Sup again, Fitness GAF.
Met with my ortho last Thursday to go over my MRI results. Doc told me I have a bulging disc at L5 S1, and also degenerative. He told me I should just stick to low impact for the rest of my life (swimming, low impact aerobics). Was kind of in a daze as he was going over it. I've been really depressed since then, even though my back's felt the best it's been for over 2 years, just doing my stretches and mobility exercises from moblitywod and what not.
I'm so angry and down on myself, I hate it. I'm trying to do as much research on the net as I can, but anybody here deal with the same sort of predicament? This shit blows.
I herniated my L5-S1 disk when I was 18. I was just starting college, so it took me a few months to get home, have an MRI done and get an official diagnosis. I tried physical therapy, which is supposed to help the vast majority of cases, but it wasn't effective at all for me.
I was physically unable to make my body run or jog, or jump off the ground (really hard to explain to people, and even having gone through it, difficult for me to comprehend). I couldn't bend down in any way to tie my own shoes, and had constant pain down my left leg in any kind of seated position.
At that point, I consulted with my doctor and my dad (who is also a surgeon) and decided to have surgery. Made a complete recovery. Zero symptoms remain, and I'm currently squatting and deadlifting heavy without any issues.
Surgery is not the best option most of the time. It's expensive and risky. I was very lucky to still be young (meaning I recovered/healed well, fully and quickly), and have great medical care. However, I still like to present it as an option to others in similar situations so people don't write it off entirely.
