Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

I believed that until Duke Nukem Forever came out.

I know development hell, it's a joke.

Duke Nukem Forever, the version we got, was also a result of 3D Realms financial and legal issues with 2K, and having their assets given over to Gearbox, who rushed it out in a year.

FFVXIII, was folded into FFXV in 2012, and will likely have a 4-5 year development time of its own when all is said and done.

I'm going to cry if they removed this scene from the game and changed cute Noctis.

Not when they keep changing stuff shown literally 8 months ago.

I think most of those things had been changed for a long time, yet they were too afraid to tell us, actually =/

I mean... aside from that ATR, this year we had Duscae and...duscae and... almost no new info in the rest of the game, so things might be gone for more than a year now and we woudn't know the details because they are hiding them =|

We dont know yet, we know because of some policy for the Se USA we won't have previous voices of main characters to come and do main characters.

The Japanese ones are voice actors from SE anime like FMA and ugh FREE

Tatsuhisa Suzuki was cast as Noctis before his appearance in Free.

And that's why I'm most upset about it.

You mean like everyone else does?
tbh... Yeah.

Like, I don't actually want complete radio silence like what happened during the Versus XIII days but sometimes I just want a 2 or 3 cool looking trailers and then tons of info really close to release and not this constant stream of "Oh, but we changed this..." or "We still not sure about that aspect..."

Maybe I'm just salty because I liked the old design of Regis =P

I think there will be sequels to recuperate costs. The game is taking forever to come out and it has been a giant money sink.

Normally I'd agree, but there's two things that make me hesitate:

1. I personally don't think anyone at SE wants to make them. Speculation obviously, but Tabata has kind of given off the impression that he just wants to work on Type Next or his own thing in general, rather than rearranging Nomura's ideas. And obviously Nomura isn't going to be chomping at the bit to make a canonical sequel to the bastardized version of his baby (that seems to be growing more and more different from the original concept every time we see it).

2. UE4 is very clearly working way better for them than Luminous and trying to salvage anything from it is ironically more wasteful than cutting their losses and moving on.

Yeah.

Tabata said rather than make sequels they took a lot of the planned material and scope for a Versus saga and incorporated it into one game

I agree with you actually but see below

But now he's mentioning sequels again. ???

This gives me pause and they might change their minds.

But now he's mentioning sequels again. ???

And in the same breath he seemed to imply that he did not want to personally make them. I find myself honestly wondering how much Tabata even LIKES the project he's been given, let alone whether or not he's even passionate. I'm starting to get the uncomfortable feeling that Tabata is a reluctant hatchet man which is in stark opposition to his claims a couple years ago that he was looking to make the best Final Fantasy ever.

Luminues broke his spirit :P

Yep.

Tabata does not look like he enjoys being on this project. And he's inserting his own ideas into the game. Which would be fine. Had he not been director of Type 0, the paragon of good story and good characters....

If so that's very unprofessional. Naoki Yoshida used to design Dragon Quest arcade games before he was given FFXIV. I don't know if he was even a huge fan of the FF series. Yet he did a great job salvaging a project that wasn't his.

What if Versus was an incomplete mess of a story with massive cliffhangers? That means they have to rework the whole thing to make one that has proper conclusion, and a sequel can focus on different parts of its world, basically like FFXII set in different parts of Ivalice from FFT.

Yoshida loves FF7, so yes.

Getting a bit tired of the "demos" for this game, honestly. It still just looks like a tech demo to me. "Ladies and gentlemen, we hope you enjoyed watching Noctis walk around. Did you notice the animations? Nice, right? See you guys later."

I seem to remember Yoshida being a fan, favourite ff was 6...

Let me play a prequel with Young Regis in war against Niflheim.

There's nothing unprofessional about doing a job you didn't necessarily want and making the best of it. And it's not like he's come out and said "this game sucks, I hate working on this!"

The way he framed it in ATR was: related content (not necessarily direct sequel) could be something good for new directors to cut their teeth on. Not: keep me away from this steaming pile.

Tabata's a creator, not a businessman.

Some developers actually work very hard on getting a game finish that sometimes they don't actually get time for them selves or their family. So him working 100% on FFXV like this maybe getting him a bit down as he's not able to do stuff with his free time and it's starting to get to him.

Heck some developers are to busy developing the game to even get a chance to play it.

Reminds my of Mangakas with there crazy schedules.

And that's why I'm most upset about it.

I'd say the problem was the 2013 trailer... it's the first one as Final fantasy XV, yet they still used a lot of elements from VsXIII when that trailer was produced, they had just started the project so they didn't felt any need to change anything from the plot...then they might've realised some ideas were not working and changed things, they even tried to hide the project for some time so we forget... BUT since the trailer was still fresh in our minds (IT WAS SO FREAKIN AWESOME T-T) the changes look like the worst thing it could ever happen =/

Things didn't start to be changed from there until 2014.

Whaaat?! That makes it sound like they essentially switched visions two years after the next gen development began! Was this the shift they did just to avoid sequels that they're probably going to develop anyway?

Things do change from time to time with games, just like how FF13 was actually being developed on a PS2 or the over all game changes, Chrono Trigger changed so much from it's (perhaps) Announcement trailer back in late 93 early 94? This also happens in non RPG games as well. Like a cut level in Super Mario Bros 3. appearing on the back of the US box. (it was still in the game, but wasn't actually used)

I'm not surprised by the changes in FFXV. The only thing I hope for is the game is going to be good.

Great interview by Novacrystallis with Tabata by the way. I like that the question of outfit where everyone is dressed in black were raised. Don't like the answer though. :/ I want to know if I can see Noctis and others not completely dressed in black, not just the side characters.

Yeah, also Oerba Yun Fang was originally male, but they changed her into a sexy female in order to better contrast with Lightning's seriousness.

It probably depends on the deal SE/Nomura made with Roen about there clothes.

Yes. But that's what I meant: they should've reannounced the title in 2014, not 2013, they reanounced the title in 2013, when they'd finally started working on the game, in 2013 I don't really think they had to time to read whatever they had on the plot to see if it works or not, but they had to make a trailer to put out there, so they used what they had.
A lot of ideas can change when you let an incomplete story rest for years, yet they released that trailer without considering this, giving us the false impression the story was all nice and finished, it probably wasn't.

If the (re)announcement of FFXV happened later, i don't think the changes would look that bad since they would just say straight away that things in the story would change.

JPGames.de: It has been announced that Kingdom Heats 3 changed the graphics engine to Unreal 4. For XV, you use the Luminous Engine, which was universally designed for several games. But now it seems it’s become an exclusive engine for Final Fantasy XV. Will future Final Fantasy games still use it?

Tabata: No, we are not planning making them all on Luminous. The first version of the engine was designed as a generic game creation engine. But it turned out that the first one wasn’t particularly powerful to make high quality games.

Tabata admitting Luminous 1.0 was indeed a failure.

When has a mainline offline FF game allowed costume changes? Especially the post-VI era FF's.

It makes sense when you consider Yoshihisa Hashimoto - the guy in charge of Luminous Studio - as well as the Global Technology lead both left last year.

It's really amazing how Square Enix fucked up 2 engines in a row for 2 consecutive generations.

Like...you know I thought they would have learned from White Engine/Crystal Tools last gen.

I literally like all the answers Tabata gave in the interview. Unfortunately, Regis redesign was not asked about when we saw him in JF 8 months ago, and heard him in the Duscae endding 4 months ago. I really want to know when things changed.

Etro was a key point in Versus and a key area that connected Noctis and Stella.

Perhaps Etro was removed to distance the title from XIII/Fabula.

There has been no hint of her since the game got rebranded.

Well other then the cover :P

Or if that was Etro in that painting at the end of the demo.

They might have just changed her name.

Maybe something happened with the voice actor?

I don't know

Um... the damn demo ending? She's in the painting front and center.

Pls continue spreading more misinformation gaf.

So a little summary of the recently discussed:
.PS4 version probably running at 1080p
.XB1 version probably running at 900p
.Avalanche partnership to polish airship mechanics
.Game development as in the game itself beyond 75%, goes down to 65%-75% due to localisation and debugging, aiming at global release.
.Luna is going to be BADASS
.Announcement of the event holding the release date announcement at PAX Prime later this month.

Am I missing anything?

Show all the bolded in an extensive future trailer and you will have people loving this game again.

I asked my French friends to ask about it so we'll see if they were able.
