I assume it's because the most common action is to open in a new tab rather than a new window, so they've moved it up accordingly.

i kinda made me mad at first too but i guess its because people open new pages in tabs more than opening new windows, so they made it the first choice. it makes sense but for people who have used firefox for a long time, they will be mad at first

I'll test that and see if it affects anything.

Just to give a reason why this bugs me, I gave up on FF a while back because of its bloat, and one of the things I was always having to do was maintain how much crap it loaded (such as addons, etc). I like to run it nice and lean. :)

It's probably because you can open in a new tab by pressing the middle mouse button.

Anyway, use keyboard shortcuts for those things. It's faster. Shift + left mouse opens in a new window, and either middle mouse button or ctrl + left mouse opens in a new tab.
 
Is there any way to remove the embossed button look in firefox 4? I much prefer the button insets from chrome... maybe a theme someone can recommend?
 
FF4 gpu bug made me uninstall it. It was fun the last 3 years. Now i am using Chrome with adblock+, smoothscroll and neat bookmarks. It felt as functional as FF4 without the wild gpu clock swings. Gpu acceleration now works only when it is needed to. This is awesome! :)

Now i just need to view full history, what is it with Google mixing tabs and settings into one and the lack of customization?
 
I've gone back to 3.6, was using twice as much memory on my Macbook and the flash plug-in kept on crashing. On my windows xp machine it's crashing every time i use it and not even getting the crash pop-up most of the time, will try turning off hardware acceleration maybe.
 
There's just 1 little problem with the extention: when I don't use the default button look, the refresh/stop button because 2 separate buttons for a fraction of a second when loading pages, making the whole lay-out switch back and forth.

But perhaps that's only with me though. I'd actually like the refresh/stop button to be integrated in the right side of the URL bar again, but ever since messing with the look of the browser, I haven't been able to do this.

Clicking customise and then dragging the buttons across to the other side doesn't work? I've just tried it and it seems fine.

Yeah, should've just kept on messing before posting. I did a "restore to default" first, and then step by step customized again, and I think it'll work now.

Edit: yep, works. This extension is awesome!


I also disabled the add-on now that makes the Firefox button transparent, because the Stratoform one takes care of that as well. I actually wanted the button to be only semi-transparent, and have it still have a hint of orange in it. Et voila!
(lol, I'm really not that anal about the look of my browser, it's just that there's so many options now :))
 
This was probably asked at some point, but is there a way to disable the little icons on my bookmarks toolbar? I had tons of bookmarks that have spilled off-screen since the update :(

That's not what I mean. What I'm saying is that if you tune the built-into-Win7 cleartype, you calibrate it for what looks right. I'm not calibrating the entire thing to fit FF4, since it's going to make my fonts in Word, explorer, and everything else look funny.

The thing is though for me just tuning it for everything "fixed" it in firefox as well. Just essentially "retuning" it.

And considering it applies the same anti-aliasing to all fonts in the system, if it were to look bad in firefox post-config, it would look bad in everything else as well.

This. Forefox does not seem to apply the Cleartype settings that are preexisting in Win 7. So when you re-run it system wide, it applies to all programs, including Firefox. That does not mean you have to change the result or the look, only that it triggers application of the settings in FF. Its weird, but from what people are posting, this seems to be the issue.
 
DirectWrite is such a piece of shit.

So I re-enabled direct2d again and readjusted my cleartype
I didn't change anything, it looked fine the way it was before...
. I even installed the AA Tuner add-on (I set small and large font AA modes to cleartype and contrast/cleartype levels to 100%), and it STILL looks funny on some sites. GAF is one of them. I think it's just going to come down to the way fonts are rendered and the fonts that a site decides to use.

I think this the closest I'm going to get with leaving hardware acceleration and DirectWrite enabled. I have the same problem in Steam, but I'm not reading text within Steam like I do reading things in an internet browser. Microsoft needs to fix something on their end...

I originally hated it too, but now I love the way it aligns with the navigation buttons so the tab is directly inline with the url bar -

went back to 3.6.16 :-/

not sure what's going on with 4 but it slows down a lot when I'm watching gifs or a big smilie list in other forums. tried it with hardware acceleration on and off and tried different drivers. it's crazy, i can watch 1080p videos and i can play crysis on very high but some smilies slow down my browser? lol yeah right...

it also still has a huge memory leak.

back to 3.6.16 and everything is fine :)

That's great. However, it's missing options to change the current tab's color and the gray color when tabs are hovered. It'll be nice if the dev also allows us to change the opacity of the navigation toolbar.

I really wanted to have the Chrome-style, but there's too much space between buttons.

Also, what's with all the S icons? :P

Another great modification. This is exactly what Firefox should have done by default. However, it needs a bit more space above tabs when the option is set to reduce the height.
 
Haven't gotten around to getting this yet (plus my current computer is a piece of shit), but how is the CSS3 support? Transforms, transitions (what can and can't be transitioned), gradients, shadows, etc?

I recommend gmail notifier + over any browser plug-in, so that you don't have to be looking at that corner of your browser, which means you have to have your browser open, to see that you have mail. It puts a gmail icon on the taskbar and displays a count of unread messages and a a preview of each message using the thumbnail W7 feature. It can also be made to play a sound when you get new mail.

This happens to the mini GAF logo every single time GAF hiccups a 503 error. I have to restart to see the image again and it's only GAF that does this. Does this happen to anybody else?

Are you referring to the favicon disappearing? This happens to me as well, an alternative solution is just clearing your cache

Ah OK, thanks.

Edit: Clearing the cache didn't help, only a restart. Thanks anyway. I know it's not a big deal, ha, but when I have a lot of tabs open it becomes harder to distinguish certain web sites.

Not sure, but you can get rid of them - just go to customize toolbar layout and drag the buttons off.

Anyways, since everyone is posting it, with Stratiform I've finally been able to get Firefox's top bar to look cohesive, check it out:

I especially like that, using Stratiform, I can get it to just say "Secure" when I'm over an SSL connection instead of needlessly spelling out the details across the address bar:

In conclusion, FF4 is growing on me as I find the sort of addons that aren't possible in Chrome. And the speed difference between the two is negligible at this point...other than start up time, where Firefox is still clearly a bit slower. Worth it for the kickass extensions, though.
 
How do I change the address bar's default search engine, and make it not ASK.com? I don't mean the search engine bar in the top right, but the main address bar. Whenever I switch from Chrome, I find myself typing search terms in there, and Ask.com is the generic search engine. Sucks.

type about:config into the address bar and accept the warning that comes up

I think what you're looking for is browser.search.defaultenginename

right-click it and choose Modify. Type "Google" or whatever you want as the value.

(I could be wrong, I think that's what you were asking)
