From that first loss, through the struggle against Sweden, last minute goal against Italy... How did they do this?

Amazing. Proud of the girls. Showing the boys how to do it.... Again.

They only played well for 2 of their 6 games. It's crazy how they got through the knock outs, being 2-0 down, goals right at the end of games, penalty shootouts. All of it the hard way.

Quite frankly, it wasn't good football. From none of the teams.

It all came down to penalties of some sort in the end (something I don't like in either the women's or men's game), and none of them were good. The ones in the game against Sweden were embarrassing.

But hey, I'm glad they and their fans are happy.

Joao Felix has departed Chelsea and signed a permanent deal with Al-Nassr.

The Portugal international made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last season, netting seven goals following his summer move to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid.

He spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at AC Milan and has now departed the Blues on a permanent basis, joining Saudi Pro League side, Al-Nassr.

We thank Joao for his efforts across his two spells at the club and wish him well for the future.

What a waste

Such an odd career. He's still only 25 (although that's older than I thought) so he's still got time to turn it around. But taking the move to Saudi Arabia might be the end of his hopes of being a top-level player. I'd read he also had an offer from Benfica, which could have been a good way to get back on track, but it was for far less money than the Saudi deal. But I guess maybe the Saudi offer for that kind of money is just too much to turn down.

Pretty crazy to potentially swap out the entire front line in the space of a transfer window. Obviously creating goals was a big issue last season though so clearly they felt big changes were needed. None of them have/will come cheap either so that doesn't leave a lot of room to improve other areas and I was hoping they might be able to get another central midfielder. But maybe rotating between Bruno/Mainoo in the 8 role and Ugarte/Casemiro in the 6 can carry that through, but it doesn't feel like that's the right kind of balance.

There's also Mount, Collyer and I think Zirkzee can play deeper too. I reckon the midfield will be ok, it's the GK I'm more worried about but there's also rumours of talks with Donnarumma and Nick Pope. (Both seem to be dependent on PSG & NUFC buying new GKs).

Mount is a 10 and Zirkzee is somewhere between a 9 and a 10. If we assume Cunha and Mbeumo are going to be the first choice 10s then you need to find a role for Bruno, the best player in the team. So you drop him deeper into central midfield, something we did see more of last season. So then you need a 6 who can cover a lot of ground to pair with Bruno since he's going to be very focused on direct offence. Collyer is still young and I think that's a big ask to expect him to make that step up. Sékou Koné also seems to be a big talent for that position but is also really young. Ugarte has that aggression but maybe needs to get more comfortable on the ball, which is something he can hopefully do this season, and Casemiro can be good on the ball but seemingly no longer has the legs to cover all that ground, especially when he's paired with someone like Bruno . So that's why I think central midfield is more important than goalkeeper at the moment.

This video with The Athletic's Carl Anka has him explaining what Amorim is probably looking for from his central midfielders.

I can't see Donnarumma happening. It feels like United are just being linked as part of him looking to get a better contract. But PSG are signing Chevalier so maybe he will end up moving.

If Utd manage to get a midfielder and a keeper alongside Sesko. They'll be in a decent place.

They would still have work to do on the squad, but you would hope that they could get at least some form of European football next season.
