Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail |OT|

Lost Actions would have been perfectly fine if they were simply unlockables and not limited supply consumables (the reason I think many didn't bother with good ones). I think having the potions be limited was fine though. I also thought the weight capacity for carrying actions/pots was enough of a limitation and perfectly fine.

Regardless of what they could have done with them, they were far better than that crap with logograms/logos actions and combining nonsense.

Think of how many Castrum/Delubrum/Dalriada runs were longer than they should have been because dummies didn't bring the right Actions. Ugh.

Haha! You ain't wrong about that. However it was really neat to go in those dummy runs even as a job like MCH and just pop something like Deep Essence of the Beast, Lost Assassination, and Banner of Noble Ends/Honored Sacrifice, Auto-Potion, Reraiser. Phys Ranged face tank everything (mostly self sustaining) and still crap all over their dps lol. You could combo better for a little more dps, but I hard carried so many runs like that. That and getting queued into Dalriada with only 1 or 2 people and being like, "fuck it, we ball" and clearing anyway.

Only things I have left in OC are 4k more chests , and too many pot fates & bunnies to think about. Very disappointing overall. Forked tower is just a total slog. It takes TEN full clears to get full +2, more likely 30 1st boss clears give or take. There is ZERO loot unique to farm in Tower outside of upgrades you only need to farm tower more efficiently. You can buy the 3 minions/2 music scrolls off AH, the mount already comes from reg chests outside, and that's mostly it. Not sure why the fuck anyone would run it 100 clears when you only need 70 for full +2 on all.

【Part Two】

  • Patch 7.3 Part 1
  • Miscellaneous Updates
Looks like Yoshi-P is going to spend some time on Friday addressing feedback on Occult Crescent. Some people were hoping that today's maintenance would bring some adjustments to entering Forked Tower but it's too short of a time span for this dev team to implement changes of that scale.

I haven't even tried entering FT because I've seen how it can take hours to get the entire alliance in the same instance. aintnobodygottimeforthat.gif
It was simpler to do so in Hydatos because those instances were capped at 144 people, as opposed to OC being capped at half that.

Another grind complete.

I haven't been able to get into tower yet... spent all day in queue on ABBA discord and nothin. Maybe this weekend.

The excuse of budget for no normal and savage Forked Tower is kind of shit imo. So their solution was to only do a savage one and appeal to the minority. Ok, great allocation of budget for what will now just be dead content instead of continuously active and flexible like the Bozja stuff.

Also sucks that they can't see that only having 1 FATE and 1 CE up at any given point is kind of shit and also part of why the FATEs die so fast in OC. Single trains were a thing in Bozja, but you at least had the choice to hit up other FATEs if you wanted to. OC is just a single endless hunt train basically.

The amount of cuts made from previous zones to make OC is kind of mind boggling. Couldn't be bothered for duels as well, which would have been forgiven had everything else landed well and didn't get skimped out on.

Only positive I got out of that LL were the hats, and that should have been done years ago.

yeah I wish there was an easy Forked Tower for those of us who just want to complete it for the experience
the mount isn't even cool like BA

After a few runs that only did boss 1 and wiped at boss 2, I randomly ended up in a clear group I didn't realize was a clear group. Got all the way to the final boss, but ran out of rezzes and the group wiped on him anyhow. Afterward they were all pissy about me having not cleared before and I was like FFS I just joined because people in voice of last group said they were joining that group and I followed. Boss 2 seems like the worst of the bunch, though final boss is also harsh. I had gotten +1 for tank but it seems like it's actually easier to get in groups as DPS (since more slots avail) so working on +1 set for that now.

Looks like the next relic weapon step will be 7.31 instead of 7.3... I think I'm going to just wait for that before resubbing.
It will be interesting to see the end of the dawntrail storyline though and find out what's coming next...

7.2 was a solid patch overall, hopefully the conclusion of the Alexandria story will be satisfying. Interested to see if Calyx's role in the story is completely wrapped up in 7.3 or if he's going to hang around into the next expac.

New census is out. Drop of ~70k (7%) players in 2 months, despite the addition of content that was supposed to attract and retain returning players (OC, relics)

Don't think 7.3 will fare much better since it's just the conclusion to an unpopular storyline and the next alliance raid.

Oh for sure. The drop is going to be something for 7.3. Nobody gives a shit about deep dungeon and the little addition they made to it isn't going to change that. The whole deep dungeon system needed a complete rework into something else entirely.

I think people tend to underestimate how much value FFXIV players put on the quality of the story, because it is not usually very important in the context of an MMO relative to the breadth of multiplayer content like dungeons/raids. The sharp drop in story quality with Dawntrail soured a lot of people on the game, and the active player trends are reflecting that.

1 new dungeon and 1 new trial (2nd crafter planet \ deep dungeon month+ later) sure as fuck isnt going to keep people around for another 6 months.

They really squandered the opportunity to try something new with Dawntrail, and instead just fell back on the expansion formula they established with Heavensward 10 years ago.

My pie-in-the-sky dream for XIV is that they do away with the decade-old MSQ formula completely and pivot into something more like FFXI, where the map is dangerous and exciting to explore again. Basically, I want them to turn every map into exploratory zones with content to grind and discover (dungeons, hunts, NMs, trials, story, etc) so that there's actual MMO content on day one of an expansion launch.

As it stands, most of the zones are just a waste of space and effort. They've been touting how the graphics update has allowed them to make bigger maps with more objects but it almost feels pointless because most people don't interact with the zones outside of MSQ.

My achievement grinding has hit a real wall. The only major things I have left to grind:
1. About 1000 hours of RNG PvP grinding. Since you can't queue for most of it with premades at all, it's a complete roll of the dice and way too boring overall.
2. about 20 BLU achievements that I missed the initial rush on, and PFs fall apart quickly on.
3. About 1000 hours of RNG treasure dungeons to get 20 final doors. This one is at least partially profitable, but tedious. Some days you get 2 clears in an hour, so weeks you spend hours for zero progress.
4. The-not-difficult-but-insanely-long-for-no-reason-achievements: 5k chests in OC, 1000 pot fates\bunny chests, 3000 chocobo races, another 100 verminion wins, 20k hoards, too many S ranks to count, 5k leve achievements... These I do make some progress on from time to time but fuuuuck it isn't fun.
5. The last 23 fish I need to catch. Prob going to go back to these next as at least it feels like SOME progress made day to day.

7.3 will be fun for about 5 hours.

Patch is up for download so datamined spoilers are coming out. The 7.3 Dawntrail trial is exactly what everyone thought it would be: Necron

Lots of Cash Shop stuff (of course) like the new $24 cat mount and new FFT glams, probably to coincide with the remaster release.

Also tested out all my hats on my viera and I'd say maybe 60% of them are now visible. But they're not very consistent in their compatibility. The Nier Type 51 hoods show up but 53 doesn't? Strange. Still, I appreciate that I can finally wear some hats. Here's hoping the rest of the hats don't take another 6 years...

"How do you do fellow Hyurs?"

OH and don't forget to change the Character Display Range to Maximum. Also Character and Object Quantity to Max if your PC can manage it. Did two hunt trains this morning and it's so much better, I was able to see the hunt target much further out and they never flickered out of sight even with 300+ players hunting

Finished the 7.3 MSQ. For a Dawntrail story that has been rather messy and often hampered by poor writing, I suppose I shouldn't be so disappointed at the notion that its conclusion would likewise be messy and poorly written....but here I am, disappointed nonetheless.

  • First of all, I think it is outrageous that at no point - not after Zoraal Ja ordered the mechanized sentries to mass murder Alexandrian civilians, nor after Calyx does the same thing later, nor after Calyx does it AGAIN later - does any character even consider the notion that maybe, just maybe, allowing the sentries to remain active is a bad idea. They take the sentries' weapons away but don't even consider the possibility that they could just beat people to death without them. Are we to believe that Alexandria's leaders are just catastrophically stupid?
  • Pour one out for Geode.....or don't, because who is going to care about the death of the character who we spend basically no time with, who shows up in a handful of scenes and has little to say other than "Yep, that sounds like a plan, I'll go do my part". I honestly forgot he was even a character before he walked in on the first 7.3 cutscene. At least Shale hangs out with the party enough to be somewhat memorable.
  • Calyx just kind of sucks as a villain. Nothing he says is remotely compelling. His whole plan to deal with the WoL is essentially "I'll study them a bunch and come up with a bigger stick to whack them with", and he never attempts any other approach after that one fails the first, second, third, or fourth time. And then his grand masterstroke to defeat an individual singularly famous for killing primals is....to summon a primal? By the time 7.3 was over I was more than ready to be done with him and move on....but unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case. Oh and we're back to Ascians again, lest anybody suspect that fresh ideas for antagonists might be in the making.

I might do the alliance raid for the heck of it, but after that I'm probably going to unsub for the first time since I started playing in 2019. There just isn't enough going on in the game that's appealing to me, and what little glimpse we got of the future story doesn't suggest that this is likely to change anytime soon.

Game is cooked bro. The new writers think the playerbase are idiots. 8.0 is gonna make or break this game. Outlook not so good.

Square Enix Q1 2025 financial report shows a really sharp decline in particularly the MMO division with FFXIV YoY after the launch of Dawntrail.

MMO gross sales decreased by ¥2.9 billion yen (-23%) and operational profits are down ¥3 billion (-45%)

Square Enix shareholder Yuzu writes that something must be done for FFXIV to regain its popularity and user base as it is an important pillar to the company's HD game sales.

He writes that the current increase in stock prices due to the activist funding is inflated and not an accurate reflection of company health.
The fire has been lit under their asses. Now, let's see what they do about it...

We shall see. Pretty sad it's gone this way but perhaps it's for the best it just shuts down. They self-sabotaged themselves by depriving XIV of it's budget.

I wouldn't go that far. Yes, the game is decline, but it can be fixed. They need to go back to the output they had in 5.x, both in terms of quantity and quality. The 5.x MSQ, Nier raids, Eden raids, and Bozja were all really good content. The only content in 7.x that's been on that level of quality are the Arcadion raids.

I don't want it shut down but their general cycle of dead on arrival content and 2 dungeons for a whole year is not sustainable. Nor is the insult they want to sell you overpriced items on the cash shop that cost just as much as a new expansion. Pretty sad.

They need to get their shit together.

Shadowbringers was pretty amazing. And it saddens me they chose to decline and shoot themselves in the foot.

The biggest mod in the game is shutting down due to a 'legal inquiry'

This mod lets you sync your character's visual mods with others and is a major reason why many casual and RP players even subscribe to the game.

I don't use the mod so I'm indifferent but the timing couldn't have been worse given the fact that Dawntrail is bleeding subs.

I haven't played in awhile and they sent me a free playtime period. I thought about it, but then I remembered they demolished my house and all the items I spent years collecting in it are deleted from escrow by now too. So I am not bothering. Really dumb policies to keep players away.

Free login campaign

Glad I didn't resub yet... I'm sure 4 days will be plenty of time for me to go through the 7.3 content
Wait until Monday to start the campaign and you can do both Moonfire and Rising events during the 4 day free period

Yeah, it's terrible. WoW recently showcased their Housing and it blows XIV's out of the water. They've got Housing for everyone, an intuitive UI, and you won't lose your house if you unsub.

Some people are hoping (read: coping) that WoW's housing will inspire XIV to improve their housing but even if it does, it probably won't happen anytime soon...
