Went to a nutrition seminar (read: product promotion) at my gym just now and a couple of things mentioned:
- Don't have proteins within a couple of hours prior to workout as it may zap your energy.
- Don't pre-mix your post workout protein with water ahead of time as it will lower the protein percentage. Also, consume within 20mins after ending session.

Zap your energy? Why? Also, why consume your shake 20 minutes before ending your session? Did they offer no evidence?

Hit 400x3 on the squat yesterday! Big PR for me, feeling real good about 405 next month.

Fuck yeah.

I also started doing Greyskull LP in July and I'm very happy with it. I'd like to see more people doing it since it seems like it's not that popular at least around here even though it's mentioned every now and then. It was even written up in OT3's OP but it's not in current OP since the original text was a quote so it didn't come along when Mr. City copied the text to the new OP.

Fixed that.

It was my first day back in the gym yesterday after taking a week off due to illness. I managed to pick up right where I left off. Yes.

Edit: Nerdy, what's your reasoning for doing sets across with the deadlift?

I only do one big lift per session so I can focus just on that.

Same here. I feel nothing while running.

I hate running. First, after 30 seconds I can just feel stiffness/soreness creeping up my legs, and then my breathing becomes an issue.

I swear my feet on the treadmill just go CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP while people next to me are essentially silent on the treadmills.

Elliptical for me.

that's why it's a hard exercise! it gets easier each time

He said the body was busy processing/digesting the proteins and that require extra amount of energy (compared to carb/fat I guess).

He offered no such insights. edit: after workout you mean.

Regarding running: I'd love to do a interval session (~40mins w/warmup and cooldown) on Thursdays but I also respect the suggestion of the staying true to the beginners full body workout in the op.

hahaha That's how I used to feel. But after I started running more it became more natural. I use the elliptical to warm up sometimes. But I can't seem to work up the same kind of sweat on the elliptical.

I prefer running outside for this reason. Plus, getting out in the sun to work out has good benefits for your psyche and vitamin D. I don't really like running on a treadmill. The only cardio thing I'll do inside is exercise bike. But even that, I prefer to ride my actual bike so I can feel the wind, and it's a lot better workout on my single speed.

Nutritional Hierarchy of Importance for Fat-Loss/ Muscle Gain

In broad simple terms:

  1. Calorie intake vs expenditure controls whether you gain or lose weight.
  2. The macronutrient composition of your diet (carbs/fats/protein) controls the ratio of how much fat vs muscle is lost/gained.
  3. Nutrient timing, for the non-athlete, is a very distant third. -All the research so far backs this up.
Does anyone disagree with this hierarchy? From all the nutritional information I've gleaned over the past few years it seems like a spiffy summary to me.

AWESOME JOB!

Fuck yeah.

Great work Anton!

Congratulations are most definitely in order. You'll hit 405 no problem next month, too!

Haha, great song.

And congrats, that's impressive.

You squat more than double what I can do. =)

Thanks, guys. I was surprised at the PR--it was one of those days where I was feeling weak, even walking up the stairs to my car in the garage before I lifted, and was really worried. Didn't get as much sleep the night before as I wanted, either.

It's still super weird to have really "tired" days and then lift way better than expected. The human body is a mystery to me sometimes.

He said 20 minutes AFTER ending your session. IE; drink your protein right away, don't wait a a half hour or more to drink it.

The reason behind it is that your body needs the protein right away, it helps stop muscle breakdown. If you really want to stop muscle breakdown and see the best gains you should also be spiking your insulin with simple carbs upon ending your workout too, a lot of body builders drink Dextrose DURING workouts to keep their glycogen levels up at all times but that's obviously not for everyone (obviously not people trying to lose weight).

Honestly when it comes to nutrition, nothing is an exact science, we're discovering new things everyday, but this has some evidence behind it.

I've heard all the reasons about it. I'm using these questions to determine if Man is just buying into this guy's jargon without questioning it. The biggest piece of advice I can give in this thread is to QUESTION EVERYTHING.

1 and 2 have worked well for me. I'm still experimenting with 3.

He said the body was busy processing/digesting the proteins and that require extra amount of energy (compared to carb/fat I guess).

How much "energy" is "zapped?" If eating food is causing your body to use so much energy to digest this food that you can't even workout properly, then we would have all been dead a long time ago.

Can't argue with that. I think another thing that's equally important though is to keep an open mind, never assume you know everything because again nothing is an exact science, everyone is different, and we're learning new things about the human body everyday.

How big is a 'large' scoop for protein? It says 25g for a large scoop but I don't have any scoopers apart from a ice cream scoop, so I used it and weighed 25g from a kitchen scale and it came out at 3 ice cream scoops.

How much water (in ml) can a 'large 25g' scoop hold?

protein powders usually come with a scoop... I'd say a large scoop holds about 7oz of liquid

I had no idea. Thanks. And to think i spent all my teenage years learning to dunk in basketball (I´m 5´11-6´0 with small hands) and i never done any squatting to help with my jumping.

I can do a lot more weight on the legs than on the upper body, so i´ll try to do more squats then. I´ll ask the gym instructor to change my program a little bit.

BTW, yesterday i tried the leg press 45 degrees with 550 lb, 4 sets of 10 and i felt good about it. Have more room to go but i´m taking it slow because of the joints and knees.

Still can´t believe i´m still 150 of Allyson Felix. That girl is a beast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allyson_Felix

I know leg press is always discredited because of the differences on the machines, but still...

Heya again people!

Anyone here that has some advice on how to train for grip strength?

I'm still doing SS, but the bar (when doing deadlifts) is becoming really difficult to hold on to, so I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get more grip strength.

I'm doing SS 3xweek, 2 of those heavy squats and 1 light, and on light squat day I do my deadlifts. (also no PowerCleans).

I've yet to do any dips, but I am doing some pull ups.

11 reps @ 140 OHP.

Feels good. Feels great.

Beast.

I wish my gym had a barbell OHP station, they've only got smith machines, or normal machine press. I can do 200 x 12 on the machine press @_@ I know on a barbell I wouldn't even come CLOSE to that, feels like I'm cheating :'( DEM STABILIZER MUSCLES!

I just stuck my whole arm down the bag and found no scoop. Maybe it's there, i'll give it another go.

You guys with really heavy lifts, do you guys use spotters in your OHP/Bench press?

I forgot to mention my dinner yesterday. 10oz of salmon, 7oz of brown rice and 2 cups green beans.

I rubbed the salmon down with olive oil, garlic powder and sriracha sauce, wrapped it in tin foul and grilled it. Amazing meal.

Awesome. My OHP is seriously in the shitter. Benched 255x6 last week and couldn't get more than 160x1 on OHP later in the week, I have no clue what the deal is. My buddy is the opposite--his max bench is probably 255 (small guy) but can OHP 185 for a few reps.

I've been working out at home for about 2 years with basic equipment which basically means no bench press but in 2 weeks I'm moving to university and will be using their gym. I've never actually worked out at a gym before so what's a good program to take advantage of a real gym. I am in no way a beginner though so I would need a slightly challenging program.

Learned the hard way yesterday about not going below parallel with DB Bench Press. Had two 70lb DBs cave into my chest towards the end of my second and third set. :(

Stupid ass me.

There is a ohp rack at my gym, but there is a seat attached to it! It makes it so uncomfortable for me. So I've been doing db military presses. But I know that once I get up to 100lbs I'm gonna have to start using the bar 'cause I won't b able to get 50lb dumbbells into position. I guess I'll start using the squat rack like Alienshogun.

Im gonna keep it short and to the point. Due to some health ailments im really looking at my health and have decided to make a change. Im currently sitting at 332 and 5 '9". Ive changed my eating habits and for the last three weeks ive been taking supplements and NO2. Ive been doing lighr cardio for three weeks but lifting heavy. I started just this week of jogging while holding five lbs up hills around my home. My question to you is what would the safest way to build mass and what can i do to work those problem areas? Thanks in advance for the input.

Oh why oh why do people ruin the entire point of grilling by wrapping foods that don't need it in foil? lol

  • Jogging is awesome, but I've been told that walking/swimming/biking is recommened as the starting point for very heavy people doing cardio because if you run the pounding hurts your joints more than it would a lighter person. for that same reason, the five pounds is probably unnecessary if not harmful. Someone correct me if that's wrong.
  • For bulding mass: just keep lifting heavy while eating lightly enough to lose some weight.
  • What do you mean "probelm areas?" For weight loss, spot reduction does not exist. For strength training/bodybuilding, you'd have to be more specific

Keep up the good work. Making good habits stick is a bitch but it's worth it.

I'm terrible at cooking, how do I tell what foods do or don't need wrapped?

What did you have at home? I take it you didn't have a barbell if you didn't bench press. If that's the case why not just work on the programs in the OP until you hit a wall.

Did you mean 332? Because mass gains would not be your goal.

Regardless, stop the supplements, the no2, and holding weight. Just run. When you've run enough, run some more. When you are too tired to run, run anyway.

Chin-up bar with screws for a doorframe, maximum weight 98kg (I'm 68) for $15.

Hollow wall at one end of the doorframe.

Bad idea?

And are there any chin-up bars that don't use screws for frames where you can't "hook" a bar (since the frame doesn't "stick out" above)?

I need a chin-up bar solution for an apartment with rubish doorframes.
