I'm working out all the time, so my workouts are fine. Still need to introduce more variety into my diet. I can't cook for shit, so I end up eating the same things (all healthy stuff though). Tomorrow, I'm gonna give baking chicken a shot. Any super duper easy recipes you guys can throw out?

Yeah, take legs/thighs season then with poultry seasoning and garlic salt and bake them at 375 for 45 minutes to an hour.

If you have boneless chicken breast, bake it the same way with some poultry seasoning. Then when it's done melt some mozzarella cheese on top and put it on some fresh spinach. Cut it up and dip it in Dijon mustard. It's super good.

Age: 18
Height: 6 foot and some change
Weight: 132

Goal: 1 to 2 inches of upper body/arm muscle and more defined abs.

Current Training Schedule: a couple pull ups and sit ups here and there. I do stocking at work which involves carrying heavy things up stairs. I always carry as much as I can and run with whatever I am carrying up the stairs.

Current Training Equipment Available:http://store.leisurefitness.com/Assets/ProductImages/LifeFitness_G2.jpg
Over door pull up bar.
medicine ball
yoga ball
10 and 15 pound soft weight rods.
bench bar (only a couple of weights for them and no bench)
resistance bands
ShakeWeight for men

Comments: My biggest problem is that I can not gain any weight for the life of me. I have been more or less doing nothing since last winter when I was playing hockey still and I eat like a fucker. I can't even try to get fat.... I played travel hockey and soccer since I was young so I have always been an athlete but I never tried to better myself outside of practice/games. Came to be a huge detriment to my game when other kids had started working out and I was too lazy to follow suit. Going through a huge "bettering myself" phase and want the body I always dreamed of.

I have time most days in the morning to workout an I know I have the willpower to stay with a hard routine but the hardest part is getting started. I don't feel like wasting time doing stuff improperly or not useful. I thought about P90x but I do not have the barbells for it yet. That has seemed like the easiest to start routine though. I am capable of doing the gallon of milk a day thing, but didn't want to start it without a good routine.

oops I should fix that wording. When I am carrying any more than one case of pop I do not run up the stairs.. These things I am carrying are not very heavy. Think like a carrier that holds 6 2-liters of pop. When I am carrying something like that I will run up the stairs 2 steps at a time. Should I still not be doing it?

That last piece of bolded text is right on the money. I'm happy that you are willing to drink a gallon of milk a day to add some weight to your frame and even happier than you took heed that doing so without a training regimen as intense as Starting Strength would only lead to fat gain.

So you are willing to eat. But are you stuck with the equipment you currently have or is the gym an option?

RE: Carrying shit up stairs, just carry shit up stairs to be on the safe side. It can be a brisk pace, but making an error at such a juncture doesn't sound safe. It might be unlikely, but I wouldn't want to fall on stairs without a free hand to brace my fall.

RE: Your goal of more upper body mass and better defined abdominals - your abs aren't defined at your height and weight because you don't really have any at this point. The quickest, most efficient way to a bigger upper body and inches on your arms would be one of the beginner's barbell programs coupled with an increase in daily calories. You can force adaptation with an emphasis on strength that will also put muscle on you with great success at your size. Your abdominals will get more work when you are lifting heavier weights and bracing your midsection is no longer optional while you lift barbells.

If you absolutely can't get to a gym or get to an Olympic barbell set, Fitness-gaf will have to devise a way to add upper body strength with that pull-up bar and little else. I wouldn't touch anything else you listed in your equipment list, save for the bench bar. If you can tell us how much weight is on that bar that would be swell. Weigh the bar if you can - I'm betting it's a standard 15lbs, but I don't know.

So, if you like pendlay rows, you should try Kroc rows, IMO.

I discovered today, it wasn't deadlifts that nailed my back so much last week. It was Kroc rows.

I damn near was close to chooking 3 sets in. Shit took it out of me and you feel it thoughout your whole back.

I'll try to weigh it sometime this weekend. I don't know where the weights went though...

Gym is an option but not one that I want to do right away. I didn't want to start at the gym as a stick, that would discourage me. If I can add some weight on first, then I would feel comfortable for the gym. I am currently looking on craigslist for a barbell set and some cheap dumb bells to work with in the meantime.

What are your thoughts on doing p90x? I though it looked enticing since there is also a focus on flexibility and cardio. If I can get into a good shape I would like to pick up hockey again for school.

I've heard about the case of getting in better shape before you join a gym. My advice is that's fine. However, keep in mind that there's the possibility that your current regime may not yield the desired results. Therefore, you may end up delaying your progress.

By comparison, I was a fat bastard when I finally kicked my ass into the gym.

There really is no better solution than going to the gym. The important thing is to not make excuses for yourself; your form may not be perfect, you may look a little shrimpy, it might not be 100% convenient, etc. But if you make an active effort to push yourself and go, all of that stuff eventually disappears with experience and continued investment of effort and research. You're starting on a marathon, and no one hits their stride the first few steps out the starting line.

Don't look for stuff you can buy to "help you along", that's just your brain trying to convince you to let some purchased product to do the work for you; you won't know where your limits are and how you can push yourself with some feather weight dumbbells, and it's just a recipe for setting up further mental traps for yourself in the future. You want to do P90x? Fine, go do it. But the time and effort that you have to invest if you actually want some results out of it won't be any less tedious and intimidating than going to a gym.

You have your two or three options, you have advice from this thread, take your deep breaths and get going.

Yeah dood, for real. Just go to the gym. No one cares about what you can do or how much you lift. As long as you keep on improving, that is what really matters.

If youre interested in muscle building and are only avoiding the gym out of fear of inadequacy then here's your workout plan:

Just. Go. To. The. Gym. The best way to get bigger is to train right while eating enough to grow muscle. The proper equipment available at a gym will let you train right. It's ok if you don't give a fuck about squats or whatever.

I know you're self-conscious and thus don't want to go, but nobody at the gym will give a fuck as long as you're polite and considerate.

Also if your goal is to get bigger p90x seems counterproductive. I've never done it but it seems like it's almost entirely cardio-based.

This just seems silly. You're exactly who should be inn the gym, getting those results. Would you rather spend a year to get some muscle, or 3 months in the gym to see results? Choice is yours I suppose.

I kinda get the wanting to be stronger before going to the gym. I suffered from it myself for a while, before i realized that 1) nobody in the gym cares about me and how i look and 2) i was just making excuses to not go to the gym. I did fumble around for a while with the machines before going for the free weight as well, i was too intimidated at first by all the big bulky dudes in that part of the gym. :lol

Now im just another skinnyfat dude looking to become one of the big and bulky dudes who doesnt give a fuck that he can only BP 120 pounds. Its more than i did last month and thats what matters.

Thinking hard on getting that Whey Protein. I'm in weight loss/muscle building mode, with the immdediate focus being on weight loss I guess. Should I pick up the protein now, or wait till most of the weight is off? I just don't really know what protein shakes are for.

Just a cheap way to supplement your protein intake, and get some fast acting protein after a workout.

Whey has been really expensive lately though, so if you're looking I'd jump on it. It's not like it won't stay good for awhile.

This may be a dumb question, but what is the quality on that protein? I would rather pay a few extra bucks for better stuff. Admittedly, I am ignorant when it comes to that and don't know if it makes that much of a difference.

Decision is made then. Would be nicer if my friends who have been trying to get me to go with them to the gym were not away at college. But like the general consensus here, I need to grow a pair and do work by myself.

I never got intimidated by the big guys at the gym. Most of them look ridiculous anyways. If a person makes fun of another person at the gym for being fat or skinny, then he/she is a complete and utter idiot.

Finally bought a tape measure and some scales.

I've lost around 0.5 inches on my waist and gained around 1kg (edit: actually I'm not sure how accurate this is since I was wearing different clothes - although both were light). Feels good.

Eating healthy is amazing.

I see a lot of skinny/fat people in the gym and for the most part the bro's don't make fun of them. You get the odd group of brah's who laugh while doing preacher curls but not too many are like that luckily.

I'll echo the suggestion that you dig deep and have the will to overcome social anxieties and get a gym membership if you can. My Life After Fat™ has gone through three distinct phases:

1) Improving my diet and starting to run for the first time in a decade.

2) Buying a standard barbell set with two 50lbs weights so I could DEADLIFT.

3) Buying a gym membership.

Phase three has seen my best body recomposition results and my best strength gains. People love to help the newbie and are always happy to answer any questions and no one ever gave me grief when I could only bench who-knows-how-little back then and had never done a proper back squat. I was lucky to receive a good chunk of old-school knowledge from an Olympic weightlifter that was still squatting 500lbs when he was in his early 50's ten years before I met him. He was still always trying to improve himself every day, even in his early 60's. Of all the people I met he was a great role model and an example of long-term strength progression and general health.

If you insist on staying home for a bit at first, your progress will be slower but it isn't impossible. It's just something we'll have to work with. From my experience and the knowledge I've gleaned, the least you can add to your equipment list is a good barbell set. That way you could deadlift and press, the bare minimum any Joe or Jane in the street should be doing in my less than humble opinion. It's what I did, more or less, but with the help of people in this thread you could be much more efficient about it than I was and make some decent gains in the months before you get a gym membership.

What are your thoughts on doing p90x? I though it looked enticing since there is also a focus on flexibility and cardio. If I can get into a good shape I would like to pick up hockey again for school.
I'm not a fan of P90x. When adding size to your upper body is a goal, P90x isn't entirely aligned with that in mind. Not to say you wouldn't see improvement, but there are better ways out there and I like to separate cardiovascular exercise and resistance training where ever possible.

:lol
GAF being GAF, I'd be surprised if two-thirds of the people in this thread didn't start off like HarryHengst or myself. It's intimidating at first, and it's going to make you uncomfortable, but I've found it to be an enlightening experience. Even though I'm not going to renew my membership when it's up, it has been the best investment in myself I've made RE: fitness.
Decision is made then. Would be nicer if my friends who have been trying to get me to go with them to the gym were not away at college. But like the general consensus here, I need to grow a pair and do work by myself.
Keep us updated on where you choose to go and what program you select. Always feel welcomed to ask questions if you can't readily find the answer.

Can anyone get the label for that whey to load? It's tempting but I'd like to look at the nutrient label first.

Here's the ingredient list:

Ingredients: Protein Blend (Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Hydrolysate), Cocoa Powder (processed with alkali), Natural and Artificial
Flavors, Soy Lecithin, Sucralose, Lactoperoxidase.
Contains milk and soy ingredients.

I couldn't get the nutrient profile to load, either. It's a PDF that Google Chrome says is damaged and could not be repaired.

But really, at $24 you could sell it to a buddy for $35 if you bought it and the content wasn't up to your expectations.

Szu, did it have anything about calories, carbs, sugar and such?

Thanks for posting the ingredients list for us, though.

What are the best whey protein brands? Up until now I have not been using any supplements and have a hard time eating enough. Shit is hard, especially when you have school. However, good, cheap whey protein is tough to find in Canada. You Americans have it lucky, you guys always have great deals. Plus amazon.ca sucks donkey ass.

What's your criteria for "best?" Best tasting, lowest carbohydrates, not being laced with poison?

My only criteria is that it must be cheap and it must be whey protein. Ideally it would also be flavorless so I could add sweetener to my own liking but since most aren't, and the cheapest brands certainly aren't, I deal with artificial flavor country.

I guess my current eating schedule will be breakfast (oatmeal and banana, usually), gym->protein shake, bigish meal around 3/4/5. Grapes and carrots throughout the day.

I've been to lots of different types of gyms. Roid dens, lululemon soaked fitness clubs and everything in between. To combat idiots and faux hawks curling in the squat rack I now go to a gym in my building (Sure it's missing some stuff but I just improvise). I thought I saw everything until last night. A lady working out to MASH blasting on the tv and a kid practicing nunchuks with his overweight dad.

Sounds good to me, thanks man! I am cheap as hell too.

I was actually kinda hoping the shipping cost to Hawaii would be prohibitive, since I still have a bunch of EAS when I stocked up before Sam's discontinued it. But it is telling me $1.95 USPS. So I guess I am ordering. It's going to be stored on the kitchen floor next to the shelf full of EAS.

Since I always keep a selection of bodyweight movements in my regimen, I can quickly tell if I'm gaining too much fat for my own good.

Also, it doesn't sound like you've seen a doctor for your rib injury. If you're still hurting a month out from it, you've got my sympathy. That can't feel good.

Every time I go out of my way to discard the stubborn masculinity factor and go see a doctor when I have an injury, they're like "there's not really anything to do, here's an unnecessary prescription so that you don't feel like you've wasted your time, now we'll bill you $200, lololol you moron." And my understanding is that there's not a whole lot to do about a rib injury anyway, so yeah, I left it on its own.

Basically, I was rolling in BJJ and my retardedly strong opponent took my back, got me in a body triangle, and then decided it would be cool if he suddenly squeezed as hard as he could. Something happened in my side, rib dislocation is my guess, but apparently those tend to heal in 1-2 weeks so I don't know, may have been tissue damage from the edge of a rib too. Hasn't been pleasant ;b

Have you tried a compression wrap around your ribcage? I fell once and bruised some ribs and found using one made it better in the gym.

Free shipping over 99$, so I just order 3 5lb bags of Whey(I spend a little extra and get premium), and it ends up being about 9$ per pound.

The flavours are limited sadly, but I enjoy what they have, so I'm happy. And I drink my stuff with water, so I guess I'm not exactly picky either.

Interesting. I didn't know this website existed.

This is the one you are talking about right? http://www.canadianprotein.com/Premium-Whey-Protein-Blend.html#

How does it compare to other popular brands like Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard and what's the difference between concentrate/isolate/premium whey protein?

Also how often are you supposed to take this stuff? Twice a day, one scoop each? A
