first reactions to the Xbox360 ?

Amazing how some of you are so quick to cling to the slightest bit of negativity. PD0 looked beyond subpar IMO. But the MAJORITY of games shown look great along with the console itself.

and people suddenly forget E3 is just a couple days away where we'll get just a *tad* more info than we got from the MTV special. lol.

but, this is a first reactions thread. :p

My initial reaction was, "Why are they showing a Tony Hawk game for the Xbox when this is supposed to be about the Xbox 360."

Then I saw some other games and I was like, "Fuck, get on with it. Let's see the shit for the Xbox 360."

Then the credits rolled.

These games are the porting from XBOX, so what do you expect!!

I didn't expect them to be Xbox ports for starters. Rare have had FOREVER to build these games from scratch for next-gen systems. There's absolutely NO excuse for what they're showing here. They've had as much time with actual hardware as Epic and the 99 Nights guys etc.

I honestly expected PD0 to be the best looking FPS yet, even if not by a wide margin. I'm pretty sure everyone else did too.

I'll wait for a price drop at the earliest. Personally, I can't wait to see what Nintendo/Sony show because I don't care for PC games or FPS's. Laughed my ass off at how bad some of the games look.

Kameo looked nicer than PD0, and a crap games like Ghost Recon and Test Drive looked the best? I'd like to see what real developers like Namco, Capcom, etc can do with the system. But I think their main focus will be the PS3.

I don't care for Halo either, so I simply can wait and see what the others have.

Im not short sighted. Bash the game all you want, i know the game will look better near launch. Kameo looks awesome

Looks like a good launch to me. I am hopeful PD0 will improve in graphics and have some amazing gameplay, but you never know. I think a lot of people initially were dissapointed with PD0 and that tainted their initial impressions, but overall I am very excited about what the 360 is going to offer. I can't wait to see what some good devs do with 3 cores, 512 mb and 48 unified pipelines - because you know the stuff we are seeing now is all running on old dev kits.
Good recap. I guess you need a lame Kessen and A-train "game" at launch to appeal to GAF zealots.

720p alone & live on every game is notable also.

xbox 360 needs bc to bridge the gap until the quality titles start hitting. Otherwise it'll be a still birth. It's fine that they want beat the competition to the start but they have to support the launch with good games, hell at least one good game would be enough. Look at what Halo did for the xbox.

Launch is 6 months away....

XBox fans need to chill, the same would be happening if sony or nintendo had a similar showing. Im sure you guys will have your time for bashing. I mean nintendo gets it all year around, a couple of days fun isn't a big deal. When nintendo reveals a pink Revolution with a handle you guys can laugh all you want :D

Question: is enforcing 720p one of the causes of these underwhelming-looking games? It must cause a hit on the processor that would otherwise be freed up for more geometry/effects/etc? And we can't see the high res in these screenshots and compressed vids either.

Yeah but 6 months away from xbox launch everyone in the world knew about Halo. it drove sales much higher then anyone expected. The 360 needs something like that. I hoped that PD0 was gonna do it but it's obviously not. I have no doubt that the system will be killer once the games start comoing out for it but launch is what's crucial for the casual gamers. Us hardcores own every system anyway, the casuals need that wow holy shit factor. And so far it aint there. But if they could play their favorite kickass xbox games it'll be a much smoother transition

After seeing some of the footage I'd say it's an average showing. I'm more excited to see what Sony and Nintendo show, cause I think it'll be more interesting. Most likely I'll pass on the 360.

What a waste. PD0 was definitely not ready for prime time. Some of the clips they showed had promise, but overall i wasn't wowed at all.

I think I'm going to drop a message to MS' PR to see what they think about the whole unveiling.

Expect Peter Moore to be leaving Microsoft "to pursue other opportunities". That MTV was the worst unveiling I've ever seen. The ourcolony was better, stilted as it was.

My initial impression was: meh.

I honestly expected more out of "next generation" graphics. Even the best look doable on a top flight PC. I don't expect a ton more out of the PS3 either, but this is the smallest graphical change we've ever seen between generations.

I call too soon. I know many of you are ready to jump headlong into better graphics, but 2 more years would have done wonders. I was concerned for the PS2 in that the "next" gen could steal all the buzz from this current generation, but I think that that ain't going to happen. The next 12 months of the PS2 look to be in pretty good shape.

The Xbox360 will be successful, moreso than the Xbox. However, I think Microsoft HAS TO BE DISAPPOINTED. They have a ton more tricks up their sleeves, but the idea that they would need to cash them in this early, or to counter a lackluster premiere has got to seem like wasted opportunity.

Yesterday was like a fucking rollercoaster for the X360. Way too many WTF moments and the PD0 screenshots were so incredibly bad that they hurt my brain. But there were some brilliant looking games shown among the crap.

Those two in particular get me excited.

I can't seem to find the PD0 screenies anywhere.

Gears of War does look impressive. I am glad that is getting exposure.

Anyone that thought devs like EA and Activision would pull out all the stops and put out some amazing footage (when they can't even put out considerably visually appealing stuff THIS gen) fully deserves the disappointment they got.

Like every system early on, it has some lazy devs that drag it down. But it's quite obvious from stuff like Gears of War that there's a lot of power and a lot of potential.

I won't buy it at launch, but that's nothing new for me, I always wait.

I was really excited for xbox 360 yesterday

Now the door is open for Sony to knock my socks off.

I mean.. wallman?? Wtf was that? He looked like an n64 model with a bucket on his head!

6 months prior to xbox launch Halo was being written of as a disappointment just as PD0 is now...

Right around now is when Bungie released the vid of the beach level in Halo and the gaming world collectively went ape shit. Then after E3 it was a sealed deal. The xbox was gonna have a killer launch title. There is non of that happening this time. Hopefully I'm wrong and at E3 MS will drop a nice sized bomb but for now the launch isn't looking too well. They really should have left BC in.

Wasnt everyone talking about how halo ran at liek 10 fps??

The only thing that really disappoints me is how crappy PDO looked like. Even if it's very early I didn't expected it to look worse than games like Halo1.

You know, despite my feeling that a good number of Xbox 1 titles are overrated, I've been pretty gung-ho about Xbox 360. The controller, a couple of minor nitpicks aside, is exactly what I wanted. Live 360 looks awesome, with the Silver/Gold tiers being a brilliant addition. The console is petite and looks much better, with the ability to stand on its end being a real plus. Specs sound good, increased Japanese support is promising, and so on.

Then we come to last night. Oy.

Having had a chance to look at more videos since then, it's not a total disaster. Here's the catch though, the really promising stuff like Gears of War and The Darkness are 2006 releases, and my guess is that Ninety Nine Nights is also 2006-bound. Now, I've always believed that before buying a console, it should have at least two must-have games, plus a handful of titles to rent and some upcoming games you really want. Anytime I've broken this little rule, I have regretted it. With two other consoles coming out next year, it seems especially important that I be critical in enforcing this rule.

I look at this launch and see a lineup that's shaping up to be much like the original Xbox launch. You've got a Project Gotham and a DoA. There's a vehicle combat game. There is an emphasis on racers and sports games, something common to many launches. Oh, and there's a much-hyped FPS title. The only problem is that this FPS title seems utterly unimpressive in every department. Ugly graphics, choppy framerate and poor animation, mediocre character design, fuck, even the body proportions look off. Highly destructable environments were mentioned, but not in evidence. I hate to use this word because it is beyond played out on these forums, but the online play had better be really innovative for this to avoid total flop status. This is not a Halo issue where people at E3 were saying the game seemed fun but had a poor framerate. PD0 honestly looks very early and disappointing. The problems here do not seem fixable in six months, so PD0 will either be a bust, or delayed.

With PD0 out of contention barring some amazing developments, I'm not seeing those two must-have games. Project Gotham 3 might be one, though I will wait until E3 to make that judgement. I would buy Madden if I had a 360, but there's no way I'm buying a 360 just to get Madden, you know? Condemned and Kameo could be fun, and I actually think Full Auto will turn out decent. Really though, I'm not sure I'd buy those games for a console already owned, let alone pay the $300 needed to gain access to them.

So yeah. To make a long story short (too late), right now it looks like I'll be picking up a new portable or two this year, and waiting until next year for the next-gen. It would be great if E3 could change my mind, though.

Two days ago I was ready to get an X360 at launch. Now I think I will wait and see. It won't be hard for Sony to wow me with PS3 at this point.

Apart from the "My EYES!" reaction to PD0, it's hard to be excited or not excited about it so far because at the moment we don't really know what was CG, what's high-end PC, what's dev-kit or what games will end up looking and running like on the actual console. PD0 being the only one of them that was playable so far doesn't help matters.

Things can only get better at the E3 press conference.

Do we have links to videos that are not on the MTV (it's locking the non-US viewers). I'm interested to see PGR3, Gears of War and NBA2K6. I see people are impressed woth Gears, but on the other hand I hear the game was running at an attrocious framerate...

I will be one of the owner of XBOX360 this Nov/Dec.

So feel free to flame @ me.

yet you wont be playing those games for good year yet... :|

PM me and tell me what you wanna see or get on DC++

I'm psyched. I'm not going to fret about a few lackluster screens. It's new hardware and developers are going to struggle. The games will be there.... MS has already proven that.

This console has delivered on everything so far.

Built-in 20GB hard drive
Wireless controllers
standard USB ports
High definition in every game (scalable as well for us with 1080i only)
stream data from pc
connect usb devices
finally a remote with all functions (including power off)
Live Arcade from the dashboard (congrats Jesiatha)
etc., etc., etc.

really, the only remaining question is bc. and frankly, the other features make it a moot point.

The features alone make the 360 worthy of purchase.

very mixed feelings here.

the system itself is awesome, great features, love the xbox live shit... but the games my god.

The only really good game that impressed me was Gears of War and it's well over a year away. I'm not going to buy an X360 this fall in anticipation for a new, graphically godly, generic FPS. :\

I really hope MS has more to show at E3.

Maybe eventually. The launch games look pretty crappy so far, and I'm certainly not impressed. The hardware itself looks pretty nice, even if the case is a little bulky.

MS will have to get the Japanese game developers to get my support. I don't really care about PC games and FPS's. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. Definately the 99 knights game looks promising though.

The only bad press halo got was because it didn't revolutionize the FPS genre like everyone expected. But, it looked gorgeous and played very well. The fact that Bungie didn't let anyone see the single player game left most reporters skeptical about how good the game really was. But it was hands down one of the most beautiful games shown at E3 01. It was all those pretty shots and beautiful vids that were released for general consumption that got the casuals to start itching for it. After E3 it was sealed, all MS had to do was continue the hype which it did. By August after Bungie let more and more people play the single player mode that everyone as a whole started to get excited about it. The majority of gamers are sold by pretty pictures when new console is released. Halo delivered that in spades. The only game that I've seen from the 360 that looks like it could move systems is Gear of war game. But it isn't a launch title.

For the 5th time, you are wrong.

My reactions

- DOA4 time: umm ok

- PD0 time: WTF :lol

- GOW time: hell yes!

- NNN time (based on stills from the event + impressions from a guy that was there): OMG! OSOM!

- NNN 2nd time (after I got the chance to see a good video of it): WTF! It was just cgi :/

- Now: Puzzled and questioning the "truth" behind all the "good stuff" we have seen. Now that I think of it, the only game we have actually seen being played on the actual system was PD0 :/

This is an inaccurate depiction. Halo was blasted by the vast majority of the gaming press and by most of the haters on this forum. It many cases, it deserved the criticism it received because the E3 4-player splitscreen build they were showing was a choppy mess. They didn't even show single player until right before launch. Halo hype reached huge levels only after the near-final (or final) build was playtested by the media and review copies were reviewed. PDO will pleasantly surprise many people by the time it's released.

My First reaction:

W o W (not Warcraft)

Either way, I'm pretty amazed at the design, the capabilities and the prospect that the 360 is going to be giving the PS3 a run for it's money. The whole "built" in Wireless A/B/G is brillant and I commend MS for doing that. The wireless controllers, cool, I was hoping for wireless headsets, (maybe that'll come later) and also some more games that are using the potential of the machine.

The scary thing at this point is the fact that the X360 is an infant, there is probably less than 10% of the machine being used at this point because developers haven't made all the tools to exploit the machine's raw power.

Now how Sony is going to counter this and be the "Microsoft" at E3 and say "Wait" I really have no clue. What will launch MS into the lead is the previews of Halo 3 actually running on the X360 hardware. Light years past what Halo 2 looks like.

I'm talking : fog, dirt, different soliders getting mud, dirt, blood over time, voice commands for your squadmates, better physics, pinpoint deaths, pinpoint destructable vehicles, destructable enviroments in the ENTIRE game... you can blow ANYTHING up and change the way you play the game etc

That is what Halo 3 needs to be about.

Either way, I'm buying one.

My first reatction was sheer disappointment. I'm not certain what I was expecting, but what I saw certainly didn't meet it. I wasn't blown away by the graphics(except maybe Gears of War), but graphics aside, none really made me feel like "that seems like it'll be so much fun to play". None of what I saw seemed exciting or fresh. It was more of the same of what we've been playing, and not even w/ much of a graphical upgrade. Maybe I'm just not an X-Box type of gamer. I'll be keeping an eye on what comes from Japan's developers and what else is shown at E3 before passing judgement.

My interest in PS3 just went up a notch, w/ Rev still at #1.
