I'm disgusted with Eurogamer review. They should be ashamed of themselves for bomb reviewing a game that clearly DOES NOT DESERVE that low of a score that was clearly given for the sake of an agenda that has nothing to do with the quality of the game.
This is more than dishonesty, this is CRUELTY with the developers that worked very hard to create the game. You don't have to like the game, but those passionate developers (so passionate that the music composer battled a cancer while still working) deserve a TRUE REVIEW of their work.

This has me imagining an inverse case, where you'd have, say, Christians controlling games media and docking points off a game's review score for not evangelizing enough in the game. These same people would be crying bloody murder.

Mfw my first FF was VIII so I am pretty open-minded as to what an FF should and shouldn’t be.

So an amazing game?

I am confused.
I thought it was a great game but I bought both the original and the Remaster and both times I couldn't finish it.
I seem to prefer Kitase's FF games.

Yeah to give a literal 6 for that is a problem. From a supposedly “pro reviewer” this is the problem with these aggregates - you have one guy who’s grading it an 8.5 even though for him it’s a 10 (his words) because he feels he has to be more objective. And then this guy who just lets subjective bias run rampant

lol same.

I do have cats though, I work from home, University from home etc.

My favorite thing to do while working, leveling up in some random RPG I'm playing or playing Lumines or Tetris.

Forget Eurogamer, the bastards at Push Square gave the game a 9/10 and they are very harsh with the reviews, a common thing for them would’ve been 7 or 8/10.

Game looks really good but even John complained that it's too easy. Are there difficulty modes?

Funnily enough there are some people on Era right now saying something along the lines of:

"Hey umm, we all know diversity is good and a game should be called out if it doesn't have it. But actually docking points off of a game in a review is bad thing right?"

Yes. Yes it is.
I really don't care about reviews anymore these days and haven't read any, but finding out about the Eurogamer one just sticks out too much. The review itself and score just blatant and it's sad. Makes me think they're salty about their failed boycott on the game using Era.

Rather than scores or awards, I only hope the player base proves critics wrong and it sells a ton. I can't let FF lose its winning streak it's building back up.

I definitely understand that. For me the gameplay was so addictive in FFXII and setting up the perfect gambits to make fights as easy as possible. Lots of customization for that. The narrative was actually the weakest point for me as it felt like the core story was so short. Would have loved to see them flesh it out a bit more.

Like if they wanted to hate the game for what was in the game? Fine. Go ahead. But when they try to criticize a game for things unrelated to the final product? That is when there is an issue.

Yes, there are multiple difficulty modes - but many are locked unti lafter you beat the game a first time. Basically you can play level 1-50 in one playthorugh and 51-100 in another. The second playthorugh, Final Fantasy mode gives you completely new enemy placements and mini bosses as well as making everything much more difficult to fight. Beating that unlocks Ultimania mode which I know nothing about.

Yes, exactly. That has nothing to do with the game, go waste your time writing your articles elsewhere but judge the game on its own merit. It's the same with some saying "It's not FF7R's combat" "It's not turn-based" Ok... but that is not a crticism of the battle system, it's just you whining. What is wrong with the game's system? etc etc.

Just more points to not take gaming journalism seriously. I can make fun of Famitsu as well, but at least the summary I read from Famitsu had to do with the game itself and they kept it to that experience.

It’s a bad joke. These people are trying to appease to L.A whites and they don’t even know it.

NG+ has Final Fantasy Mode which is the difficulty the game was designed at as said by the staff, it unlocks item synthesizing, upgrade limits go to 6 tiers for mastery, level cap is raised to 100, the enemy AI changes, mid bosses and monsters are different, etc. In that they have a harder Ultimaniac mode, as well.

Thanks, but damn it's dumb to lock the difficulty behind completing the game. Just make it available from the start and if it's too hard, let us switch it back? God of War doesn't even let you get out of GMGOW but at least it's available from the start.

Yeah, I copped a 3 day ban for pretty much saying that too - good times.

Just another day fighting the good fight lol.

In FFXVI related news, I'm at 10 hours played now since release (I'm in NZ), literally played 12am-10am holy shit....and it's a 9.5 all day so far for me. The story/characters are next level, just getting the hang of the combat fully now too; 4 hours sleeps enough, back into it fam! lol (lucky I run the company I work for, or I'd be fired as fuck I'm guessing).

Reminds me of WIRED’s bogus 1/10 review of Hogwarts Legacy that had nothing to do with the game, where the author spent the entire article ranting her past with the Potter franchise and her recent hate of JK Rowling. She discussed nothing of the game in the game “review” and purposely gave it a low score to counter the high scores the game was rightfully earning.

Just like WIRED, Eurogamer has completely lost all respect and credibility for pushing this trash out and calling it a “review” when it’s anything but.

Yeah right now there's a lot of back and forth going on over there in their FFXVI Review thread. And it ain't just one person calling this behavior out, it's several.

I'm a little annoyed you have to equip this ring to put Torgal on autopilot. They seriously expect me to normally give the dog a command to do every little thing while also fighting in this combat system?

I don't understand why this shit is locked to beating the game first. Game seems super handholdy too. They don't trust the players or what?

Game isn't handholdy. It can get challenging and Final Fantasy mode was designed specifically for a second playthrough. That would be like asking why do you not get NG+1 or +2 in Dark Souls from the start.

Reviews look pretty great despite not hitting 90 on metacritic. In-store physical copies are completely sold out in my area. Gonna be really interesting to see first week sales for easily the biggest PS5-only exclusive since 2020. FF7 Remake sold 3.5 million in 3 days on a much a larger install base. I think 2.5 million in a week would be really solid, and 3 million is probably the internal target for Square Enix.

I am aware of this. Started as. Are the series’ most beloved entries DND inspired? Is that what the series is known for? No. That’s my point.

I just have to accept that CBU3 doesn’t produce games for me. And I’m glad that this game basically didn’t perform better critically compared to FFVIIR (XVI: 88, VIIR: 87 Intergrade: 89) and now the FF fans more partial towards CBU3 can stop being condescending and smug about how XVI will be the template for the series’ future because it’ll be a huge critical darling (sorry, I’m feeling petty).

But my post also represents the problem with current FF: it’s too long of a wait between entries, and NO feature is safe. Anything and everything can be removed in the next entry. So, of course, that’ll lead to more fighting amongst fans. I’d love to be that fan that goes with the flow and loves every entry but I’m not. I go into FF expecting certain things. Which is normal. It is very normal to have expectations.

But also I apologize as this post is essentially me rambling.

Final fantasy fans are fighting for decades, its not like any release where ever safe and yes CBU 3 proved that they know what Final fantasy is about through

Look a 90+ would've been cool to look at, but take a look at these games that all scored in the 85-89 range:

  • Nier Automata
  • Spiderman PS4
  • Dark Souls
  • Sekiro
  • Doom/Doom Eternal
  • Dragon Quest IX
  • FFVII Remake
  • Devil May Cry 5

That's to name a few in the past several years.

Point being the vast majority of games, even the great ones, don't manage to crack 90+. Simply put, it takes a looooot of 9s and 10s to keep it above 90. But it only takes a small handful of 6 and 7s to drag it under. Making a game, especially one such as this that takes a lot of risks, had a lot working against it to achieve that 90+. The JRPG genre very rarely sees over a 90+ anyway, and the diversity bullshit guaranteed a few clowns having a chip on their shoulder.

FFXVI could end up 87 or 86 in the end, and still be considered one of the all time greats by fans. Even new comers to the series. Plus the general consensus, even amongst detractors, is that it's one of the best action games made.

So don't let the few detractors get you down. The game is almost out, so enjoy yourselves.
Ironic that almost half of those games are Square Enix.

Pokemon Arceus doesnt have turn base combat. But sure, Scarlet/Violet had.

Tho I think that Pokemon is so big that the combat could play like Pong and it would still sell tons of copies.

Anyway, back on topic: could only play the game for 2H so far, but pacing has been ace
