you went off on some tangent ranting about text edits and finished with some diatribe about WoW. So maybe I missed this whole point.

But you're still wrong. MMOs are not any different from single player games when it comes to the ability to tell a cohesive and meaningful overarching story for the player. FFXI pretty much invented the single-player RPG story wrapped in an MMO shell, and FFXIV follows that story system pretty straightforwardly. So insofar as voice acting in an MMO, when used for the main story, improves a player's engagment just it does in a single-player RPG, guess what it does. Does every dumb little thing need to be voiced like in SWTOR? No, but I am not being unreasonable in expecting the main story to be fully voiced, especially in a half-assed situation like in ARR where half the main story is randomly voiced and the other half isn't. They are already doing it, so why not do it right?

Well his argument is just more of the story cutscenes voiced, and I expect he means all of the actually important ones, where you're not just doing some stupid filler type garbage but making significant plot progression. Having so few of THOSE voiced is kind of odd, even if there's no damn need to voice a quest where I have to go save bees or some garbage, even if said quest IS part of the main questline for some reason.

Though as noted even those major ones may entail roping everyone together for just a few minutes of VA in major quests or content in a patch IE new primals, and at that point is it REALLY worth it? Might be better to leave very little voiced versus looking inconsistent.

At about a gig, this is a pretty large update for just bug fixes - there's got to be some new content in here.
It'd be nice if it was a surprise 1.2 patch release with all of the item-sort options and such.

My bags are pretty cluttered, and that bothers me. >_<

Can I just say how horrendous the PS3 version is sometimes?

Like a lot of fates you have your party go invisible as well as the monsters invisible most of the time. The hourly fate bosses are a struggle cause you can't see them most of the time it's really frustrating

I turned off all spell effects from party members and randoms and somehow I can still see their stuff.

Also a lot of times it takes like a minute to load NPCs I need to talk to for quests it's dumb.

Enemies need priority to load first over other characters tho.

Cause fate farming on PS3 ch...

The tech support forum is a gold mine of fun, I can't stop reading it. That high level dungeon Ampador Keep can be exploited by having a tank run right to the last boss, what are the repercussions of that? Do you get the tomes necessary for gear by beating said boss and so they just do it over and over?

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/80033-EXPLOIT-Amdapor-Keep
I've actually done that before at the behest of a tank, but we still failed because the bosses in there are pretty damn hard. Especially the second one.
It's not as easy as it sounds lol

Don't get me wrong, I think the cutscenes are a lot of fun and worth suffering through the idiots, especially the final battle. I was just saying I can understand why the pressure doesn't exist early on. The nice thing is that since Duty finder doesn't allow you to kick people theres not much they can do besides whine. =)

That happens for me on the PC as well on a couple FATEs. Svera for example, I could not see for half the fight.
