Feel we've dodged a big bullet there with Marveaux, good luck at Newcastle. We've just had too many injury prone players in the past on sizeable wages that don't benefit our club one bit. It seems we were trying to offer him a very safe deal based on his injury history and he wanted something more permanent with Newcastle more than willing to throw it at him. Newcastle just best hope he's not another Michael Owen, ie, a player receiving big wages but always injured. Some would argue that they got him on a free transfer but if his wages are big and there's a signing on fee, which there may be seen as Newcastle
lured him there, then he could be quite a big and unnecessary cost in the long run.

Whilst I admit I'm not the biggest watcher of other teams and subsequently not an infinite source of knowledge about players not connected with Liverpool, I remember a cold December night at Anfield where the only player to turn up for Villa was Downing. He showed quality on the ball, put in a decent delivery and wasn't afraid to have a shot. He seemed a really solid winger in an average team.
Jump forward to our second fixture against Villa, he scored a clinical volley from a cross and whipped in a few dangerous balls himself over the course of the game.
In terms of what we need, someone to hug the left wing and put in some great deliveries onto Carroll's head, as well as a general ability and quality on the ball Downing would be a great addition to our squad. In relation to what we really need he'd be a much better addition that someone like say, Young, who's much more of a flair player and subsequently gets more plaudits.
