This place is THE best. Much appreciated everyone. Thank you. Work blows today but soon all will be made right. :)

FitGaf!! I switched to an intermittent fasting high carb training/low carb rest diet and my lifts are amazing! I have so much more energy during/after my workouts now. I also benched 95lbs 3x5 today which is a PR. 135lbs is in sight!

Nice one!

sort of off topic...

but +105 kg weightlifting (clean and jerk) is happening right now in case anyone cares.

I really love this. even though I don't or ever have done a clean and jerk.

Yeah, they're fucking beasts.

Did you see the WR at the end? Holy fuck at pressing over 550 lbs above your head, AFTER pulling it off the ground and up to your neck.

Okay I've been sticking to the diet for about 5 weeks now. I feel now is the time to start going back to the gym! Wish me luck gaf, I'm gonna become a new man.

I wanted to know your guys' opinions on breathing during bench press? I've seen multiple places say you should exhale when pushing out the barbell during the eccentric motion, but other places like Mark Rippetoe stating it is best to use the Valsalva maneuver and just hold your breath throughout the whole thing to retain tension.

I've found I'm able to drive more when I exhale, but I'm not sure if I'm just imagining things and whether using the Valsalva maneuver is actually more beneficial.

Congrats on the lift, what made you change so suddenly though?

I've been doing keto/low carb on and off for about 4 years and I was just tired of it haha. So I found leangains which allows me to have a training day of high carb/low fat, then a rest day of high fat/low carb. So I can eat different types of food each day, which should make it easier to stick to. The real interesting thing will be to see how I stick to the intermittent fasting part.

I don't bench press much, but when I do I do it like a squat. Inhale, brace my abs and push. Exhale at the top when the lift is done.

Only if it's heavy...if I'm doing multiple reps I exhale on the way up.

Morning guys. Got back from a 3 week holiday in the US a couple of weeks back and put on a fair few kilos, it's enough that's its kick started me on a bit of health buzz.

Generally before I lifted 3-4 times a week, my diet was fairly shit, just ate whatever was available whenever I felt hungry.

My current plan is to come up with a diet that I can scale depending on whether I want to lose weight, maintain or add a bit of weight. I'm thinking along the lines of a rough 40/30/30 (carbs/protein/fat) nutrition split. The plan is to eat just below maintenance calories and do more cardio when I want to lose wait, then increase calorie intake and cut back on the cardio when I want to put on some weight.

What is the general idea on nutrition ratios around here? Are they seen as a load of fluff or a good set of rules? Should I change the ratio to something like 40/40/20? Being told by my sister (whose a fan of high & fat protein, low carb diets) to cut carbs out as much as I can.

Thanks!

Today is the day. I used to work out 5 times a week and had gotten myself into pretty good shape. Then I injured my knee at work and had to stop working out for a while to recover. In that time I started binge drinking beer and eating fast food every day. I now weigh 185 pounds, which I know isn't a lot by most people's standards but at 6' tall and a lanky build I have a lot of belly fat and huge love handles. For me, I look my best at about 165 pounds and that's my goal for now. Getting back on my PHUL (Power Hypertrophy Upper Lower) 4-day split that worked wonders for me before. Wish me luck guys.

I think the most difficult part of this is getting my diet right. I've always loved the gym but eating right is difficult for me. I get so bored of eating chicken breasts and rice day in, day out. I'm not a seafood fan so that's not really an option. I'm going to have to get creative and find ways to hit my macros every day.

I can hold my breath for five reps usually. If I have to breathe, I do a small exhale/inhale at lockout.

Test is done!!

I ate a shit ton of sushi and drank a bunch of dog fish 90 min to celebrate!!

Now it's time to relax, pack and head to New Orleans tomorrow for the weekend and eat and drink more. Probably doing a vanity workout today and then when I get back it's full on serious training again.

I won't know if I passed until around September 20th or so. But I did my best and I lean more towards that I passed, but there were definitely some tricky questions!

Happy to have that over with and fingers crossed I won't be testing again in November.

Done carefully though, you can hit your macros and calorie targets even using fast food. I've done it at KFC and McDonalds before now... though yeah, certainly not Five Guys. lol

Nice, the leangains system is pretty awesome. I use it myself. Don't think the fasting part matters all that much though, it's just easy mode for diets lol.

I think it's because some of the most hardcore. mofos in FitGaf use IF, like Brolic, Cooter and Psycho.

I'd actually be surprised if there were a lot of people in this thread that DON'T do IF, to be honest. But maybe I'm not here enough to really notice.

I don't.

I am in a weird phase of caring but not caring about my diet. Somedays I eat not so terrible for your body food (and control my energy drink consumption) and then days like today where I had 3 bags of chips, 4 energy drinks, Reeses, Sour Airheads, and Taco Johns.

A friend of mine has for the last year been on a strict diet from her trainer. It currently looks like so:

250g protein
104g carbs
88g fat

Around 2200 calories total

Now my problem is, she's a 23 year old girl who weighs 60kg.

Those numbers seem way out of proportion to me and to every study I can find, but whenever I suggest to her that it's too much protein she talks about how her trainer really recommends it.

Any help?

Way to much protein and probably too many calories if she's looking to cut weight.

Yeah, there's a nice mix of us.

For example, MTP does the opposite of IF. I think it's called FI. Forever Intake. The guy just never stops eating.

I've been plugging my height, weight, and age (6', 165, 27) into various "calories burned per day" calculators, and they're all saying I'm spending ~2500 without doing anything. That seems high, no? Even on rest days I'm biking ~5 miles to and from work, which makes me think I don't eat enough...

So I forgot to report the birthday feast results. Me and my two oldests kids killed 2.5 large pizzas while the other 7 people finished the other 1.5. lol We estimated I had about 15 slices. The server was legit impressed. He thought I misspoke when I ordered four. Nope. Bring it! Gone.
