I've never experienced this, so to test it I just clicked the X to close and then immediately clicked my FF shortcut. It loaded with no problem. I then tried again with six tabs open and it said FF was already running, but when I closed that and reclicked the shortcut it loaded. So in my experience we're talking like one second of wait time.
It's definitely something many people experience with FF though. It still occasionally happens for me with FF4. However, it only seems to happen when you want to restart the browser because of a specific reason. For example: too many tabs open and the memory gets out of hand, or when a certain plug-in crashes. So it mainly occurs when you're already experiencing a little trouble, so your random test with closing/opening probably won't trigger the problem.

Then again, in FF4 it's far less prevalent as in the previous versions. It used to be so that FF seemed to be running all the damn time and a process shutdown via task manager was often necessary. If your pc had just booted and you wanted to start FF, it often happened that the firefox.exe process was already running, but the browser never opened, which forced you to close down the process as well. But since FF4 is far more responsive and snappy this doesn't happen anymore.

I've noticed some really, really high memory usage numbers lately. Last night it got as high as 1.7GB with only ~10 tabs open. Today I launched it with the same number of tabs as last night and it started off around 600MB... now it's slowly climbed to over 1GB.

Probably an extension you have installed? I've had Firefox open for about a day now with 15 tabs at memory usage is at 301,571K.

Extension I have installed:

Adblock
webmail notifier

Any UI tweaks I always do via userChrome.css

OS: Win 7 SP1 64bit

Anyone know how to get rid of this button on the far right of the bookmarks toolbar?
d4cC5.jpg

Complete waste of space with the bookmarks button I have on the main toolbar
When you go to the customize settings press the Restore Default Set button. It may help.

On the Mac, whenever I try to move my bookmarks bar next to the address location bar the rightmost bookmark becomes auto-hidden (behind the >> symbol). It doesn't matter if I remove bookmarks or shrink labels, one bookmark always becomes hidden. Any solution to this?

^ Try to restore the defaults and change the items again. Other than that I don't know.

I have a great collection of extensions and have 33 tabs open, though many of those are images. Its current memory usage is about 650K.

After customizing Firefox 4 for a bit, I must say that it's grown on me. While I still think Chrome is my favorite all-around browser, Firefox 4 does have some advantages. For one, it displays certain fonts better than Chrome, and Adblock Plus is able to block video ads in Firefox. Also, Firefox 4 supposedly uses less battery than most other browsers.

Videos load slower then all hell for me since I downloaded 4. It didn't use to to it when i had 3.6, so if anybody knows a fix it would be appreciated.

it's probably flash.

install a flash blocking add-on.

I have about 40 tabs open and I'm using the same amount of RAM you are with 10 tabs open.

I think Flash is relegated to plugin-container.exe, which in his case is using 32MB.

What a piece of CRAP!
I can't delete the addon "Cookie Monster"
I disable the addon & restarted, but it was still in effect.
So I removed it & restarted, it's still in effect.

I re-downloaded it & removed it again & still it's in my Firefox!

Help.

Probably been mentioned but how do you get the browser to always keep your opened tabs saved when you close it? It was always automatic in 3.X but here it only does that when you switch to private browsing first. Liking everything else so far. The look and feel fits perfectly into Windows 7.

Downloading right now. Which is more secure Chrome or Firefox?

Chrome. But it depends on what you're talking about. Tabs, extensions, plugins, malicious website detection (although I think they're both based on Google's lists.)

Firefox is refusing to save any of my passwords.

Anyone know why?

That's a werird problem, but I use a program called LastPass, it saves all passwords and you can set it to automatically log you in sites you visit as well.

I tried that but the tabs doen't 'move' to the left when the FirefoxAppButton becomes smaller, so there is one big space between them =/
It should if you re-maximize the window. The tabs won't automatically change position in response to a change in the app button.

Just found another glitch.

Videos are automatically saved & not asking me where to save them (even though I have that option check in the options menu).
Also it seems when a video/file is finished, it automatically plays.

This almost caused me... problems at work.

Go to options and check the applications tab, you might have accidentially set a certain filetype to open automatically (for the download pop-up to appear the filetype should be set to "Always ask").

Is there a way to remove the meebo bar on sites but still use meebo the website with firefox?
You could probably just add meebo's website as a whitelisted page in adblock so that nothing on that page gets blocked.

It sounds like your settings are not being saved at all. Something may be wrong with your profile.

why would I not want that? It can be really practical.

I have one browser window dedicated to college websites. So, e.g., one tab for every class I've taken this semester, one tab for every course I consider taking next semester, ...
Makes around 30 tabs.

So I have all the college stuff in one place where I can easily find it. I don't have to organize or manage bookmarks for all those tabs. They are just there whenever I need them. Also, it wouldn't make much sense to bookmark every website of a course I might be interested in.

Then I'm trying to learn some Android programming. For that I also have a dedicated window with lots of tabs. For example for various tutorials and online-documentation. All that is easily accessible and just as I left it, whenever I need it.

Leaving everything open is just the most convenient way to do it. There isn't much of a downside to that.

Just a little tidbit to make your setup even better: enable the Gmail Labs feature that places an unread count on your Gmail app icon. It's awesome!

Turn off hardware acceleration or tune ClearType.

How did you get it grey and not with a blue tint? Only way I managed that was using a different windows theme, but you are using the default one, looking at the titlebars.

How do you make Greasemonkey work? I used it for he GAF live thread script but since updating to Firefox 4 I haven't figured out how to make it work.

You can also enable the mail count in gmail labs and it adds a small number on the bottom of the icon. Best solution IMO.

After reverting back to 3.6 initially, my 3.6 profile went completely bonkers the other night so I've made the jump to 4 permanently, starting from afresh.

Got to say I like it, but having to search for solutions to get it to ask to remember tabs and change the keywordURL for a Google search is pretty silly. No Status Bar is pretty strange as well.

Also, the location bar not searching your history like it does when you've copied across your 3.x history is (or was) also pretty annoying.

Still, it's more stable at least. Haven't had a crash yet.

I've tried that on mine, but for some reason it only updates infrequently. I've gone for hours with either my mail all read or new messages in my box but the count on the favicon remains unchanging. I've found Tab Badge works much better.

I enabled it recently, too, and it seems to be so-so.

The other alternative is to use a Greasemonkey script. I use for Google Voice. If you click on that guy's avatar or username you can find one for GMail and various others.

My Windows theme has clear window borders, and my desktop wallpaper is grey.

I use the Gmail Favicon Alerts 3 userscript for that. It looks nicer than the Gmail Labs option.

Okay, so I have run into an annoying little problem with the Toolbar Appmenu Button extension. It was working perfectly before, and the picture below is how it looked maximized.

firefox4topbar.jpg

As you can see, the leftmost tab was completely flush with the edge of the browser. I also had the "Shrink Titlebar" feature enabled, which made non-maximized windows show the tabs in the titlebar like how it looks when maximized.

Now, I can't remember what I changed, but the extension isn't working properly anymore. The "Shrink Titlebar" feature no longer works at all, and there is an annoying little space before the leftmost tab when maximized. See the picture below for how it looks when maximized.

firefoxtopbarspace.jpg

Would anyone know how to fix this? I've tried enabling/disabling the extension, reinstalling it completely, deleting the extension file manually from the App Settings/Roaming folder... etc. Each time I reinstall the extension, it keeps the settings from before, which I think is part of the problem.

Is there any way to completely remove an extension to the point where its settings will be completely stock upon reinstalling it?

I think you can go to the profile folder and look for the add-on in the extensions folder to erase them. Did you try to Restore To Default?

I made sure there were no remnants left in the prefs.js file or my Profile folder. No matter what I do, the extension's settings are always preserved when I reinstall it.
