So, new stuff added to my bodyweight exercises: Pull-ups in "L" form, with legs to the front, 6x4, feels so very good.

there's one small closed area in my gym for women but all girls are with guys upstairs where the action is, anyway... then again this is Germany, so maybe guys here are all gentlemen or who knows, girls don't seem to be harrassed or anything.

In fact, they seem to enjoy being the few among many muscled men :D

Probably just a culture thing. I think women in the U.S are more easily "harassed" than in other parts of the world.

I could be mistaken though, but from my experience abroad women were more "open" and didn't mind overt attention.

Every Mr Tough Pants food post I read translates to "What Francis should have eaten preworkout today."

Also, I'm consistently weighing in at 187(ish)lbs. So about twenty pounds of weight added since September. Not muscle. Not fat. Just weight. Still, it's made lifting easier. It's been a lot of fun letting the pendulum swing from Bruce Lee to Bolo Yeung.

Working on adding Cleans to my routine. Holy shit these are tough. That's a real man's lift, gentlemen. I'm excited about the progression I can make on these, though. Started at 135x10x3 sets today. Doing it on back day. What do you guys recommend? 5x5? 1x20? I've seen a few templates, so to speak, thrown around so I'd like some guidance here.

Mark Rippetoe recommends doing 5 sets of 3, specially if you don't have bumper plates.

If you have bumper plates and a platform, I guess a standard 3 sets of 5 could work well in a linear progression.

I get it too, just the cost of doing business.

"ish?" :p

Today marked the "end" (in my mind) of my 5/3/1 3 month challenge. Next week is recovery, then a week of testing 1RMs, then a week off to recover a little and figure out what to do next. It has been a hell of a challenge and I would definitely recommend you guys who're focusing on strength and size to give it a shot.

Why 3 months?

What is a normal monthly price for a gym? A new gym just opened up by me and I don't want to pay an outrageous price for it but I have no idea what a normal price is.

I pay 30$ a month. (CDN). There's a gym 5 minutes from me that's 45$ a month, but I opt for my gym which is 15-20 minutes away because I like the equipment and layout better.

Anyone here do Krav Maga, if so, what are your thoughts on it?

I was going to pick up boxing again in the New Year but Krav Maga seems but more interesting and beneficial.

Depends what you mean by beneficial. A boxing class/lesson is probably going to be better for your health and fitness. Krav Maga will be better for learning to poke people in the eyes during a street fight and all that jazz. I don't think anyone should learn a martial art for its "effectiveness", just do what you enjoy and what's appropriate for your fitness level/goals.

$30 is about as cheap as you'll get at any quality gym. Some, like Planet Fitness only charge $10/month but their policies and equipment are garbage.

My gym in Germany costs 17.50 euros a month ($23.15 US dls.) and I am pretty happy with it, (McFit)

everyone is welcome, deadlifters, powerlifters, grunters, crossfitters, young guys, old guys, marathoners running at 10 mhp on threadmills, old ladies lifting 4 pounds bumbbells for bodytherapy. Everyone is welcome.

I'd never set one foot in those awful PF gyms if we had them here in Germany.

Don't know if this has been discussed, but since there are many parties coming up, how do you deal with alcohol and training? I try to time it so I don't train the same day as I will be drinking or the next day, but I'm not sure what is worst/best. Not training at all, light training same day or next day?

Edit: At above, in regards to alcohol, I only drink heavily on Saturday night, since I never train on Sundays. Although with New Years Eve coming up on a Tuesday, I'll probably be drunk on a Tuesday.

I pay $20 a month for any Golds.

lol never mind then. Probably depends on when you became a member and what specials they were running at the time. I know at 24 Hour we have people who've been members since early 2000s and they only pay like 8/year. There were some insane packages at the time.

I'm sure there are regional differences too. Plus corporate discounts and single gym versus many.

Eh, my gym is great and only $10 a month with a $250 startup fee. I have no issues paying such a fee as I know I'll be around for a long time. Well worth it.

5 locations in the area, clean, well stocked and staffed.

Great all around.

I understand that not drinking is an option, but frankly I love getting drunk... I have been reading around a bit and sometimes alcohol is described as something devilish you should not touch, but I find it difficult to figure out what exact loss alcohol is causing. From my experience my gains are slower in periods where I have been partying, but nothing great enough that I would cut out drinking completely. I guess I would notice it more if I was more dedicated though.

Moderate alcohol consumption has both positive and negative effects in studies, but when you say "I love getting drunk", it's clear you aren't engaging in moderate alcohol consumption.

If you don't care about the negatives or the slower progress, have at it. So long as you aren't hurting anyone, obviously. :)

I'll see what I will do, it's good to not feel like shit the next day too. The worst training experience I had with alcohol though, was when I trained 3-4 hours after having had just one glass of wine with my dinner. I felt so sick lifting, burping and getting the taste of wine in my mouth. Had to quit halfway through, never again.

Choose one or the other. Missing one day of training isn't a big deal.

These fuckin holidays.

I had a whole pizza on Friday night.

A whole pizza Saturday morning. Hot dog and pretzel in the afternoon. Ground beef at night. And an entire cookie cake for dessert.

Sunday afternoon I had a whole bag of doritos with homemade salsa and then went to a pizza buffet for dinner.

I started off this morning with 1800 calories of goodness from Kolache Factory. I think Imma go grab a burger for lunch.

Bullshit, you can definitely train the day after you drink.

http://startingstrength.com/index.php/site/article/hangover_starr

What I'd recommend doing is (if you really have to drink), to drink as little as you can. IF you're going to go out and get drunk, then try to get just a little drunk, eat some food and drink some water with a vitamin before you sleep, and don't go to bed at 4am.

I've been in the gym after a day of hard drinking where I thought I was going to die, and I've been there after some drinks and been fine. Just try to keep it under control; I can tell you as someone who used to party a lot that it is NOT WORTH IT to get hammered. It's expensive, the amount of fun you have usually goes down once you go past moderately-drunk, the hangovers are no fun and you are doing some real, permanent damage to your body and brain.

Ugh, the one like within walking distance I called today and they want $50+ tax a month or like $500 for the year... I guess I'm not going to a gym then. Everything seems so overpriced by me. :/

Do they at least have the amenities to back it up? Some of them are pretty swanky.

Bullshit yourself, shit ain't so serious that you HAVE to work out if you have a hangover. Missing one day of training isn't a big deal. He can enjoy himself and get drunk, that's fine, just train the day after when he's 100%.

Not really, it's not very big either. I would do like $30 or so a month. I guess it's better than the last place that was there and went out of business, it was like $250 for 3 months or something I think and they wouldn't let you pay month to month.
