Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

The problem is Toriyama isn't a game designer, he's an event planner. It means his strengths are in story and scenario. The reason his games have 'excellent' battle systems is the involvement of game design underlings. There's no talent from Toriyama in that department.

Just to play a little Toriyama's advocate here.

Toriyama is like weird extract. He's too potent to put in large doses, and you shouldn't make an entire dish out of him, but he can really add a lot of charm to something other people are making with him.

Namely the Wall Market section of FF7. What an insane, yet awesome section. DON'T give me an entire game like that, but DO put in sections like that to surprise me!

Toriyama's strength is shaking things up, but his weakness is when he is left unchecked, his creations have a tendency to be too out there for people to like.

Nah, let him finish VIIR, then move he and Team Osaka on a new IP.
They need one (to gear up for the eventual transition to next-gen, and honestly it would be ridiculous if we get to FFXX, and Team Osaka is too talented to only do KH games)), and Nomura's their best shot at it.
It's a fast and efficient team, and with UE4 they could make it in a reasonable amount of time.
Plus, it would give Nomura the same freedom he had during his Versus period.
I thought Nomura said Kingdom Hearts III wouldn't be the end of the series but just the end of the Xehanort saga. Granted Nomura could work on multiple projects anyway, but if the Osaka team started working on another franchise, a new team would need to be put together for future Kingdom Hearts games.

You do know that Toriyama created a scenario in which you can obtain Marlene's (Barret's daughter) panties in the Wall Market section of FF7, right?

There's shaking things up, and then there's a line to be drawn on the creativity. I think Toriyama's "creativity" is not one that is needed anywhere.

I'm hoping Itou is on FF16, not Toriyama.

Give Toriyama Chrono Break or Valkyrie Profile 3 or something, assuming he didn't use up their design docs already making FFXIII sequels.

Slow down Satan, there's no need to lambast the carcasses of a dead franchise like this. Can't it just have a peaceful rest? Why do you wish such horrible things upon it, man? Crono's had a hard life :(

I always got the impression that Nomura was grooming the Osaka team and Tai Yasue to take over for the series once he's done with it. I do think he wants to move on to a new IP, but if he does I think it'll probably be with the KH1/2 team.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm getting at. He can't be left unchecked, but Wall Market on the whole was a great change of pace. People sure as hell will never forget it.

Would a FFXVI be on current gen consoles? I don't see an announcement of XVI until E3 2017 at the earliest.
I expect so. Regardless of 2017 e3 I doubt that some team at SE haven't been working on it in some capacity for a while. Whether it's Luminous or not....SE should just embrace UE4 and mod it to their needs with help from Epic.

NO, Toriyama nearly ruined FF for the entire generation don't let him tarnish Chrono.

With big games like that let him be an event planner hes great, but design, directing and shit like that no.

They showed it during the ATR.

Must have missed it.

So it seems some of the story from Versus is still there, however the part with Stella vs Noctis (or in this case Luna vs Noctis ) is assumed to be gone right? Unless its now deemed to be a spoiler. I just hope Luna is a major character (don't think she will be playable).

It's a bit of a waste, i don't want them to keep doing KHs forever :(

Well they're supposedly allies now, so i don't think they'll fight each other.
She is obviously a major character and still the heroine of the game, rest assured.
And it's been hinted she'll eventually join the party as a guest character.

I don't see why not that XVI can't be current gen. I mean current gen is only 2 years old and with how long the PS360 era has lasted and is still getting cross gen games I think we'll see it for our consoles.

I just have a feeling this era will be even longer than the previous one.

If they already started on the 16 project and have an untroubled development cycle, then yes, 16 could be current gen.

However, the last 4 mainline Final Fantasy games (12, 13, 14, 15) have all suffered development problems. The odds are stacked against 16 coming out this generation.

I think so. After FF XV is released i'm sure they will drop the Luminous engine and just use UE4. If they aren't already using it for early FF XVI development. Weren't they already working on FF X when IX came out? The FF VII remake is using it along with Kingdom Hearts 3 already so by then they should be pretty familiar with it.

That is true, but I think XV might prove to be a valuable lesson and they wont mess up this bad again.

Have you guys seen the concept art of Lucil? Man, just those towers add so much intrigue.

I'm gonna love the barren environments in this game. I welcome them as long as they're just for scenery.

Gives me a bit of a Gaur Plains vibe from Xenoblade, but a desolate dreary version.

At this point we better pray it's just that. I wonder how done the overall environments are.

I said the same thing after XIII...

lol touche. I guess we will have to wait and see but can't expect much.

I would like to see the other areas of Lucius especially the more commercial areas.

After Witcher 3, Duscae 2.0 enviroments feels so empty and lifeless.

I feel that Witcher 3 set up a new standard which SE is not meeting, XV looks like "My first open world game".

Witcher 3 is great but we'll see how XV is when it's finished. It's probable they're still improving the demo area.

I personally enjoy the atmosphere of Duscae. I also expect it will be improved for the final game with more enemy variety, weather systems and probably more vegetation.

After Witcher 3? Duscae would barely be acceptable last gen. It was basically Gran Pulse with a worse framerate.

That's...not a bad comparisson.

I'd say is slightly better than Gran Pulse, but it also does the same mistakes Gran Pulse did.

The new gameplay shown kinda offers the same type of barren landscapes the demo did. I'm afraid they really think this is good enough...

They said that's under construction also though, but I guess we can't know until closer to release.

Of course the general landscape (elevation etc.) is not probably going to change much, but I don't find it unreasonable that some guy's full time job for the next year is to just populate the world with foliage and other objects.

Witcher 3 is a very different game though, Geralt is traveling by foot and by horse so it needs to be more densely packed.

FFXV follows the older FF formula where they overworld is dotted with landmarks to visit, and it's supposed to be a world large enough that you need a car to get around so things are more spread out.

The latter is more realistic and caters to JRPG grinding for better and worse.

Comparing Duscae to Witcher 3, the only thing I can say is.

I really hope they don't try to copy Witcher 3 at all.

Good game or not, that's most definitely not the only way to make an open world game and is definitely not the best. Witcher 3 should be a model for WRPGs and WRPGs only...

I don't think they are that different, basically XV is a traditional WRPG game quest design style without all the advacements the genre did in several years...

I'd have to ask what it is about the environment of Duscae that screams jrpg (or any other environment that they have shown).

In a world wheere everything is plain, maybe.

But compared to this, I'd say is rather dissapointing.

If you're going to compare things at least be fair. You're lining up a castle with a wasteland.

If you want to go castle for castle try this :P!

And you're really going to say, a game about a road trip shouldn't be an open world?

Despite all the recent shitstorm surrounding XV, I still have no doubt that the game as a whole will offer much much more variety in the world and art over something like Witcher 3. Heck most games.

And the big barren land for me personally creates a brilliant atmosphere for the roadtrip vibe that they're going for with game.

Of course I also want areas on the worldmap with higher levels of detail and more magical art and we will probably get that.

Then I'd have to ask where I implied anything like that.

Duscae doesn't "scream" either way. It's a demo, it's there to show you how the game looks and plays. It does that. For better or for worse, it doesn't show how the final game will be beyond gameplay and graphics...

If they are going to do it like they've shown so far, I would rather get a classic (more detailed) world map.

We should at least wait to see more of XV's world, we've barely seen anything outside of the cities and Duscae. Theres still a small wooded area in Duscae so there's got to be more of that somewhere in the world, and hopefully some tropical beaches.

Duscae area was pretty boring. I'd rather have smaller, more interesting locales than generic open world copypasta that's been shown so far.

I guess I'm hinting at the question of what makes the witcher3 open world representative of a wrpg and how would it differ in a jrpg.

My main issue with duscae is the constantly sprinting dog like creatures. That was terrible in xiii gran pulse and it will be terrible here. They definitely need to animate hunting and resting dog creatures. I also hope their spawning isn't as terrible as it was in the demo.

I also think that's kind of a false dichotomy, though. To take the above screenshot, for example, why can't we have an open-world forest, but one that looks like Macalania Woods from FFX or the Evil Forest from FFIX? Good art and open worlds can coexist, IMO. Openness isn't Duscae's problem, it's the fact that it's got fairly boring world art, and I don't think one of those necessitates the other.
