Firewatch's PS4 performance is terrible

Speaking for PC, update 1 and 2 seem to have resolved my stutter. The framerates could have been higher for the kind of game this is, but at least I'm always over 30fps.

Was gonna buy this with the PS+ discount before I heard about the issues. Unfortunate. Waiting until the problems are resolved to buy the game.

I haven't really watched much Firewatch media because I didn't want to spoil anything, but from what I saw the graphics looked clean, but pretty simple. Is it a huge open world or something? I really didn't expect it to run this poorly.

Day two of being stuck. Giving myself motion sickness trying to get my game back into a playable state.

I gave the developers the benefit of a doubt despite all the complaints and I'm definitely regretting it now.

Stay far away from this game until a patch is released and even then I'd wait a few days..

EDIT
Devs say the issue is impossible to fix and recommend restarting. So frustrating. Shame there's no chance of a refund. Not thrilled to repeat the experience given the poorly thought out save game system and likely repeat buggy experience. That being said, kudos to Jane for her response to refunds on steam..if I could get a refund if do just that (gift someone a copy when it did in price)

Their forums say they can't due to encryption.

PS+ didn't help either sadly.. No save game at all there.

EDIT
I think I'll wait for the patch before restarting. Good to hear they realized they made a massive mistake with the save system.

The framerate is very weird and jerky, and the worst performance I've seen on PS4 thus far. I also had the game lock up on me entirely, but that didn't cause too much of a problem.

I wouldn't have too much faith in the devs improving the frame rate much if they're relying on Unity and Sony to offer a lot of tech support. Maybe in a couple of months they'll improve things a bit.

Great to hear, was a bit saddened by the performance impressions but bought the game anyway. This War of Mine has kept me busy this week, so i didnt mind waiting. Will be starting soon!

Same amount to be honest and no FOV slider.

Try doing a database rebuild and see if that clears some of it up. Otherwise who knows what's going on. They kept saying a lot of the problems had to do with the engine itself and wasn't something they could really fix. I bet the update just adjusted the autosaves a bit and fixed some lod stuff.

Woop! Downloading now! 3.1GB

Update: Still getting stuttering and pop ups.
They probably (well hopefully) fixed the game crashing bugs. That's after all more important, and also something that they can fix on their own.

I really hope the Unity update they are applying really does something to make the multithreading work better, like what they suggested. That should hopefully improve the framerate.

Cool, I hope the patch improves a lot.

My playthrough last week honestly went so bad that the whole game left a bad taste in my mouth (or at least I wasn't in the mood to enjoy their specific plot anymore).

Day1: Freeze during loading

Day77 or something: The whole fucking landscape was acting out and stopped me from exploring and even made it hard to find my way to the objectives.

Basically everything was covered with an extra layer of ground. Luckily I could walk through it because even restarting the game didn't fix this Oo

Last day right before the ending: Another Freeze

All combined with the wonky framerate and major popins (in certain areas you can make the whole landscape pop in) and jank with some items I picked up.

I will let a lot of time pass and maybe play it again with different choices to see if it the improved game will make me enjoy it more. But basically due to that condensed time you play it, it felt now more buggy than my F4 platinum playthrough...

patched, played a bit. not super smooth but feels like a huge improvement.
controls still feel wonky but that might just be how they are. is it locked to 30fps now?

i think it's in a playable state for me now

That's promising, I think we were pretty much on the same page about it earlier.

Please keep us posted as you progress!

They definitely did cap the frame rate to 30. Feels much smoother and overall more responsive because of the consistency. Pop-in has also been noticeably reduced. For reference, I beat the game the day it came out.

Ok.....I think it may be finally time to buy this. I don't have any plans for the next couple days, so this would be great to play.

Guys...should I go for it??? I've wanted this since launch!!

For sure, it's very enjoyable to play through! Not sure about replayability, although I'm starting a new playthrough where I'm just going to be a dick to anyone and everything. The dialogue is the best for a video game in a while for me and is the main reason for the game getting my attention way back when it was first shown. Also, I'd recommend checking out the bundle for the game that comes with the theme. It's probably the nicest looking game related theme on PS4 right now.

If I was on PS4, I'd still hold off.

Have you played it since the patch was implemented?

Yeah, that theme looks amazing! I'll definitely go for the bundle.

Not according to Eurogamer:
Based on my experience they did cap it.

I did a whole article and video of the game for today...and now I have to re-do the whole thing as they implemented the two things that I suggested would fix it.

Just buy it, it won't go on sale for a while and you're obviously eager to play it.

If it doesn't meet your personal technical standard, you can just stop playing and continue later.

That's what I'm doing. But I'm giving the new patch a go this weekend.

For real? You've said before it would be near-impossible to fix the framerate, right? Did they pull it off?

It was pretty clear to me that capping at 30fps fix most of the issues - and I was right. It did. I don't think they could hit 60fps, however. Unfortunately, most Unity games are not so lucky.

That's great to hear.

On a side note, did they remove the camera acceleration or make it optional in this patch?

I don't know if it's still as annoying without the framerate dips, but I'd like to see it gone regardless.

Just tried it with the patch, it definitely runs well enough for me to start playing now. They seem to have capped it at 30fps and I think they've toned down the horizontal acceleration. The controls are still my biggest gripe, though. There needs to be a sensitivity slider and looking vertically feels like the character has a stiff neck or something.
