Fitness |OT9|...You looked better before

I park it in the squat rack. It takes me forever to get through 5x5, and then I stay there for either OHP or BBR, depending on the day. I can move off if necessary for BBR. Fortunately, the lone squat rack in the gym is rarely in use. I do at least look around and try to make it obvious that I can move off once my squats are done, though.

Speaking of SQUATS

Man, my glutes have been feeling it the past few sessions. Good and not good. Couldn't do deadlifts tonight (it's like someone is shooting a thousand needles into my back side), and had to bail on legs entirely last Saturday to get more recovery (just worked on upper body) and might do the same this Saturday. I'm continuing to make gains on squats, but I'm not sure my glutes are particularly happy about being along for the ride.

So, I'm in my train heading to work and I see this picture.

It's promoting school lunches. That's nice, but screw that noise.

Look at the red apple. It clearly has a great core if it can OHP six plates.

Now, look at the green one. I can't tell if it's performing curls or DB press. The lack of elbows doesn't help the case.

The green one is obviously a sour grape or apple that's jelly of the gains on the red one.

Remember kids, compound barbell routines are always the better way to go for overall fitness.

Yeah but look at how tiny both of their arms are. They need direct arm work.

We have 3 power racks and another another in a different area in the gym more dedicated to just deadlifts (always full though). I usually just went through my whole 5x5 routine in the rack itself when I started out, easier. Plus its so packed that even if I wanted to say deadlift or row outside of the rack, there's barely any room. Even more, they're no other barbell to replace the one you took up so... might as well stay.

No one mentioned that the apples clearly don't do legs. Need to squat more.

Good news, I'll be able to do Olympic weightlifting again very soon. PT for the shoulder has been going well for the last 6-7 weeks. Back to building up my poverty squat.

I squat with my daughter who is 5'1 and we are constantly pulling weights off and on and lowering and raising the bar. It's not that bad.
I don't mind the inconvenience with people I know. Not really trying to do the whole dance with a stranger. Thankfully the people at my gym barely squat at the hours I go.

Bra, we beefing. That's three plates. Can't get down with counting the entire number of plates.

Hit a PR today on my Squat @ 3x5 of 205lbs!

Pretty stoked, was stalled at 195 a few weeks ago so I reset and worked on my form.

I'm on a calorie deficit as well, but I'm still seeing newbie gains. I think microweights have helped as I can still progress the load. I'm sure proper form has a lot to do with it too. This is my third real analytical iteration of my form over the last year and it feels great! At this rate I should hit 220 in early October.

A lot more work to do to catch up to some of you ;)

Oh and I finally got some chalk, oh my god the difference for cleans and deadlifts is glorious.

I'm sorry to hear that man. Hang in there. Hopefully time will dull the pain a bit.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope your move to DC is attached to a huge raise, though it's a great place to live when you can afford it.

Great to hear from you, brolic. Sorry you're going through a rough patch bud.

Since I cant taste anything anymore I just replaced my milk with cartons of egg whites.

Hey, big guy, welcome back. I wish you the best as you go through these tough moments in your life.

Damn, sorry to hear about everything big guy. Keep trucking. Nice to see you are still giving it your all.

Hoping everything starts to get better soon for yah!

Glad to see you back :).

Thanks guys, and yeah the move to DC would include a very significant raise. We will see though.

So it seems I've been deadlifting wrong for over a year. Pretty sure I haven't looked the lift out completely by using my glutes, instead giving you me a bit of excess arch at the top. I've been told to squeeze my glutes, but didn't know how to do that. A while ago someone told me to imagine tucking my tail in between my legs and I've finally managed to find my glutes. I've also had an excess arch when just standing, but thought that was just the shape of my back. Turns out I've never known how to engage my glutes, which has affected my posture all through my life.

Next time I deadlift, I'll be sure to engage my recently discovered glutes

Speaking of, is it normal to have lower back pain the next day after doing deadlifts?

I experience soreness but never pain. You have to be a bit more descriptive. Is it sharp pain? Do you feel you pulled something during the workout?

I am super paranoid about my form and deadlifts and always use a belt because my profession NEEDS a good back.

Been a while, lots of moving parts in my life right now. Training has taken a hit but it's finally moving in the right direction again. This isn't by best deadlift by far, but it's my best hook grip deadlift.

Welcome back, really enjoy the videos you post!

I'm only doing like 100 lbs ( ._.)

Though on the other hand I'm doing 3x10.

After practicing with just the bar for a few days I think I was doing 3x10 @ 95 lbs when I first started. The higher reps helped me get my initial form down. I started seeing my best progress when I got on a routine and added weight at 3x6 and 3x5 though.

*edit* Just looked at my notes, I started completely untrained September of last year. Had a few months on and off in between, because life, but I've been steady since June. Prior to June I ended my 3x5 Squat at 165 (form review), brought it up to 195 (reset and a hard look at my form again), and now I'm at 205 and really feeling good...

A lot of that is thanks to y'all here at FitGAF! Semi-lurked this thread, so, thanks everyone! Inspiration and knowledge here has been great. Don't know if I'd have kept with it otherwise.

Where does fitnessGAF go to eat when they dont feel like cooking and need something quick?

My gf had gastric sleeve last year, and every time she eats fried fast food, she gets sick. She is also allergic to all seafood and all types of nuts.

Were looking for healthy "fast food" alternatives when were in a pinch.

Help!

Hm, Muscle Maker, Salad Works, Chipotle (if you know how to order)

Chipotle is the only fast food I consume. That's not saying much though. I've only had fast food maybe twice this year. Usually just cook my own food. Fast food not really that convenient for me anyways.

Guys what are some things I can make in bulk for lunch and bring into work during the week? Anyone have any particular favorites? Easy would be preferable.

The deli in a grocery store can be quick and decent. A lot of the stores around here have entree deals where you pick a protein and two sides... so like chicken/salmon/turkey and two of the salad type items for $6-8.

Whole foods has a take away section that costs per lb, that's pretty good too.

Veggies cost so much on the go... like I can't find an equivalent of a $1 or value menu type item in the form of vegetables. Grocery stores have tiny $3 packs and bigger $5 packs of raw/cut vegetables, but they always feels like a ripoff.

I'm on a cut so I aim for lower calorie stuff, keeping that in mind:

- Chipotle
- Chicken Caesar Salad from Costco food court. You can also get a rotisserie chicken from the actual store for $5.
- Chick-Fil-A. I get the grilled chicken nuggets and make a salad at home using them.

Ethnic food is great for this. Chipotle works here.

But Mexican, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. work very well. You do low carb, low fat, etc.

First I'll answer your question and then wax poetic about the virtues of cooking over fast food.

I'd go to the grocery store and get some Greek yogurt and Deli Turkey or chicken.

When I don't feel like cooking now (coming from someone who used to eat fast food three times a day), I reach back for some determination and remember the vision I have for my body.

Fast food in general has way too many calories, and way too little protein to fit well in a diet while losing weight. The lack of protein impacts your ability to lift as much weight as you'd like.

Delicious foods like fish and steak can be cooked easily in 10 minutes or less. My recommendation would be to keep a lot of steak on hand. It will be done faster than you could run to a fast food place or order in if you plan for that.

All that said, you are talking about eating socially with your girlfriend. There's nothing wrong with having a treat. Chipotle Chicken over salad would be my first choice in that situation.

So some of you may know I've been training my girlfriend this summer. Recently we started doing deadlifts. She seemed really good at them and managed 135x3 her first time doing them.

Fast forward to her THIRD DAY doing deadlifts--that is, today. She comfortably did 150x5. I put on some more weight for my set. She walks over to it, asks me, "How much is that?" I say it's 195.

She gets down, grabs the bar, and EASILY lifts it for 4 reps. I don't know if I've ever looked so dumbfounded in my life.

Keep in mind, this is AFTER 1.5 hours of indoor rock climbing (dual gym). Perfect form, too.

What the fuck man. What a beast. I don't know how accurate those "strength standard" tests are, but at her weight that's nearly in "advanced" category. Doesn't make any goddamn sense.

I do front squats, back squats and leg press. Yet my quads are still not growing ugh. I'll give it 4 more months before I start ranting and raving.

Failed for the first time in Stronglifts :(

32.5kg OHP. Got about 3.5 sets done and just couldn't lift the bar again. Finding these really difficult.

That sucks dude. Lower body I don't tend to have a problem with, upperbody is a constant battle with trying to balance the amount volume I need to progress with out having to thrash myself

OHP is known to be hardest to gain on, don't worry about it too much, keep trying
Overhead Press is the hardest lift to gain on by far like Joe said. If you keep having problems add some Dumbbell OHP in to your routine somewhere if you have the time.
