I had high blood pressure passed on to me from an entire family on medication. Whenever I do squats I get light headed and then feel sick, even at low weights. I can do sets of 10 at 125, anything above makes me feel like my hearts going to explode or I'm going to pass out. This sucks considering I'm a pretty fit 6'3" male at 220lbs.
Just to give a comparison, the rest of my body is pretty strong. I can calf raise a couple hundred lbs and I don't feel the same effect at all.
Do agree that sets of 10 squats are a lot harder. Due to a busy university schedule until the end of May i've switched from Starting Strength to a 2-day split found on the Something Awful forums which has me do sets of 10 rep squats and the first time i finished that i felt like puking. And I had lowered the weight from 200 to 160 pound. :lol
Ok so my knee is hurting again after taking Friday and the weekend off. It is a joint pain and hurts when I put pressure on it then take it off. I have had this pain before either from soccer or hockey so I am not too worried. Should I keep squatting?
I'm a little over 5 '10 and somewhere between 190-200 pounds. Haven't weighed myself in a while. Someone from far away looking at me might think I'm just built big. I don't appear to be "fat". My face is normal, but I'm starting to get a small case of man boobs and a gut/love handles. I feel like my hip and butt area is too big for my liking too. Thighs a little also.
Some pics for reference.
Here I definitely feel like I'm fat around the torso belly region.
How do I shed all of it? I mostly just want a flatter stomach, get the pecs flat (worry about defining them later) get the butt, hips, and thighs down to size. Just look better overall. I want to feel more comfortable in my body.
Some prerequisites, I'm a freshman in college in Boston. I don't have access to a kitchen. Ideally, it'd be dining hall food for me. I do have gym access though.
So far the only thing I've been doing is trying to cut down on portions and eating less. Whenever I have the time and have nothing going on I go to the gym and run a mile on the treadmill and then go on the bike machine (because it has a fun virtual game on it)
Read the original OP and follow one of the beginner strength training programs.
Also work on your diet if you want to lose weight by upping protein intake, restricting calories, carbs and fat.

Read the OP, and just try to get into a routine at first. The Marino center gym will always be packed in the afternoon, which I why I don't work out at the school anymore.
Though for sometime I used to go around 6:30-7a.m. and I was able to use all the equipment available.
So I just got back from the gym and did my very first barbell squat sets ever (not including smith machine). I guess I'm like a man now or something. Anyway I'm still getting used to the feel of it, although I think my form is pretty good since I've done dumbbell squats on and off for the past number of years. Watched myself in the mirror and everything looks right I think, at least when I wasn't getting sloppy at which point I would stop. Hopefully I'll move up in weight soon once I get used to them. I did 3x7 at 120lbs plus whatever the barbell is (30-45lbs?), then some other exercises, and back to 3x8 of 110lbs. Then headed over to the leg press machine and maxed out the weight on it so I didn't feel like such a pussy after my 110lb squats. Squats are no joke!
Also, my arms felt awkward and hurt a bit while holding the bar. Any tips? Does it work out the arms/shoulders at all in any way? Don't tell me all that pain is for nothing.

I have a pretty good routine for most of my body, but I just can't get a good core workout down. Whenever I do core it just feels inadequate, any recommendations?
Just maxed on bench after six weeks of working out and was able to get 225 x 3, 250 x 1. I was really surprised to be able to lift that much given the last time I lifted regularly, about seven years ago in HS, my max was around 200. The only explanation was that I weighed around 185 in HS and when I started lifting recently I was a disgusting 250 lbs. Over the last six weeks I've cut 20 lbs but benching 250 was a bit overwhelming. It's been a long time since I felt like I did anything of note athletically, and now I feel motivated to push hard and see where I am six months down the road.

no, not really. basically any compound lift works your core very well. i like to do the self-fellash machines, leg lifts, leg throws, and shit i make up. but i don't do abs very often.
Got signed up earlier today and went after work (gotta love these 24 hour fitness places). Still not sure what weight I should be doing for my 5x5 sets since I'm working on strength over bulk. Tested a few things out, dialed it back a bit and went from there. Am fek weak fekker, that's what I've found out tho!

Be careful that the weight of the bar is resting on your back, not on your arms and hands. The arms and hands are just there to pin the bar to your back. Like demon mentioned, you should have your thumbs over the bar not under and wrists should be generally straight. In addition, tight grip spacing will help you maintain tension in your back to support the bar.
You were hitting it pretty hard there with 6 sets of squats and the leg press. Most people on here advocate 3 sets for 5 reps each workout. You can still get results while increasing your weight by 5 pounds a workout if you lighten the load.
mmmm so some of you might remember that I am doing SL 5x5, and that I had stalled at 50lb OHP 2 times before finally getting it on my third. Today I did 55lb and did it on my first try. fuck yea.
Also deadlifted my body weight today. Can't imagine going up to 145lbs next time, but I guess thats the point of the program
Also, I don't know what you think of this workout drink, but it seriously think it greatly helped my recovery between sets. And its a lot cheaper on Amazon right now then it used to be.

Read the OP. Found nothing that pertained to me besides some stuff on calories.
I'm not interested in building muscle (yet) My main goal is to just lose the fat I have. Can anyone offer any specific workouts/diet changes that would work?
Like I said before, the only thing I'm changing is I'm eating less. I don't have time to go to the gym a lot, but when I do I only do a mile run and some mild biking.
Ideally I'd want an ideal breakfast, lunch, dinner. Right now its
Breakfast: Granola bar or a small cup of cereal without milk.

If you are serious about learning the squat I recommend you watch some of Rippetoes instructional videos on YouTube. They are invaluable for people just learning the movement

Planks - hold them 30-60 sec in different positions several sets at a time.
Pushups - but you will have to do lots - 25-50 a set for a few sets.
Leg raises - hang off a pullup bar with a wide grip and bring your knees up to your chest - try to swing as little as possible and cross your legs so you dont isolate your hip flexors.
90 degree double leg kicks - get on a dip bar and lock your arms, keep your body vertical to the ground, and throw your legs out in front of you like youre trying to kick someone in front of you with both at the same time and try to extend to 90 degrees or past that on each kick.
If at the end of this you dont feel like you dont even have a core anymore or every muscle fiber in your midsection is not in agony the next day, even the ones you didn't know you had, let me know.

5x5 will build muscle and lose fat at the same time. You don't just "build muscle" like pro bodybuilders. It takes years of dedication and hard, hard work to get real big. Lift heavy, eat clean, your body will change in no time. You're an undergrad. You have time to go to the gym.
I appreciate the advice, but I hate drinking water (terrible, I know) and I have a hard time completing my workout. My friend let me try it and it really did help. I need a drink while gymming so this will do for now.
It's not fair to compare someone who is 5'4 and 180 to someone who is say 6'2 and 180. The taller person will never be able to achieve the numbers of the shorter individual at an equal weight for obvious reasons. Only two people at identical heights can truly be benchmarked against each other. There has to be a ratio that takes into account height, weight, and strength but I'm surely not smart enough to figure it out.
I guess, but I got a free session for being a new member so I signed up for 2 more just to complete a week. A fat % measurement and other assessments will take place according to the guy.
He did want me to have a specific goal and I said I want to be in shape meaning I don't want to get all winded up after going up the stairs 2 stories. He asked me why and I ended up saying I want to feel good about myself since I am aware I am in terrible shape and I am afraid it'll start affecting my personal life (and confidence). He wants to hear more about my motivations when we meet again.

No, you don't bloody know. You /need/ to drink water. Do you know how muscles work?
Not drinking water, people wasting money on personal trainers and someone looking to lose weight by eating sandwiches? What the fuck GAF. If you're going to half arse strength training or weight loss and compromise then you're only cheating yourself and wasting this threads time.

Yeah I snapped up all my shit in my lower back, popped out two discs.
But I'm slowly back to squatting every other week, managed 220lbs for 15 reps last week. Going to be a few more months till I get back to the 400lbs range again
I find they are able to push me much harder than I could do myself, plus keep my routine fresh all the time. Plus the form. So I work out harder, with the best moves, in the right way. Worth it to me.
