Firesprite - Heavily impacted by SIE and PS Layoffs

Update that thread title, the studio is not shutting down.

This is simply a message to the staffers let go in February following the cancellation of the Twisted Metal project.
Have they even really shipped a game under PS?
Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Their next project, in the making since 2020, is seemingly an Until Dawn sequel of some sorts.

The kanji in the name is peak cringe. It's a British studio. Sony shut down its Japanese studios and replaced them with the gaming equivalent of an MMA bro with a random Chinese character etched on their chest.

It seems everybody today wanna pretend to be japanese.

It's Katakana not kanji but agree with you man, it's peak cringe for western weebs to use this.

Well, in their beginnings Firesprite were usual collaborators of Japan Studio, particularly the Team Asobi, in both The Playroom (2013) and The Playroom VR (2016).

Also, over its last decade the Japan Studio was run by the former head and founder of Santa Monica Studio and two of their five internal development teams were headed by Western creative directors, so at that point I'd say their true Japanese-ness as an organization wasn't as pure as the internet Japan Studio crybabies would otherwise let you to believe. Hell, their last major project was actually a remake co-developed with an American studio from Austin, Texas.

People need to stop posting misleading thread titles and outright misinformation.

The studio isn't shutting down. They've done a reorg and let some people go. This is just a message acknowledging that.

It's not random characters, it's the studio name written in katakana.

nothing wrong with accountability; which this is what it sounds like. If you're too hands off with your studios you end up with trash like redfall.

I don't even know how you get that they're closing out of that tweet. Being an ESL is not an excuse.
In OPs defense, they probably saw this typical social media image with a couple walls of text on the inside, noticed that the first sentence mentioned redundancies, assumed that the rest of the text revolved around an announcement of the studio's closure and just went to make the thread in a rush in order to not get beaten at it by Thick Thighs Save Lives Thick Thighs Save Lives 🚬

Yeah the tweet almost sounds like the opposite. That they didn't want to say anything until the 'consultancy' period was over because more jobs or perhaps the whole studio were on the line. Now the sword of damocles has been lifted they can give their condolences.

Tbf, I always try to double check the stuff I'm posting about before pressing the submit new thread button. :P

People on GAF were crying around 2012/2013 about them not being Japanese enough due to Puppeteer.

I feel they should really remove the Katakana subscript from their logo. They are based in fucking Liverpool.

I think the CEO should be grilled on his knowledge of Japanese culture. If we judge him to be an expert, then we will grant them our blessing to use Katakana in their logo.

It's not kanji, unless I am missing something. It's the script used to write foreign words.

They may have designed it as an acknowledgement of the Japanese roots of their parent company.

We already have a lot of fake/misleading gaming "jounalists". Do we also need to start fake/misleading threads for engament?

Very old news. But well, let's hope the fired ones got a new job soon elsewhere.

1. Consolidate
2. Don't release games
3. ?????
4. Profit

They released Horizon Call of the Mountain under Sony, and they were (I assume they don't work there anymore) one of the support teams of Star Citizen.

They worked for Sony even before the acquisition in The Playroom (where Astro Bot appeared for the first time), Run Sackboy Run!, plus in the PSVR games Air Force Special Ops: Nightfall and The Persistance.

Many of their devs came from having worked for Sony before at Liverpool Studio/XDEV Europe, Evolution or Supermassive. And from Bizarre Creation + obviously young new talent.

In recent years they have been working on a MP game (apparently the cancelled Twisted Metal) and in a horror narrative adventure that I'd bet it's an Until Dawn (or The Persistence) sequel.

Even if they're from Liverpool they worked in several projects for Sony, and I think their logo is super cool in this way.

I think we all know where MM, Haven, Neon Koei and Firesprite will be in 2 years from now.
Yes: making games inside Sony, as they are now.

It's unlikely Sony will shut doen Firesprite, they would more likely become a support studio
They simply cancelled a game and fired some people. They'll continue working on new games as they did before, some in a support position and others in a lead position.

It harks back to a core part of the studios origins with strong links to Psygnosis - and one of their key titles Wipeout - https://www.thedesignersrepublic.com/wipeout - Katakana was strongly used in the games design and linked to the futuristic world the game was set in.
