Flashback: CNBC report on Sega and the Dreamcast (2000)

I like how they butcher almost every game title, and act like "Dreamcast" is the name of the company and not the console.

Yeah, wasn't there talk of Sega changing their name to Dreamcast at one point? I do remember that they were supposed to be called Sega.com for a while there, too.

I have a hard time believing that Sega would abandon and extremely recognizable brand name.
At the time with the way Saturn made Sega a very negative name they tried to distance themselves from the Sega name, which led to the Dreamcast Logo and name having nothing to do with Sega. Sega then changed the logo to Sega @ Dreamcast but still didn't use the traditional SEGA font/logo.

"sega" was still on the console itself, just like their other consoles. I really think the whole idea of Sega trying to distance the Dreamcast from the name "Sega" was just people jumping to conclusions... unless you have quotes from sega people saying as much.

I remember reading it also in a magazine a few years back. The Sega logo was always heavily supported on their consoles and even in the console names. It was always Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive, Sega Saturn and then not Sega Dreamcast, but just Dreamcast. My guess has always been that they weren't ashamed of the Sega name or anything, but just really liked the name Dreamcast and that they were going to stick with it and turn it into a brandname like Sony has done with Playstation. They don't say Sony Playstation in the commercials, they say Playstation. Microsoft has also picked up that idea. Only Nintendo still uses their company name in their console names.
