Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

Tactics was a great game. But i wonder how such an art style would even work in current generation graphics.

I would not mind a fully fledged cell shaded title

Would love that, too. They need to start mixing up the art style again.

I've always been in love with Valkyria chronicles artstyle. Something like that but way more advanced to take advantage of current gen graphics would blow my face off and melt my eyeballs down my throat

Famitsu's interview

LMAO, I can't stop laughing at this gif.

I personally really love the look of FF15, but it feels like ever since FF13 Square has been in a race to photo realism. FF7R is going for a very FF15 like look. Even FF14 to some extent pursues this look, though obviously more so in the CG cutscenes. Maybe Visual Works is the problem XD?

I think after a game like FF15, they need to do something very different artistically. I could go for another FF9 style game.

Does the idea of "fantasy based on reality" explain why all the natural environments we've seen so far have been so mundane? Every biome looks like it's just the usual thing I'd see on a trip across America.

I want my crystalline caves and shit.

Ugh, Prompto looks so punchable, more than Sasuke....Noctis.

I mean, come on, looks so much like one of those fake bleached hair asian pop stars. Not quite Gackt-level but uncanny valley territory all the same. I can't tell if his design has gotten better or worse over time.

I really hope they keep the all boys group together and don't unnecessarily break then up through treachery or add any girls to the party halfway through to replace one of them.

They chose it now they have to stick to it.

They'll add female guest characters probably along the way.

Whatever the case, people will complain about there being four males. The genderswap thread was a fine example of that lol.

I'm actually fine with the all-male cast. I just wish they didn't look so freaking awkward and silly fashion model/jpop-idolstar-like

I was never too salty about it being an all male group but, if we're being honest, it's the not the most appealing group of 4 guys. Prompto in particular sticks out like a sore thumb.

.....and a thorn in my side.

Art direction and setting plays an important role on this. I don't mind a little stylized, whimsical character designs with slightly deformed character models ala FFIX, but I simply wish to see mainline FF goes back to the European, Renaissance high fantasy setting again. I want a good racial and gender diversity among the main characters and the world, with humans and non-humans co-existing. I want characters who dress in appropriate outfits suitable to their social standing and occupation. I want characters who dress in outfits suitable to fight in battles and partake in an adventure.

I just wish we had these designs still. Noctis can stay the same but the rest should go back. Fuck the Roen collaboration.

I still look at that picture and expect to hear "Backstreet's back..."

Although both look pretty boybandish, to me that pic looks more of a western boyband image.

What is the Roen collaboration again?

And yeah, that image is somewhat less awkward, but they still look like a boy band. Noctis/Sasuke actually stands out even more in this image from the rest. Hate his design.

I would even have Noctis go half way back to the older design.

Keep the newer jet black/militaristic look of his clothes but restore some of the physicality Noctis exuded in the original trailers.

A clothing brand in Japan called Roen designed the clothes for the main characters.

The concept art via Famitsu is stunning, and all the lore and summon importance within that lore is intriguing. (Loved reading about Leviathan.) Gimme.

Honestly, I think Tabata is forced to keep the costume designs in the game due to whatever contract.

The suits are nice, but everything else isn't.

This was way back in the Versus days. 2010. Totally Nomura. This is the one thing I wish Tabata would change. Unfortunately, he just confirmed that the collaboration is still strong.
Shit, I am so not surprised. Sometimes I cannot help but wonder if Nomura is more interested in Fashion Design than Game Design.

I mean, yeah his background is character art, but I swear he's become more and more obsessed with modern Japanese fashions as the years have gone by than he used to be way way back in the day. His old FF7 art had way more charm and better "aesthetics" than what he's been coming up with lately.

I mean, wasn't Lightning pretty much a vehicle for his take on women's fashion sense? :P

Sucks that this sort of thing is no doubt popular in Japan.

Huh.

Probably posted/mentioned before but apparently Sakaguchi played Duscae 2.0 and called Tabata up to talk about it. Liked it, said it had a lot of work to be done, and thought it was a case of bridging the gap between people who want an RPG and people who want something a bit more active.

Not surprisingly, he said Nomura is so busy with KH3 and FFVIIR now that he's not really kept up to date on XV's progress.

Edit: They also say Altissia (sp?)/Accordo's capital is one of the most important locations in the game and said that while cities etc have real world inspirations there are areas built purely on imagination without photo references etc.

It's seeping into Kingdom Hearts as well. Sora's new design is terrible and obviously has Roen inspiration.

If Nomura is given the freedom to helm another mainline FF and isn't held back, this is how the main party could potentially look like:

Can Square fire Nomura and bring back Sakaguchi? Pleaaaaase?

But then again, they might as well go full crazy like that just to piss off everyone outside of Japan :P

The new design is meant to represent the "Mafia like" look of the kingdom. The new designs are far better than the old ones. The old ones still look fine but again they're going with the "realistic feel"

I'm curious how many would cry "But Nomura's vision!" if he had asked Roen to design a more palatable wardrobe for the leads and toned down the anime aesthetic(I think it's annoying).

Lol then just make him stay away from mainline FF. Why fire one of the most valuable assets of the company.

The vision crap is grating. I don't really care if the designs get changed at this point, but if they did, the whole "vision" narrative would be totally different for sure.

And KH3 Sora is best Sora.

It's what I'd do if he ever came up with designs like that picture :P

Problem is his art has gotten worse as the years have gone on. Too much "realism" and "fashion" aesthetic and not enough creativity, or too much in the wrong places (aka. the "belt" fetish of his).

Tbh I really like Nomura's design in Versus. Roen stuff are hit and miss for me. I like Noctis's outfit but I dislike Prompto and Gladio.

His obsession for Roen does hurt his design though...

I like the mafia theme they were going for, but the costumes do not fit that. I don't mind all the clothes being black or stylized but the skulls, patches, plaid, skirt, Michael Jackson gloves are all stupid. Also considering they changed Regis your point might be moot.

Peak Nomura excess was FFX. If anything he's only gotten more restrained as the years have gone by.

Has Nomura ever said that he used the Yakuza as inspiration? I've never found such an interview.

It's basically implicit IMO. I don't think he needs to state it.. Japanese media showing hard men in business suits driving nice cars is inherently invoking yakuza imagery.

Also, Nomura designs my favorite female characters so I give him a pass.

OG Stella design was the perfect design for me (including the costume)

Let them explore their styles, and let them be Japanese. It's a Japanese company.

Telling them not "be so Japanese" is like going to a Japanese restaurant and asking for a burger and fries. Even if they do cater to your wish, it'll never be great because that's not the kind of stuff they specialize in. If you're going to play a Japanese game, expect it to be Japanese.

Remember the Spirits Within? That's them catering to the West. That was Sakaguchi too.

That's true. It does invoke that imagery, but it just felt like a lot of it was due to Nomura's themes of making Lucis all black to go against Niflheim's white attire.

Not that it makes any difference, though.

Too much budget on the visuals and using a dev team in Hawaii IIRC :P

But in the end it was still a much better film than the fanfic/fanservicey FF7 garbage, IMO.

A) Welcome to FF. B) Welcome to JRPG's. We dont know any of the culture behind the game or even in Lucis. What they wear may seem normal when we get the game and venture through Lucis. They changed the look of Regis 15 years before the game takes place. Regis might be clean shaven and have a hair cut next time we see them. The suits apparently are still in the game as well.

You mean to tell me the little skulls on Noct's shirt piss you off? Or even the one on Cor? I cant explain the "one" glove on Noct. Honestly though again I think it looks fine. When playing the game im not going to think "I cant play this! That one glove I cant take seriously"

Nomura's only design job well done IMO is the original FFVII, Dissidia, original Aya Brea (Parasite Eve), Aqua and Keyblade armor.

Keyblade armor is still quite overdesigned, but alright. Everything else ranges from mediocre to trash.
