The 100 Rep Challenge

PACza.jpg
Didn't I post about this about a month ago? My wife and I did a 100rep squat challenge and I had DOMS for 2 weeks.

I just started deadlifting a few weeks ago. Compared to my other lifts I'm pretty weak, but I'm also noticing a more defined and wider back. Traps are getting bigger too.

My maxes right now:

Bench: 285LB
Deadlift: 200LB
Squat: 325LB
OH Press: 120LB

You did, actually.

Al Kavadlo posted a 100 Rep Challenge as well, albeit in a different form:

http://www.alkavadlo.com/2010/07/100-rep-challenge-the-whirlwind/

He credits Rannoch Donald for coming up with the 100 rep idea. It's just a simple way of getting people to get a minimum of work into their training by the sounds of it. Or a lot of work, depending on what %/1RM those reps are.

I know right?

Can sort of see it in my right arm here. Even after my cut this year, it didn't look much more prominent than that, just a tiny faint line.

My legs are a whole different story though, but you guys know that, lol.

beastly.

Also, get me a shirt like that. THX.

I kind of have the opposite.. at the gym I feel huge because of the pump, and then at home I feel like a bitch. In the end I guess I'm just in between.

I feel small compared to the people around me but I gotcha.

I'll try this one day as well. Shit like this is fun to do once in a while to mix things up.

They absolutely put stress on an injured back. It needs to keep flat against the weight of the bar at a fairly long lever length during a Pendlay row, and while normally you'd be able to handle it (provided you can do your squats and deadlifts), if injured you'd definitely feel it.

My "lower back" has been injured for over 18 months yet I'm still doing rows without any "stress" in my lower back area, it's probably one of my strongest lifts right now at 140kg. IIRC I could only pendlay row about 220lbs for triples with my heaviest ever pulls. IMO if you feel anything besides your erectors stabilizing in your lower back then your form is shit.

starting school again full time next week and i wont be getting home for the whole day practically. I will have to eat out. What is the best and healthiest sandwiches i can get at subway? I have a subway and also whole foods near by.

Thanks. It's hard. I finally got a job with medical insurance last year so I got my first physical in years and let's just say the results weren't great. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and my doctor was throwing around words like "stroke", "diabetes", and "obese".

He recommended the South Beach Diet, and I had great results at first, but decided to actually get off the couch.

It's been four months and my blood pressure has improved and my cholesterol is better. I live in the northern US so I have enough time hopefully to finish the Couch to 5K program before the weather gets cold. A coworker who is active has been encouraging me to sign up for a real 5K in October to help keep me motivated.

I don't want to be ripped or anything. I just don't want to die of heart disease, you know? And not be winded by a flight of stairs or playing with my kids or whatever.

My doctor has a sign in his office. It says "If you don't make time for exercise now you will be forced to make time for health problems later". Kind of scary.

I just scratch/pick mine off from time to time.

Same here, it's pretty habit forming though, like nail biting but not as nasty/unhygienic.

Also, I just got back to the gym after almost a month in Korea and Japan. Didn't get to the gym much there, just a lot of walking and I've gone from 165 to 157. Finally got back to the gym and as expected all my lifts have gone down by 15 to 20 pounds. But what's even more discouraging is that the muscle endurance is gone. Like 5x5 of anything is damn near impossible to do, my muscles just give out after 2 or 3 sets. Do you guys have a rough estimate of how long it will take to get back to where I was and back to strength gaining? Will it take as long to get back to that point as it did to build up to it, which was pretty damn long FYI? And are there any tricks to speeding this process up?

Did deadlifts and Pullups yesterday...holy shit on a stick I haven't been this sore in ages. This is all very depressing.

I use a box cutter. I also buff all the rough edges out with a nail file afterwards. Feels good man

Same for me. I'll take the blade out and cut slices out of my skin.

Calluses cracking or ripping from having a heavy weight in your hand really stings...

Also sick back on Lu...

It won't take you anywhere near as long as it originally took to get those gains, muscles take longer to atrophy than we give credit. Your lifts will be back fast because of something in the bodybuilding community called muscle memory(a misnomer). People who go on layoffs for long periods of time go back to the gym and train for weeks/months and their lifts come back faster than what it took to get there to begin with. A month off might feel bad, but its not as terrible as you might think, your body probably just needs to get reacclamated to the weights.

Pain is all bullshit. Just an over-reaction of dumb nerves interpreted by your mind.

Once you call your own brain on it's bullshit, you can be set free.

--- /// ---

Just for kicks I weighed myself pre/post workout tonight. I weighed 199 before the workout, then weighed 194 after the workout (2 hours later). That was with drinking 3 16 oz bottles of water during the workout.

Amazing how much water weight you carry.

Why are you working out for 2 hours? That's a pretty extreme amount of time, I think almost anyone would tell that's overkill unless you're training for a marathon or something like that.

Trying a different protein starting tomorrow.
Have been using GNC Pro Performance :

Having no other reference point (first time using Protein, started in June/July) and I have been very pleased with the taste (chocolate).

I'm going to try a different brand now with different taste (vanilla). Horleys Ripped Factors:

65gram to 85gram protein (per 100gram powder) is a pretty significant difference.

Protein is protein, so I just prefer the cheapest thing I can get. Got a 5 pound bag at Sams Club this week for $35, so can't complain about that. Only thing to keep in mind with the new container that you got is that if you're doing 3 scoops per sitting, you're going to go through that container pretty fast. I'm guessing it's 2 pounds total.

I train twice a day, so 2 hours is normal for me. Three different kinds of cardio and weights.

Need to figure out my squat issue though. The DOMS is killing my legs for running/biking

Shogun, I am currently undecided after today about whether BBB squats or deads are worse. My legs should let me know over the weekend.

Kind of stalled on my squats today.

45 lb x 5 reps (+36 pts)
135 lb x 5 reps (+66 pts)
155 lb x 5 reps (+75 pts)
185 lb x 3 reps (+74 pts)
185 lb x 3 reps (+74 pts)
135 lb x 8 reps (+75 pts)

Not sure if I should have done a set between 135 and 185. That seemed to have tired me out. =(

Still on a cut though for 5-10 more pounds, I can't imagine it getting that much better. I did 195 last week fairly easily.

Anyone ever burst blood vessels in their hands? It swells up hard and turns your finger purple. Typically get it deadlifting but lately curls for some reason. Hurts like hell.

Done 2 weeks of RPT. My strength has increased but it's so dull. I barely feel tired when I leave the gym, too - it really feels like I'm not doing enough. It's great for cutting but I think I'm going to up my calories and go back to doing Greyskull LP. I'll switch back to RPT once I hit my goals of a 4 plate deadlift, 3 plate squat and 2 plate bench.

Yeah. Purposely bought a smaller container as I've yet to experience Vanilla protein. I was hoping to find some citron/lemon variety in my local retail stores but no luck.

I've bust some small blood vessels in my forearm when deadlfting. It's only happend a couple times, and doesn't hurt at all. The skin just turns red, looks like a rash (specifcally looks like I scraped myself ie: roadrash).

180 this morning, 1 less pound than last week.

Doing more sprints at 10.5mph now.

Hit 7 reps on chin-ups. Slow but steady progress all around.

I also didnt measure my lunch today. Just threw in what looks like 6-8oz of chicken. I'm not going to stress about it anymore.

My new routine (well, will start it on my next cycle--cycle 9--of 5/3/1), based off of Wendler's Yoke additions to 5/3/1:

Code:
[B][U]SQUAT DAY[/U][/B]
Squat	5/3/1

Superset:
BBB Squat	5x10
Face Pulls	80x5x20

Superset:
Swings	100 total reps
Decline Situps	25x3x10

[B][U]BENCH DAY[/U][/B]
Superset:
Bench Press	5/3/1
Hammer Rows	5x20

Superset:
Incline Bench	3x10
Face Pulls	3x20

Swiss Bar Front Raises	3x10

[B][U]DEADLIFT DAY[/U][/B]
Deadlift	5/3/1

Superset:
Power Shrugs	3x8
Swings 100 total reps
Cable Crunches	3x15

[B][U]PRESS DAY[/U][/B]
Superset:
Overhead Press	5/3/1
Kirk K Shrugs	5x20

Superset:
Close Grip Bench	3x10
Shoulder Complex	(Overhead Press, Dumbbell Side Laterals, and Dumbbell Rear Laterals, each done for 10 reps, back to back, is one set) 3 sets

Glenn B Shrugs	100

Only concerns right now are the volume, which looks like a lot on paper, but I've found that volume is basically the only way I grow. May tone down the BBB squats, as Wendler recommends the Simple Strength Template (SST, 3 sets of 10-12) in the program. I also might replace the power shrugs, for recovery purposes...but I love them so much.

Anton, I think you might really like pull aparts. Try to get some good bands and do those. My back seems to have gotten thicker doing those and nothing else really works like they do (from my limited experience) plus its great for shoulders health.

This is the issue I had during my cut. It's the whole "you can't serve two masters" thing. Your main focus now is cardio/speed. Squats HAVE to take a secondary priority slot. That means cutting your training max significantly or you're going to risk injury/hitting a brick wall.

Man, it's hard to hit my macros when I'm eating clean on LG. Yesterday I was supposed to get 2157, and ended up around 1200. And I know that's horrible, Thursdays are just really busy, and it's going to be hard to hit that goal and not have cookies or ice cream. Haha

Also, getting 215 grams of protein a day seems like a mountain I can't climb. Protein wise, I'm doing a couple hardboiled eggs a day, some greek yogurt, couple scoops of protein powder in milk, and I'll probably do a chicken breast tonight. That's still not even close to 215.

So I was doing something weird the other day. Doing some yard work lifting these 100lb concrete footings out of the ground. Totally brutal.
I for the past few days have had serious elbow pain. In both elbows, like deep down. I have been icing them quite a bit but anytime I pull or lift something they flare up and start to really ache.

What should I do??

Andy,

Why not canned tuna? It's cheap, easy to carry and you get 25-30g's a pop. That's what all my old bodybuilder buddies used to use.

It really is depressing. I feel like if I really want to get cut, I will take a huge hit in strength and mass. I do not want to do that.

I've found wholemeal bagels to be great for eating on LG. Each one has around 250 calories, 10g of protein and 40g carbs. They're pretty easy to eat, too. I usually just keep a bag of 5 next to me on workout days and munch on them throughout the day.

I know that's a common thing to eat for protein, but I actually hate tuna. It's a little too strong for me. Salmon is great, and pretty much any other fish. I haven't tried tuna in years, and maybe I should again, but I really hated it last time I did.

That's a good tip, thanks for that. Tonight I'll probably do some nachos with cheese, grilled chicken, salsa, onions, etc. Heck, maybe for more protein I'll throw some bacon on there. Though the protein in each slice of bacon seems pretty insignificant. I guess every bit counts.
