This is better than I had ever imagined in my wildest dreams. I have full faith that Rocket's voice is going to be amazing based on how perfect he looks.

This has Scott Pilgrim-level flop written all over it. Extreme Internet and geek hype but little mainstream attention which could translate to a 15 million dollar opening weekend.

This is one of those times I really feel out of the pop culture loop, I love comics and comic movies but I literally have never heard of any of these characters or this series before I heard there was a movie coming out. Not saying it won't be good or fun but just doesn't look like something that the average filmgoer is going to go "oh yeah, Rocket Raccoon!" When they drop the trailer in theaters.

It's all going to fall on what opens up against it, a hit comedy could throw this movie a huge curveball.

Disney is going to push it mad. Marvel Cosmic is the next stepping stone after the current crop of super heroes and the key to keep the MCU alive.

How can you even compare the two? You realize it IS Disney Marvel right? The Marvel universe is straight up bank right now and this movie will be marketed to hell. It will not flop.

Scott pilgrim didn't have the Marvel name besides it. Also the marketing for SP sucked.

Scott Pilgrim was some keenspot shit that some how fooled somebody into thinking people wanted to see it.

This is Marvel.

Wasn't Fox having all kinds of problems with the FF reboot? IIRC they need a fresh movie in really short order or the rights will revert to Marvel. They already lost Daredevil and Punisher.

Nope. Market it as an action-comedy/Avengers in space and you've got a golden ticket. Especially if they play up the connections with Thanos at all, people will be intrigued.

This is Marvel.

Playing devils advocate for a second: This could also harm the movie. I can see a bunch of clueless dude bros and parents saying "Marvel? Where is Iron Man, Captain America and Thor??"

People have been saying this for every Marvel film release, and are always proven wrong.

People keep failing to understand what kept Scott Pilgrim from breaking out. It's not because "nerds love it" or whatever, it's the reverse; it was so in love with geek culture and the like that it suffocated any chance of appealing to an audience beyond 20-something white people with heavy 80s nostalgia, despite having some pretty universal themes that were well done.

GotG has a cult fandom amongst nerds, but the source material is a stone's throw from Star Wars. It'll be fine.

Oh crap. I came in here to see set pictures. I walk out a changed man. I HAVE SEEN ROCKET RACCOON! HE LOOKS EPIC!

Hnnnng. Most shocking plot twist ever in a GAF thread for me hahaha.

The fact that people would now be asking "Where is Thor?" should show how good they are at making something relatively unknown to mainstream audiences into a wanted commodity.

This guy gets it.

Is there any recommended reading for Guardians of the Galaxy? I'd like to get acquainted with the series but have no clue where to start.

I think accessibility is the key to whether this film lives or dies. Introduce the audience to the cosmic side of this universe gradually.

Ideally, they need to make the banter between the characters a huge focus as well.

yup. it is stupid to think otherwise at this point. Now maybe if they tried doing a squirrel girl movie, maybe that would flop. but probably not.
