The thing is it's just in the area around my right shin. And it's right where the "line" is from where I always drag the weight. I purposely bang the bar into my shin too to deaden the nerve in my shin. So I was thinking I had finally succeeded (I do it on high rep days). The only reason I'm concerned is because it goes about 3 inches to each side of the shin too and I don't know if that's normal or not.

It might be a pinched nerve, but wouldn't that also cause pain? And why would it only be in that small of a spot and what would be getting pinched down there? If it's in my back/hip it should be the whole leg I would think, including my foot.

Talk to a physician.

Stop banging the weight into your shin.

Didn't you just finish a cut and then workehed out during vacation? Time for a rest.

Just might do that, I'll have to find some time. ;)

Hah, in retrospect I'm sorry if I sound blunt, but to be honest, when it comes to lifting-related pain that is beyond normal pain, it's best to be careful.

If it actually does end up being nerve-related, you might be referred to a specialty physician like a neurologist. Of course, we hope it's nothing serious! :)

You've never heard of people deadening their shins? It's pretty common in martial arts. It's one of the strongest bones in the body, but also one of the most painful to hit. So they deaden them to kick people in the face. I do it so it doesn't bother me to keep the bar in contact with my body at all times. ;) (not saying I'm "there" but it has helped with the discomfort of doing it back when I started).

Also, not sure I need a rest, I'm only lifting twice a week these days. Other than this issue I more or less feel great!

That's just it, there is absolutely no pain, and it's not "complete" numbness either, it's just less able to "feel" if that makes any sense. I can feel it if I pinch it.

I probably should run this past some Dr/Nurse types. I'll call my mother tomorrow.

Fitocracy question: If I do barbell lunges, 3 sets of 8 reps with each leg (basically, each set is 16 total reps alternating left leg, right leg, left leg, repeat), should I enter 3 sets of 8 reps or 3 sets of 16 reps? I know this isn't very important, but I like to keep it proper/consistent. By the way, this Fitocracy shit is addictive as all hell. I break 1,200 points per workout without going overboard, but I'd like to see what I can do to get above 2,000. Might need to add more deadlifts/squats :lol

Age: 22
Height: 167cm (5' 5.8")
Weight: 65kg (143 lbs)
Goal: 55kg (121 lbs) or less + acceptable condition (=no heavy breathing after climbing some stairs)
Current Training Schedule: Once a week:
  • Stretching exercises
  • 3km (1.86 miles) on the exercise bike (average speed)
  • 25 sit-ups
  • 2km (1.24 miles) on the treadmill (8 km/h / 5mph). I always intend to run 3km but at this point I'm usually too exhausted.
  • Not always: 20 push-ups. Can't do more.
Current Training Equipment Available: Exercise bike, treadmill, wall bars, weights and two weight-lifting devices whose names I don't know
Comments: I haven't done any sports for years and I smoke, and I really regret this. I've gained some weight for the first time in my life and my condition is terrible. I want to change this. Strength has no priority currently.
What do you think of my weekly routine? By far not enough I guess.. Any estimations how long it would take to lose those 10kg? I eat a lot for dinner, but only a snack in the evening and nothing for breakfast.

Ambitious, you're female, correct? I would find it hard to believe that a guy who is 5'6 would want to weigh about 120 pounds. But if you are female then it makes more sense. Anyways it looks like you're just thinking about working out and don't really plan on dieting. If that's the case then it's not the best way to go. You can lose weight by working out and sticking to your normal eating routine if you never ate that much to begin with, but it'll be a much slower route and maybe you won't be satisfied with your results.

I'm not expert, I'm pretty much still learning like most people. But my suggestion is for you to diet along with exercising. I would also suggest that you should lift weights as well, lets just say 2-3 times a week at least. It's not really for the sake of gaining muscle, but just to help tone your body and burn more calories besides cardio work outs. Your diet should probably be around 1700 calories that should consist of nutritious food like chicken breast, vegetables, fruits, and so on. Try to get a good amount of protein if possible, at least 100g(most would say the same amount as your body weight though).

Anyways, I hope that helps a little bit. Good luck with your goal. As for how long it will take, with my suggestion maybe 8-10 weeks. You can lose it quicker, but the results(basically how you look) may not be adequate to your liking and the weight may come back quickly depending if you go back to your normal routing depending on how you lost the weight. But with a slow grind, it'll be better in the long term and give you the body you may desire more.

Worst DOMS of my life: working temp for UPS.

Everything hurt. Everything. Could barely walk after a mere 4 hour shift the previous day. I was beyond out of shape. Also lost 40 frigging pounds in two weeks of working for them... Part time...

know whats really shit for your training? letting your g/f and her friend goad you into the "punch as hard as you can" game at the bar. bruised my knuckle, hurt my wrist a bit, and my right arm hurts to fulls extend. yesterday things were cut short at the gym, but at least today is squat/deads day, so only my grip might matter.

Hah ... I worked there for a year (during college). The first 2-3 weeks are pretty brutal. But once you get over that, it is easy.

Should be 8 reps, I believe.

Almost worse than that is arm wrestling. I have screwed up my elbow and wrist so many times by getting goaded into that dumb crap. NEVER AGAIN!

Swapped out iceburg lettuce with spinach today. It's not so bad. Threw in 1/4 C of unsalted peanuts into the mix and it was a pretty tasty lunch.

Swapped out iceburg lettuce with baby spinach today. It's not so bad. Threw in 1/4 C of unsalted peanuts into the mix and it was a pretty tasty lunch.

I do this all the time. Spinach salads are great, and if I have spinach I'll substitute it for lettuce on almost everything. I do like a half and half iceberg/spinach salad the est though, for the crunch/crispness that iceberg gives you.

I love spinach but the dry mouth can be irritating. Kale is pretty good too when fresh. I never liked it cooked but kale salad is great.

Question: how low is low carb? I've been cutting the last three months (and I've lost 35lbs in that timeframe), and I've done so by always keeping my carbs lower than my protein and staying well under my caloric goal (without factoring in any calories burned though exercise).

Now that I'm beginning a recomp phase, what should my macros look like? 40/40/20 (p/c/f)? Or should I keep my carbs lower?

I'm not really sure how/where to look into this, but maybe someone here would be able to help. Basically, what can or should you do for a bad knee?

I never had a problem with it (my right knee) until about a year ago while doing P90X (during the yoga I believe). Doing any kind of squatting, jumping, running, etc aggravated it to the point where I couldn't walk without limping for several hours. I kept trying but it kept hurting, so I took it easy over the winter and spring, just some little workouts, biking, and light runs for a couple miles.

Eventually it felt fine, so I decided to try working out more again. A few weeks ago I started Insanity, and on the second day, my knee pain came back once again. It's a little hard to explain how it feels, but it hurts and feels slightly numb almost as if it were misaligned with the rest of my leg. It feels fine in the morning and all day until I do any kind of exercise that uses it - even after just a couple of squats, I'm stuck limping for several hours.

I tried waiting it out last year and it did seem to subside, but it appears that didn't fix it. Now it's worse than ever and I can barely do anything with it. It's doubly annoying because my job is sitting in a cubicle all day and I really feel the need to move when I get home. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, but sadly I do not have health insurance or I would have gone to a doctor already.

Anyone do any swimming?

I've got an aquatic fitness class this semester and it sounds like it's gonna be really cool. Basically I can dog paddle (front crawl), but the instructor was saying that it's no problem and we're going to learn all the strokes and turns and stuff like that. He said that by the end of the semester I'll probably be swimming like 1800 yards a day! I'm pumped now.

Swimming in the fall and weight training/running in the spring. Gonna be lean and mean.

It boggles my mind that you think Spinach doesn't taste better.
You're crazy! it smells horrible, looks horrible, and if it does somehow get into my mouth I gag instantly.

They could bioengineer spinach to be the most super superfood and I'd still never touch it.

Although I do have to say that I'm the biggest pussy when it comes to veggies.

Yes, I do triathlons and i swim three days a week for at least an hour. Just got back from the pool during my lunch break work out. It's good stuff.

Also, figured out how I'm going to fit in my swimming, running, and biking in with my weights:

Monday: Deadlift/Swim
Tuesday: OHP/Run
Wednesday:Run/Swim/Bike
Thursday: Squat/Swim
Friday: Bench/Run
Saturday: Bike/Run/Swim
Sunday: Off

Are you eating raw or cooked spinach? Because raw is were it's at... that boiled sloppy disgusting mess that pop eye eats is DIGUSTING, but the leafy goodness of raw spinach should not be underestimated... I thought it already was the most super superfood, am I wrong?

Awesome!, so stoked for this class right now. I'll be swimming Monday and Wednesday mornings, and then I'll probably fit my normal lifting and running schedule in with minimal impact... I've never really swam before, how taxing is it going to be on my body? Do you think I will be able to keep my current schedule of working out 6-7 times per week? Or will I have to trade off a run or weightlifting session for a swim?

+1 raw spinach is nasty. I fuck with wilted spinach though.

Oh I've only had it cooked actually. I don't think I've ever even seen it served raw. I'm not sure if I'd like it regardless though, but maybe I'll give it a try. I don't like anything leafy really. It sucks from a nutritional standpoint.

And it's an amazing food, was just using a bit of hyperbole. Like if they made into a food that prevented all diseases and was magically packed with 30g of digestible protein.

But yeah, i should probably stop being a pussy and eat more veggies.

.

Maybe you are thinking about frozen/canned spinach, because the spinach you can buy in the produce section barely has any smell. No moreso than other leafy vegetable.

Now, the taste is a bit bitter, but that's because it has a lot of iron in it. Especially noticeable because I have a crazy sweet tooth.

Running question: How often should I replace my shoes? I've been running on some 60 dollar Nikes for the past 6 months now. The past few I have logged about 12-18 miles/week.

I'm preparing for a marathon, so I decided to increase and change my exercise regimes. Are there any tips that I should read to better prepare for a 26-mile marathon?

Monday/Wednesday/Friday: Running for two miles on a 10% incline. I'll slowly increase this as I become fitter.

Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday: Boxing

Sunday: Off

Just joined the GAF Fitocracy group. Starting to lift again coming off of about 4 years of inactive lifestyle. It's gonna be a journey. Luckily I have the luxury of being held accountable in a class setting. I've been crazy to go to university without taking advantage of this before.

This is what you want. Put on your sandwich or in your salad instead of lettuce. Tastes good and is good for you.

Depends on the shoes, running shoes should be rated for how many miles they are "good" for. 6 months of running constantly is probably long enough on one pair... Just check out the treads and the overall condition of the shoe, also how they feel and ask someone to check out your gate. When in doubt get a new pair.

Only one day off seems like your body may not have enough time to recuperate, but it sounds like you've been doing this a while. Everybody has their own routine or variations of a routine.
