Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor - Saturday August 26th |OT| FOOK / YEAAAH

If he wasn't so good at getting sports fans riled up he should have gone into the wrestling business, dude is a fantastic heel

I used to think Skip had some legit comments going into the fights, but after Floyd knocking each one down the excuses continued to just get stupider and stupider....Now it's to the point of just "I don't like Mayweather, so anything he does is just wrong and I'll make up some bullshit that sounds kinda correct."

Skip did have a legit point back in the day when he accused Floyd of dodging fights. But yeah now it's to the point where Skip simply doesn't like him so he makes up bullshit excuses.

He does the exact same shit to Aaron Rodgers because he's still salty that the Packers didn't stick with Favre (and I'm someone who was salty they didn't stick with Favre)

Floyd's initial opponent selection when he went up to welterweight was annoying but I didn't have a problem with the way Floyd selected opponents from 2010 on(well, until the Berto fight).

Ref saved Floyd from McGreggor

What?

The only thing I can say is that the ref stopped the fight a little too soon (at least give Conor the chance to answer a 10 count). But even then, Conor was clearly getting rocked and was gassed.

Skip is the biggest fucking idiot in sports media right now. How is he still getting paid?

Because he still gets people worked.

Everybody approaches Skip the wrong way. They take his opinions seriously instead of treating him like another random Joe giving his Monday Morning Quarterback opinion

I wonder how genuine Skip is with this shit. Sounds like he knows why he's being paid to be there.

I think he absolutely knows he's paid to be a professional troll. Before he drops some ridiculous hot take you can almost always see him preemptively smirk because he knows he's about to rustle someone's jimmies hard. That's sort of why I get a kick out of him, the dude's a pro wrestling personality who slipped into the sports world. I'd be interested to see what Skip is like when the cameras are off.

Ref saved Floyd from McGreggor

He also said Hammerfists should be legal in Boxing, ref was biased against conor (even though he didn't call out hammerfists), Judges were paid/ corrupt, questioned the idea that sports should be watched without listening to biased commentating, He said Floyd was desperate, Conor was the best opponent Floyd has ever had, Floyd was saved by ref, doesn't acknowledge floyd let conor be aggressive to gas him out, floyd won but really lost to conor.

This is a long list of excuses in my opinion by one side.

lol are you kidding me? Let's unpack this

1) No, hammerfists shouldn't be legal. There are reasons why you aren't supposed to punch people in the back of the head in boxing.

2) Ref bias - He let clinches last way longer then Floyd's previous 10-15 fights. Normally clinches get broken up immediately in Floyd fights, but this ref allowed Conor to score a few points while tied up, and didn't step in when Conor was frequently grabbing Floyd's waist to spoon him and get some shots from behind. Likewise, the ref didn't dock Conor points (which he should have) for the repeated hammerfists.

3) Judges - Firstly, it was TKO so it doesn't fucking matter lol. Second, Floyd gave up the first three rounds (on purpose) and won every single one after that. That is generally what the score cards showed.

4) Commentators - They were literally calling Floyd old, rusty, saying he was acting out of character, giving Conor praise, etc. There wasn't a Floyd bias there.

5) Floyd desperate - How desperate is a guy that throws 12 punches in the first 2 rounds, smiles, laughs, never stops walking directly at the opponent, doesn't flinch, barely even tries to avoid punches, and just shows no respect for the other fighter's power/style.

6) Best opponent ever - No, not even close. Floyd had a plan, executed it, and it went exactly as expected. I have never seen Floyd attempt so few punches in the first rounds. This speaks volumes about how confident he was that he didn't even need to try early on. lol desperate...

Skip is hilarious

The next time Skip makes a salient point about anything will be the first time. He's from the school of misinformed idiots who think being loudest makes them right, which is what a lot of sports fans are so it explains his popularity.

Why? Morbid fascination? Its woud have been unnecessary, dangerous and completely against the rules of boxing. Coner was gone in the ninth I thought they were going to call it then as his legs were all over the place and his guard was gone but the bell saved him. Then just got worse for him, it would have been madness to keep the fight going especially as Mayweather wasn't fully planted in those punches he was giving.

Obviously things are different thanks to progress tech medicine and more I mean food and overall health and ability is vastly superior to the past. The collective experience gained from all time and how sport evolved.

Which is why peak is now. Feel free to compare fights and fighters today vs the 60's 70's 80's etc. It would be like saying Pele is a better footballer than Ronaldo smh.

Oh I see, I was having a serious, informed conversation about forty years of boxing and you're having a fanwank. My bad.

that small smirk of his when it comes out reminds me of littlefinger lmao.. it was a really nice one when he said some stupid shit about Lebron end of last season with Shannon retorting back, and the camera quickly moved to Skip for like a sec and he just had a shit eating smirk. Dude's the best sports troll by some distance.

These people are off their rocker. Conor stopped blocking in the ninth and I genuinely thought his corner was going to throw in the towel. These rules exist for a reason. Connor stumbling around getting his face pounded for a minute straight without guarding or throwing back a punch is the same thing as him hitting the canvas.

He was still dodging punches after Floyd landed a few bombs on him. Referee stoppages are supposed to happen when one opponent can no longer defend himself or box, Conor was tired but was still able to defend himself. Make no mistake, Conor was likely going to be facing a 10 count in a matter of moments anyway but I still think the stoppage was a touch premature. That being said I understand why the ref made the call, I just don't agree with how soon he made it.

His arms were at his sides the entire time leading up to the ref stopping it. It may have been due to exhaustion, but the refs job is to protect the fighters regardless, and a good ref will stop a fight a second too early instead of a second too late.

Conor was in a super vulnerable position. It looked like Mayweather didn't even want to throw the punch he whiffed on just before the stoppage (and may have whiffed because he say the Ref jumping in).

Refs need to protect the fighter and that was what happened here. Conor wasn't offering up any defense, and wasn't trying any offense so there's not much for the ref to do.

He could't defend himself as he couldn't lift his arms properly and stance had gone, by the way Floyd looked at the ref it was likely that Conors eyes had also gone. What Floyd was giving weren't bombs by boxing standard, maybe by MMA standard as he was square on for the most part so there is no way he could have got the power into his punches to cause real damage.

Yeah like I said I get why the ref made the call. I just saw Conor still doing a lot of head movement and interpreted that as him still trying to defend himself.

Pretty ineffective defense as he got hit in the head about 15 times that last minute.

Compubox showed that Floyd LANDED 20 power punches the the 10th... that lasted just over a minute.

Connor through 9 punches and landed 4 that round.

You don't know what you are talking about. Don't bother to reply I won't be reading yours any further.

Edit: 40 years and you argue this and in this manner smh the player pool alone of boxers are thousands if not millions more. You ignore literally everything and your posts are just an endless stream of Mayweather hatewank.

I can deff see it both ways. Personally I like to see fighters hit the canvas, but in this situation of his first pro debut vs someone this experienced would just be regret if they didn't stop it earlier if something serious was to occur. Also he's young, and this fight means little to nothing. I sometimes wish they stopped the GGG v Brook fight sooner to save his eye. Hindsight is 20/20.

He does deserve credit, participating in a sport where you get hit in the head repeatedly is a brave endeavor.

There's a difference between deserving credit for participating and deserving credit for "winning" 3* rounds, landing** "punches" on Mayweather, and "lasting" as long as he did.

Conor was responsible for Conor stepping into the ring. Everything that happened after that was all because Floyd made it so.

The only thing I can say is that the ref stopped the fight a little too soon (at least give Conor the chance to answer a 10 count). But even then, Conor was clearly getting rocked and was gassed.
The dude couldnt raise his hands AT ALL for the final 15 seconds. Not once. He was retreating hard those 15 seconds for a reason. Because he couldnt physically box anymore. His arms were dead weight. Conor was clearly a defenseless fighter at that point, yet the ref was should have let a top tier boxer tee off on a dude's head until his brain tapped out instead?? The entire round plus the final 15 seconds was enough time to see that Conor couldnt fight back anymore.

This isn't MMA where Conor could have maybe opted to grapple an opponent and take a breather. He had no hope of that anyway considering he couldnt even manage a wild flail to cover his face or a desperate grasp to tie Floyd up. Waiting until his body went limp would be unnecessary and wouldnt prove anything more.

On vacation for a wedding but I did catch this fight, and just wanted to say this went so precisely as predicted that it was almost comical. McGregor looked like Blondie in the desert in R10, got a good laugh out of folks saying the ref stopped the fight early.

That said the undercard was actually decent except for the first fight. If someone can stop Davis from being a damn fool he will be worth watching. Jack's fight was great too.

I really don't want to be in this thread but I have to laugh at the compubox and the scorecards are suddenly being shown as the definitive view of the fight. They have been laughable in boxing and all combat sports for decades no one gives a shit about them. Mayweather was the better fighter and he won but it was not completely one sided as people are making it out. Conor did much better than most people expected.

I don't think compubo and scorecards are the definitive view of the fight. It's the stoppage. Conor doing much better is fine as long as you accept that Floyd made it so, but walking directly towards him with a high guard to make it interesting. Hell, Mayweather made a six figure bet on himself that he would ko Conor by 9.5 round. If that doesn't scream "Mayweather allowed it to happen" I don't know what does.

Compubox makes the fight seem much more competitive than it actually was. People using the "he landed more than Pacquiao" shit are delusional.

Wait, what? I thought boxers weren't allowed to make any kind of conditional bets on their own fights, just ones where they put money down that they will record a win.

He kept his left hand down the entire fight but the last minute of the 10th round was McGregor doing nothing. He ate a solid left hook and wobbled into the ropes and tried to get away. In the moment before the stoppage when he back was against the ropes, he had no energy to put his hands up and Byrd saw that when Floyd kept moving forward and McGregor ran backwards. His face was completely open and vulnerable, his back was against the ropes and there was no point in letting the fight go on. Floyd would've hit him 2-3 more times, give McGregor damage and it would've been an actual KO.

Post fight interview Mayweather says that they wouldn't let him bet on the day of the fight. He had to give money to someone else to bet for the KO.

Or he could have stayed on his feet and rocked and taken even more like most fighters with good chins do. That is why TKO in boxing are important.

It's crazy how many uninformed/casual fans are parroting that all over social media, as if score is kept in boxing based on how many punches are thrown/landed.

The punch counts didn't change anything though, it just validates the faulty opinions from Saturday. Look at this thread, it was full of 4-0 and 5-0 scores for McGregor early on, then when the scorecards were released people took it as evidence of corruption.

Well, that seems like a rule easily dodged. I wonder if they let boxers just get around it like that all the time.

From what I read it seemed more like the bookeeper was saying no to protect themselves and not because of any NSAC policy.

Multiple sources told ESPN that Mayweather went into the sportsbook at the M Resort around 3:30 p.m. PT, Saturday, with cash and plans to bet on his fight against UFC star Conor McGregor.

Mayweather attempted to place a $400,000 bet on the fight ending under 9.5 rounds at -200 odds, but, according to a source, there were concerns over the legality of a fighter betting on anything other than a straight win, which caused a delay.

According to the report, Mayweather also wanted to place a bet on himself to win by knockout but grew tired of waiting and left without placing any bets. By the way, the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Nevada Gaming Control have no regulations prohibiting fighters from betting on themselves.

I watched the fight again last night, McGregor did surprisingly good. I thought the fight was much closer then in the live viewing. Still, I knew he couldn't keep up the pace, and Mayweather was either going to KO him, and just beat his fucking ass if he survived the 10th round. Mayweather executed his plan perfectly. Genius boxer.

I do think Floyd made the fight last that long to make McGregor look good and make the fight seem more plausible/fun to watch. He barely threw any punches at all in the early rounds. He easily could have won in the first 3 rounds if he wanted to.

I think it was a combination of Mayweather feeling him out and getting his timing down, and him letting Conor tire himself out. And when it became apparent that Conor's power was not something to worry about, it became an even smarter strategy.
